I don't know if you will see this comment Nathan, but the last episode of the show (and upon reflection every show you've made) actually sent me into a deep sadness. Asher is such a reflection of us all; a hybrid of good and bad behaviours, thoughts, feelings, intentions - the unavoidable afflictions that come with this confusion coupled with his unfair demise (whether it's losing his mind over the contradictions he lives or simply being chaotically subject to reversed gravity) feels like a hopeless ending to a common experience. I'm sure my perspective is just a projection but I've spent a good few days alone trying to process it. Your shows do this to me everytime, and as a result I keep in touch with Salomon every year for his birthday almost as a way of finding some kind of peace with myself and the feelings that your shows evoke in me. I’m not sure I totally understood it. The contents of the drawer is the true “meaning” of certain things in the show or the show itself right? It didn’t make sense to me because it seems like then the contents of the drawer will not always be the same for everybody. Did I misunderstand?
@N8R_Quizzie10 ай бұрын
@@sajking7269 well there is some amount of subjectivity, but it'll ultimately lead to the same things. It's like seeing a drawer full of different trinkets and knick knacks and asking people to describe it. There will not be 2 exact same descriptions even though they're seeing the same drawer, but also the descriptions won't be wildly different. For the curse people have agreed upon a bunch of different meanings behind the ending which all seem to make sense, it's just not overt. The meanings that make sense are the ones founded on some sort of evidence which removes any bogus subjective opinions. In summary, there is some amount of subjectivity in the fine details, but the objectivity of what's in the drawer is hard to misconstrue.

He's just hanging on to all he has...which is himself. Hanging on for as long as he can. But he really doesn't have anything. He's entirely a vessel for others. No agency, no awareness...a product of his environment more than anything. Made to feel a certain way, made to be guarded over certain things, always trying to flatten himself further on the ground subconsciously. Never found it in himself to be more and always finds the worst ways to assert himself because he's been ruthlessly bullied into oblivion by people like Dougie just looking for the thrill and taking advantage of the lack of awareness. I think the beauty of the ending is that it comes after so much that you can't really boil it down fully. Yet it all works in harmony. The experience of it all, more than anything, is what makes it special. It's funny seeing the other reply being like "I mean it's just like...this simple". I do like that theory a LOT but how does it connect to the Curse element? Perhaps it's at that point that Asher curses himself. Or maybe Dougie was the one who was cursed as he alluded to in a prior episode and everyone he gets close to dies or goes away somehow. Either way the curse of Abshir's daughter is probably just a red herring. Actually hey, I like that 😄
@austinwoods4668 ай бұрын
@@LARathboneI think you're right, the curse from the title could either be the things you mentioned or it could be that Asher cursed himself with that speech (which you also mentioned). I agree, I think thats exactly the point of the ending. It's not supposed to be funny, you're watching someone go through something traumatic and terrifying. He's literally breaking the rules of nature by floating away. At the same time, we've also watched Asher and Whitney gentrify a neighborhood which is something that happens everyday and despite how awful gentrification actually is, so many people treat it as normal. Same with the fact that the US is a country that exists on land that was stolen from people who are very much alive and still there, living their lives while people generally ignore them and accept that as normal. Which is the reaction that everyone but Asher and eventually Dougie have when its extremely clear that Asher is floating away towards his death.

Now that she has her child, she's gonna be a controlling mother who uses her son for attention and fame like how she used Asher, all just for serving her own means. Asher isn't need by her anymore so essentially cease to exist. It's also I feel a further extension of what Nathan was touching on in The Rehearsal, the idea of a neurodivergent socially awkward individual becoming a father, we see how much he struggles with human interaction so in a sense the ending can be seen as a metaphor for how he feels because of the way he is he fears he will never be able to form a genuine relationship with his son, and him floating a way is symbolic for him being an absentee or bad father. You can tell Benny used to do stand-up. He has natural comic timing.

I’d love if they worked on a spin-off of Dougies character where he is producing another show maybe before the curse events to get his backstory more

17:00 oh my god I had completely forgotten about Dougie's role in his wife's death. How heartbreaking for him.

