I've only really started watching a lot of your videos.. I can't believe you don't have 100X'S the follower's that you do have. Your 1 of the (to me) few KZbinrs that show all of how, with what & describe all the products & reasons you do what you do. I love it!!! I don't leave comments often or in many videos, but I did yesterday & told you about a table & chairs I want to redo & asked for your opinion for a small, easy to use sprayer, w/out a compressor & for someone who is now disabled. I have a buffet, bench, my own recreated dinning room table & chair's, a TV stand (turn into a coffee/tea bar w/wheels) & mirrors, shelves & ECT... That I've kept & want to redo for my own home, but then got sick & now very disabled... I really only hope you could give me ideas or suggestions some of your videos that could help me along this VERY long road, to make it easier??? I have a cart full of products from your website to get me going with all natural paints & finishes, so I won't get sick & will make these projects Sooo much easier for me to do, myself. But any info you can suggest would be greatly appreciated. As well as where to start purchasing products from you, on a NOW very limited income. I don't want to do much for profit, only large pieces I had in my large home, that now I could use the money to help me redo all my own pieces I've saved for so very long to redo for myself??? Sincerely Lori K

Excellent job! Wow! I have 6 chairs I need to paint and I cant get the paint to spread evenly so I have stopped at one. Id love to get hubby's help with it. I am waiting on my milk paint order to arrive and then we may hit up Home Depot or Lowes for a sprayer!!!!! I think seeing this video makes all the difference in the world as far as joint projects. Plus you have the added advantage of being proud of the work you did together. Then I can fine tune the pieces. Hobby Lobby does have some amazing adornments Id find a piece for! Thanks for the great tips on how simple that is to switch out vs finding a match to the exsisting fit.

Okay, Jeb, on the spraying and climate tips? I'm on the Coast. so we have a lot of pollen right now. And for a few months the sand flys. These little tiny nats. How would I avoid them getting on my piece and sticking to it? Or the pollen? Also what do you put down under your piece? Plastic? On the cement? How do you do the top? I know you have a dry climate and we have humidity year round. Just wondering how that effects the paint and drying stage. Thanks!!!!!!
@JamiRayVintage
@JamiRayVintage 6 жыл бұрын
It may take it longer to dry because of the humidity. And in the summer, when I spray outside I occasionally get bugs in the finish. But, since I distress I usually don’t sweat it. I’ve used a spray booth in my garage in the past that has worked great. You can get inexpensive ones on amazon. We have a very large canvas drop cloth under the piece when we spray. As far as finishing the top goes, if it isn’t finished by the original manufacturer, like tops and backs, I usually don’t finish it either.

Love all your furniture! So I spray paint most of my furniture that I sell. I use chalk paint. However I will be trying DIY soon. Anyway I tried poly acrylic from minwax in my sprayer and it was very bumpy. My sprayer was set at 90 psi. I would like to find something I can get at my local store that I can spray for quick turn over. I love wax but takes forever. . What am I doing wrong? Is it the product or the operator lol. My paint turns out beautiful but not the top coat. I do some farm house furniture but I also do midcentury modern and need a smooth finish . Help !

Turn your pressure down to 50-55 psi. Play with that. At 90 psi your spraying more air than liquid and it’s drying out before it can self level. Also, spray in the shade. Spraying in direct sunlight can cause it to dry out too quickly and be rough.

Spraying is using less paint too right? Just one coat?
@JamiRayVintage
@JamiRayVintage 5 жыл бұрын
Typically it uses less for us. Plus you also water the paint down to spray it so it’s not full strength.

Question....so I LOVE the color of a chalk color I bought. But when I sealed it in polyacrylic it darkened the color and I hate it. But I love the color Un-sealed. BUT I want the color for my table legs so those need sealed. Am I just out of luck? Help?
@JamiRayVintage
@JamiRayVintage 6 жыл бұрын
The color will usually deepen when sealed. you could try using wax instead of a liquid sealer and see if that keeps it closer to the color it is now. Maybe try some test spots that are inconspicuous with liquid sealer and wax and see what you like better.

What compressor do you use
@JamiRayVintage
@JamiRayVintage 5 жыл бұрын
I started out with an 8 gallon husky compressor and used that for a year. Then I got a 60 gallon husky compressor that I’ve been using since.

Can I use an electric sprayer with the same 3:1 ratio?
@JamiRayVintage
@JamiRayVintage 4 жыл бұрын
Yes it should work. You may have to tweak the ratios just a little depending on how powerful the sprayer is but not much.

This is what we use on our bigger pieces and what we use to spray in our HVLP sprayer. jamirayvintage.com/products/top-coat-sweet-pickins It has a nice matte finish like a wax and it’s very durable.

what type of compressor do u use?? 150 psi cake type perhaps?
@JamiRayVintage
@JamiRayVintage 6 жыл бұрын
I have a big 60 gallon compressor. When we first started spraying Zeb used a cake compressor but it didn’t have a big enough tank and we had to take lots of breaks while the compressor caught up. After the little compressor we used a 10 gallon for about a year, spraying on average 10 pieces a week with it. It would keep up but had to run the whole time so it only lasted a year with such heavy use.

Jami, please can you answer a question about the pieces that you sell at the gift shop? I have recently started refinishing furniture and putting it for sale at a friends store, I and wondering how do we figure out how to split the sale? I do all the picking/buying and hardware, repairs, delivering and refinishing of the piece but she supplies me with the chalk paint, wax and a place to sell it.

I rent my space for a flat fee every month and then I pay a percentage of everything I sale in commission to the shop. You’ll just have to figure out what’s fair for you. Every shop has a different percentage.

Does 60% sound like a reasonable number?
@JamiRayVintage
@JamiRayVintage 6 жыл бұрын
A lot of consignment shops do a 60/40 split. If you aren’t paying rent it might not be a bad idea. It’s too high for me personally but I sell quite a bit of volume so it’s better to pay rent and have a lower commission for me.

Jami Ray Vintage ok thank you, I just want to make sure it is fair for both of us and I wasn’t exactly sure. I had heard about the 60/40 percent on sales before so that’s why I asked. Love your stuff and love seeing your videos, keep up the great work.😊

Do you paint the top of the cabinet?
@JamiRayVintage
@JamiRayVintage 6 жыл бұрын
Whether spraying or brushing we typically don’t finish areas on a piece of furniture that the manufacturer doesn’t finish. Maybe if it was low and going to be seen we might hit it with a coat of paint but not in this case.
