The mission of the San Diego Model Railroad Museum is to research, collect, preserve, and present the heritage of American railroading using educational programs, displays, toy trains, and scale models of California railroads. Spanning over 27,000 square feet of trains, trestles, and tracks we are in the heart of natural beauty framed by the majestic backdrop of Balboa Park. At every twist, turn, and tunnel we spark curiosity with developing educational programming that includes education milestones like critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving.

I was a young Sailor stationed in San Diego from 1975 to 1979. One of the greatest pleasures I had, besides serving in the US Navy and going on West-Pac Cruises, was hanging out with some of the model railroaders there in San Diego. I was very impressed with this group because they did not stereo-type me as a young, dope-smoking, longhaired Hippy, pink-O fag. I was treated as a fellow model railroader and we had a lot of great adventures chasing the last remnants of SP commuter service in San Francisco, as well as train spotting on Tehachapi, Donner Pass, and Dunsmuir. Thanks a million for keeping this young Sailor's ass out of trouble and keeping my interest in model railroading alive during my early adult years. Salute!