Right? This had been lingering in the back of my head the moment I saw Dougie break down crying. (I’m the guy who asked the question at 16:30)

very important, Dougie curses Asher for saying "Ask your wife"

It’s really just the same esoteric message repackaged differently, like the end of 2001 and Stalker (which is ironic considering we are told they oppose each other and yet they actually lead to the same thing) similar tropes being played out and quantified through excellent and profound filmmaking. I’m just saying at the very core, it’s dangerous. All my love to you Benny but… *I know* ❤

Only now did I realize the tree branch could have saved him. If he crawled around and showed he couldn't fall off the branch without hands. I think the *gravity* of the situation would have come up...

I have to admit I thought I was going to be prognosticator king for a day when I predicted he murders the wife in the final. I was so sure about it too lol. No, did not expect the anti-gravity ending BUT was not disappointed either!

For me the ending was describing a rebirth. I can see that Asher is flying towards a source of light in fetal position at the same time his son is coming to life (from the darkness of the womb to the light of the hospital). I am not sure what that means yet but I think it has something to do with that. Maybe the curse is that Ash will never meet his son or maybe it's the life this baby will have in the future. Or maybe the real curse is the friends we made along the way

Nathan's character is forced to absorb into everything around him, Emma's character walks through life not giving an Inch to anyone or anything and forces everyone else to absorb into her world. This show was brilliant, good job to everyone who worked on it. Safdie's character closes himself off completely, and is an observer who manipulates ( absorbs / rejects ) those around him for the success of the show. there are 3 or 4 subtextual things happening all at once sometimes... , strong currents of messaging / dynamics / culture ( and politics ( they walked a tightrope, but im an Artist, so politics doesn't matter TOO much to me (esspecially these days...) ) ) ... never stop asking questions folks, and if this show didn't "hit" you at all... i would say to come back to it in a few years and to keep opening yourself up to new experiences. Every.single.thing. you see, read , listen to... has depth. Humans have multiple levels of "understanding" . If you believe some historians, our Ancestors ( 100k years ago), didn't even talk to each other for thousands of years ... but they understood each other using symbols, grunts, hand movements... Symbolism is everywhere and The Curse has it in spades.

There are so many questions to ask but everyone asks about the camera shots still when he answered it already 🥴 were they asked not to center questions around explaining the story too much?
@tessas11 ай бұрын
I mean Benny opens the Q&A by saying he doesn’t just want to explain the ending to everyone. He wants everyone to have time to think on it and “try to pull the drawer open”. So people asking questions were respectful of that.
@haley292611 ай бұрын
@@tessas yeah I get that, but there’s still a lot that can be asked about the themes and characters without hyper focusing on the same camera shot questions.

IMO the moment Asher told her that he was giving the house away Whitney knew she didn't want him around anymore which precipitated him floating away the next morning (I think).

Benny Safdie gave me the impression that there could be one more Lincoln Center talk down the road. So the super fans could see "what's in the drawer" and find out what REALLY happened. And I hope to announce Season 2.
@esinach11 ай бұрын
It doesnt need a season 2. Just give them money to make something else.
@Stress-Free-K11 ай бұрын
@@esinach Well no tv is needed. And if this was a limited series, of course, that would be fine. Otherwise, shouldn't we support a 2nd season, even if you fear they could never live to the heights of the first season? I think it is a question of faith over cynicism.
@esinach11 ай бұрын
@@Stress-Free-K I dont need to support a second series. I would prefer them make something new. It literally doesn't need one for the sake of it. The story ended. Maybe if they do a one off episode in a few years that could work. The show was good, and the end was great. But it was too long in general. Id cut 10-15 mins from most episodes.

So asher is def her baby, once you see it you can't unsee it, the fetal position, the fact that they have to do a c section=cut the branch, and the dula pulling him out of the house...
@ambylam11 ай бұрын
I agree with this interpretation and I think the moment Whitney sees the baby is the moment Asher dies. Like, he was still in the back of her mind but when she saw the baby everything else in her head just... disappeared.

Not sure the payoff justified the nine hour build up, but still. It was certainly different & that should be commended in itself.
@DiffidentAgressor10 ай бұрын
Yeah, that's the bitch of it. It's already a ten hour commitment THEN you still have to digest it all which involves mentally retreading that same ten hours, plucking fragments up from memory and considering how they might fit the bigger picture you've managed to cobble together based on the themes. Very demanding! I still don't know if I liked it or not but as you said, definitely refreshing.
