I don't think there's a need to put down spotlight like that to make your point. Those scenes you pointed out, to me, worked incredibly well and did help the movie's realism and immersion. And the fact that the "dramatic" moments were sparse helped with their impact. While I get the comparison with the wire, the tv show comes of as way more dramatized than the movie. Also you analysis of woman under the influence is very surface level. The techniques used for that film are the ones that give it it's realism. The actors had way more room to play. In comparison with spotlight in which every line of dialogue feels like it serves a purpose, every scene moves the story forward. Without having big scenes, the movie keeps you engaged at all times. It's, like you mentioned, as if you are watching a newspaper article in movie form. How poetic is that? The style and the look of the movie is intentional at all times and it's kept going through the whole run time. The director doesn't resort to using gimmicks for those big emotional scenes. Idk I feel like I'm glazing spotlight now lmao

Gena Rowlands and John Cassavettes are without a doubt my favorite “Hollywood” couple. He was such a brilliant director and he knew his wife and her potential so well. of course, she’s a brilliant actress of her own accord in every single performance… But with her husband directed her? She was over the top phenomenal… She’s a real actress my favorite actress only second two Ellen Burstyn… I’ve been an actress my whole life. And it makes me sad. What passes as acting these days… If people really want to see what acting is about? REAL acting do yourself a favor and watch this movie… “A woman under the influence” or watch Ellen Burstyn in “Requiem for a dream”… Jodie Foster, in “the accused” and of course “silence of the lambs” are right up there too especially the part in silence of the lambs where is, she is explaining her traumatic childhood when she tried to save the lamb from the farm to Dr. Lecter.… Jodie Foster wasn’t supposed to cry for that scene but she did and you can how much that memory still haunts her character. That little part of vulnerability won her the Oscar. It sickens me, literally sickens me that Ellen Burstyn lost to Julia Roberts in “Erin Brockovich”… I know it’s all politics, but I’ve never seen such a real, haunting performance, lose out to such a over the top, mid level “new Hollywood“ performance by someone who is really more of a movie star that an actress. If you put Julia’s performance on its own? And just look at it for what it is, it’s not a horrible performance and it’s definitely the best that Julia Roberts has done but honestly that’s not saying much. But when you put it up against Ellen and requiem ? It’s like comparing the Sistine chapel to a paint by numbers….One is art and one is contrived. Still bothers me to this day.
