This is still the most breathtakingly shot film I’ve ever seen. I come back to it often. The opening sequence makes me feel the warmth, the fleeting moment of the early light, the city sights and sounds, it’s everything a film should present, it enlivens that city, I’m breathing in that salty Bay Area air. The soundtrack is amazing. Why it never won any Oscars is an absolute crime. Nothing has come close to the artistry of this film.
@blakeandcamp5 жыл бұрын
This scene gives me chills every single time I watch it. Absolutely perfect from the cinematography, to the speech, to the incredible score. It's amazing how well the song fits what's going on here. The cue when the city skyline pops up over the hill, the ominous sounds when they see the bystanders staring at them, the way it builds as Jimmie and Mont get close to the house. It's absolutely perfect. I can't get enough of it.

This is an incredible scene (and film) but a note on the music - the song used is Michael Nyman's "MGV" which was commissioned for the 1993 ballet "DGV" choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon. The piece was honoring the opening of a new high speed train line in France, hence the music's propulsive, energetic quality. It was performed as recently as February 2020 by the New York City Ballet. The film's score was composed by Emile Mosseri, which might be why no one can find this song on any soundtracks.

I didn't realise this at all (totally assumed it was Mosseri who is obviously a fantastic composer in his own right). Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge, especially the part about the purpose of its commission - you can certainly hear its intention when you know it was for a new high speed train line. Its a truly wonderful piece of music!

I moved from Detroit to San Francisco many years ago to work for a community and economic development based law firm on Market Street. The lawyers in the firm were charged with, among other things, addressing the gentrification and economic displacement in San Francisco that the film presents. Unfortunately, those issues remain and continue to dramatically alter the demographics of not only San Francisco, but Oakland and other surrounding Bay area communities.

Good eye! If I had to guess: I'd say they had a problem during shooting or a tight window and they needed the shot to be at a specific time of day, with the sun in a specific position for the lighting. They also wanted to maintain that side angle where the camera is generally showing the right side of Jim and Mont as they go from left to right across the frame. The location needed to be fitting as well. I figure they made a mistake or just couldn't align everything properly so they took footage slightly different than planned and mirrored it. Lots of moving parts there so it could be any number of things.
