My Granduncle was the first office deployed to survey a then-dwindling Kaziranga. He was part of the British-Indian Imperial Forest Service back then. Through his efforts, my Granduncle preserved the Kaziranga and soon found the first live rhino in the sanctuary, which he subsequently sent to the US. That led to Kaziranga's interest booming. He passed in 1939 due to black water fever that he contracted from the marshes and swamps of Kaziranga. His close friend Lt. EP Gee called him, "the man that put Kaziranga on the world map." Many places in Kaziranga are still named after my Granduncle, Mahi Miri.

Kritika was lucky as well. Many people go to Tiger reserves and end up waiting for days, unable to spot a tiger. I feel there's a higher chance in Kaziranga though. I was also pretty lucky, I saw tigers twice(1. two tigers resting together 2. one tiger stalking and hunting a boar) in the span of 30 hrs.

India has 104 national parks. That is probably more than most if not all countries in the world. But what is more important, is that these cover almost every kind of ecosystem - from hot arid deserts to cold arid regions with all kinds of grasslands, decideous, coniferous and tropical jungles - flat lands, mountsinous terrains and even swamps and mangroves. No other country can say this. Yes, Kaziranga was and is the only place you can see one horned rhinos. They, the tigers and the elephants were almost hunted to extinction due to the demand for their horns, tusks, claws etc in neighbouring China - very close by. India has done a great job in reviving their population. The Asiatic elephant and the Bengal tigers you saw here are also endemic to India, but you can find them in other national reserves. The tiger is incidentally, the national animal in India and Bangladesh. India is also the only country in the world with Asiatic lions and these are all in one national park. They have done extremely well (aided by the fact that there is isn't as much demand for their body parts). In fact the lions have learnt to live amongst humans. There are roads passing through the national park and people often see them crossing the roads or just sitting there while the traffic waits for the king of the jungle to get up and move away with his family. You can find these videos on KZbin. I happen to have a friend who passes through these jungles now and then and has sent me clips of lions on the road a couple of times!
