Spray Painting a Matte Finish Motorcycle Tank // Becky Stern

I filmed this video a while back and just hadn't gotten around to editing it because the tank still awaits some custom art, a topcoat, and final mounting on Smokey's hardtail XS650. But hey, when that happens maybe I'll do a part two! This video chronicles the tank's journey from bare metal through two coats of automotive primer and two coats of Hot Rod Flatz matte automotive paint. It was my first time using the Preval sprayers and I thought they worked well. Check out the Instructable for step by step details:

Heya Becky how ya doing :) So I want to paint my Harleyand I only have experience with rattle cans so I was going to give this contraption a shot, I think it's called prevail aerosol sprayer.But I got a quart of candy apple red and I probably shouldn't experiment on my Harley but was wondering if you have any tips. Thanks..

In California you can't put liquid paint in the trash. You are supposed to recycle it, dispose of it as household hazardous waste, or add an additive that turns it into powder. Nice paint job!

That stuff's not technically paint, it's catalyzed epoxy. It will harden just as it did on the tank surface, but inside the trash can. Here's the NYC instructions for throwing out paint (www1.nyc.gov/nyc-resources/faq/478/how-do-i-throw-out-paint): If the paint is latex-based, you can take up to 5 gallons to a Special Waste Drop-off Site. Recycle empty metal or plastic latex paint cans. If the paint is oil-based, you can put small amounts in a black garbage bag mixed with kitty litter, newspaper, or another absorbent material that will soak up the paint. To dispose of a large amount of oil-based paint, contact a private hauler or an environmental services company.

How do you deal with tanks with logos? My kz200 has the kawasaki written on there that I'd love to preserve!

Hmmm, tape it? Maybe clear coat first to seal the tape and prevent bleeding? I'm not an expert, this was my first time

Ohhh, I need to find myself a UK source for those jar spray cans! Is there a reason you use those over a compressor painter?

Only for lack of a spray gun and working compressor! They're pretty neat, actually.
