Hey Chirag thank you for making this video! I was desperately looking for any information on Spotted Munias. Two spotted munias weaved their nest in our balcony around the first week of September. We let the nest be and tried to guard it as much as possible from big birds. Within days, a big bird perched on the balcony stand where these birds had weaved their nest. I shooed it away but realized that the munias weren't coming to the nest as often after this incident. Their nest was built by this time. For over 3 weeks, we didn't spot the birds in the balcony. Today, my husband decided to throw the nest away coz we noticed that the birds built their nest on the AC unit in the balcony of a flat opposite to our building - at least that is what it looked like. Anyways, my husband carefully inspected the nest and just as he was getting it out of the stand, he spotted an egg! The problem is that the nest is not how it used to be. We managed to place the egg back carefully and cover it as well. But, the nest is not the same. Any tips on what I can do? We are really disappointed that this happened and we want the egg to hatch.

Yes it happens that after some incident birds don't come back. But as per my experience after laying eggs or after building nest birds come to nest very slowly without making any noise. Are you 100% sure that birds are not coming then it's fine that you removed nest because any way that egg was not going to hatch. Now your main question is that you want that egg to hatch, one thing u can do is find one more spotted munia nest near you and put that egg in it I know its difficult but it's one of the solution. Other thing U can do is hatch egg by incubator you will find more information about it on KZbin. Now what's my opinion is that since it's been 3 weeks birds didn't came back there are very less changes that it will hatch. What you should do is wait for next year they will come back take care of them next time(more than this time).

The nest is not the same anymore and I don’t want to kill the baby bird. I was checking out incubators but should I do anything at all or leave it as is?

I know how spotted munia build nest obviously after checked it, its not in that condition so there are less chances that they go inside that nest. Just assume that u hatched that egg using incubator after that it's not easy to feed them. They are very small birds. I have one of those in my air conditioning unit outside. A big 3 ton air conditioner and I can't use it because I don't want to hurt those little birds. I won't suffocate in the next 3 weeks. I'll just be patient with those little critters.

Many years ago, a pair of doves tried to build a nest in my front porch on a concrete bar like that too. They usual don't make a good nest. They just laid the eggs on a very narrow bar like that and 2 or 3 eggs fell on the floor and cracked. I decided to put on a wood piece like that to expand the space for them, and they laid 2 eggs. Then one egg rolled off the platform and broke. During the next few weeks, the egg hatched and a little one came out. I spent the time to look at the little one grew up every day since it's on my front porch when I leave the house every time. When it grew enough and ready to leave, I decided to grab it and hold it first time. It's so beautiful and for the next day, it left the nest and was fed on the tree not too far. I watched the parent birds feeding him. Sometimes saw the little one walked in the garden with its parents. They are still around the house, but I don't know which one is which. I want to build wooden boxes on the tree for them to nesting, but thinking about the poop and mess they will make after all. I just leave them as nature.

In July 2020, a pair of Munia built a nest in our Terrace on Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia) branches. They were regularly harassed by pair of Sparrow and a Crow. But they succeeded to built a big nest hanging outside of terrace.

Cardboard is good, but you should have gone to your local pet store and purchased a nesting box made out of wood for them to build a nest in. Simply attach it firmly to their desired nesting spot and see if they like it enough to move in next time. A lot of birds will quite happily build in an artificial box, if they are not disturbed too much. With the miniature cameras now available, you could also add surveillance of the nest building and rearing of the chicks. If regulations in your area allow, you should leave the Spotted Munia some appropriate feed otherwise it is just best to let them do what mother nature intended them to do.

Munias have built a nest in my AC outdoor unit.. it was messy but worth it but they haven't come back to the nest for 2 weeks now. Is that common to abandon the nest with eggs in them? Will the eggs hatch without incubation from the birds? What will happen to the eggs if they don't come back? I don't know if there are any other nests around to drop them there. I almost removed the nest without realising there are eggs in them. I just thought they abandoned the nest. Please help. Also on an unrelated note, isn't it a fire hazard to have the nest close to the unit?

I am just guessing that they might have scared of something that's why they didn't not came back, yes it's happens that they leave nest after laying eggs. As you are saying that it's been two weeks they did not came then eggs will not hatch. Without incubator its not possible, I think now you have to wait for nest year they may come back. And last if they build the nest then that mean it's OK even its closer to AC. I hope this information helped you.

I think U should watch video again I mensioned that I have given them privacy means I did not peek in nest because I had to turn on the torch that light might affect the chicks eyes that why I was not able to shot the ckicks video. If you have watched the video till end I have shown the baby bird after coming out of nest. Yes I should have not peeked in their nest but I did it very carefully.

Watching bird is a very patience task. It requires a lot of patience and time if by mistake you create a threat, they will go away. so be very careful. I have too started noticing that a Munia couple is making nest just behind the AC unit. I need more info to gather so that I do not scare them off. I see they like peace, unlike the Sparrow, they get very scared. And are very shy of human.
