I think this just cemented the idea that as much as i know most of us would love to see Skizz be a part of Hermitcraft, I'd rather be able to see as much as he allows us to see of him and not being incredibly stressed out with so much on his plate. I can only imagine being part of Hermitcraft is an intense commitment of time. Skizz, we'll support you no matter what you do! You're an incredible human and deserve rest and peace! When you work 40+ hours a week, AND you’re experience-oriented, you kinda have to cram everything in the little free time you get 🥲 most full time jobs offer two weeks of vacation time and that’s it… my schedule has changed and my work has actually increased but for the last two years I’ve been working 40 hours minimum during the work week, every other weekend, and on call 😅 granted I don’t work a “standard” job so you can’t really go “oh I’ll do it tomorrow” … if the phone rings, you are obligated. Life is unfortunately very work-centered here, partially out of necessity but also because we’ve been taught that if you work hard, you’ll have your whole retirement to relax. Unfortunately between inflation and social security disappearing the likelihood that I will retire at 65, which was the standard retirement age, feels MIGHTY slim 🥲 I’m 24

Skizz, as someone with ADHD, I heard so much of myself in the stories you shared today. I don't want to be an armchair psychologist, nor do I want to be presumptuous -- maybe you've already looked into ADHD for yourself in the past! But if you haven't, it really may be worth investigating. Either way, I want to share my own story with ADHD... All of THIS: *Getting lost in the work you're doing to the point that the rest of the world melts away *Having the best of intentions and STILL somehow managing to completely forget something massively important *Having a little person at the controls in your head thinking, "We're late for something. I don't remember WHAT, but something's off." *Leaving yourself sticky notes or phone reminders or computer pop-ups and STILL managing to somehow not notice them That's exactly how my ADHD manifests. It doesn't prevent me from being successful, but it DOES make me look like an a-hole sometimes, or it leads to me letting others (and myself) down. We folks with ADHD tend to naturally find useful coping habits that work for us, and often we use those habits to our advantage for YEARS before we ever even discover that we have ADHD. I think a lot of people hear "ADHD" and think "over-active kindergartener that can't sit still on the carpet." But for me, it wasn't until I was 25 years old that I discovered I had ADHD and started taking meds for it. The combination of meds + all those behavioral/organizational skills I've built over the past 25 years of life are what finally allowed me to feel fully functional, and now in my 30s I feel so much more on top of the forgetfulness and mess. I never even knew my brain COULD remember things on time until the meds helped. The first time I lost a train of thought, only to have it come back to me unprompted a few minutes later -- WOW. Mind boggling. There were so many times in my life as a kid and young adult before I was diagnosed when I thought I must just be some kind of mess and wondered what was wrong with me. But really, my ADHD was making it a little more difficult for me than it is for non-ADHD people to remember things or pay attention to details. To be honest, I hear you berating and belittling yourself over the same things I used to berate and belittle myself over, and it makes me sad. You are such an accomplished person, and ANYONE having as much on their plate as you do would struggle to juggle it all. But if you do possibly have ADHD or anything else impacting your attention/memory, it could be making things that much harder. I hope you don't mind me taking a moment to share some of my personal story. You, and Impulse, and every single one of the guests you have had on your amazing podcast have really enriched my life by sharing your personal stories, and if I can offer you the same I'd be so happy. I was a little hesitant to chime in (I don't usually comment on KZbin), but seeing some of the other listeners share their own stories about ADHD in the comments inspired me to do the same. If you haven't looked at the comments from @ddoublya, @RiviStyx, @dasffs, @BWSSoldya, and @sheepthevampire5413 (and anyone else who may also have commented about ADHD since I looked), I'd encourage you to! And if this is all old news and you already know whether or not you have ADHD or something impacting your memory/attention, then that's also great, and I'm sorry to butt my head into your business! One way or the other, I want you and Impulse to know how much this podcast means to me and brightens my days. Thank you both for all the effort and hard work (and fun and joy!) that you put into this channel.

Yep. I was thinking myself “I wonder if I showed this podcast to my sister (who has ADD), if she’d say this is an ADHD thing?” and then started watching a video on time management and ADHD, and the girl talking said 98% of folks with ADHD struggle with time management and time blindness, while 8% of the general population say they struggle with it. I think it’s helpful for those of us to bring it up, considering he’s never (to my understanding) mentioned ADHD, and if he doesn’t consider it and possibly does have it, he could be working against it. Not everybody fits in a box of “scheduling productivity”, and can’t use the same systems for it. (Meaning not everyone can be “falwless” like Impulse.)

Oh, this so much. If Skizz were to read one comment on this episode, it really should be this one above me. We obviously don't want to butt into the personal lives of people who, let's face it, we don't really know, but at the same time, watching someone struggle is so painful while knowing there are things that can help. I can't give much advice personally, as someone unmedicated who still struggles with many of the same things, but i have noticed from watching a large variety of Skizz's content so many things that line up. From time blindness and looking like a jerk to an outsider because you missed something super important as mentioned today, to the rattle of fidgeting with the poker chips on his desk, to the hyper energy with new interests, to people pleasing and suffering through something in order to not bother anyone....etc etc, I'm sure i've had to stop myself from armchair diagnosing this guy i've never even met because of at least 50 different things, but oops, adhd brain, can't remember all of them, because why would my memory want to be helpful? (/s) Anyway, i think unfortunately the two of them, through no fault of their own, have an outdated and stereotyped view of what adhd is, like most of us before we did some research. I mean, direct (talked over a bit) quote from last episode after they bounced between a bunch of conversation topics, "wow, it's like two people with ADD doing a podcast! * cue both laughing * No hate to the lack of knowledge though, it's an outdated term, but still used because that's what people were diagnosed with 30 or whatever years ago. If somehow either Imp or Skizz reads all this, we think you're doing amazingly guys, love ya to pieces, and i know you've got a lot going on, i mean what were you talking about here, of course But i implore you, take a look into ADHD if you haven't, it's never too late to learn something about yourself and change your life for the better :)

Skizz talked about his sabbatical memory and I wanted to chime in. You see, I retired from Satan's hellhole and workhouse and AFTER two years of retirement my son said to me, "Don't you get it? Mom, you don't ever have to worry about losing your job again because you are free!" That night, for the first time since I was a child I slept straight through 5 hours with no nightmares. Being a single mom was hard.

I'm glad I clicked play on this video. I'm a self employed online tutor and scheduling is something I absolutely have to master. For the opposite reasons actually! I can only do part time hours as the teens have school most of the time, and I find if I don't fill my days up, then its super easy for me to be unproductive and not get much done. I enjoy working from home, but it doesn't quite come with the same mindset as working in a physical office. I feel like if I achieved more with my day, set little reminders to exercise and step away from the desk, that'd I'd be a lot happier for it. Gonna make an active effort to plan more stuff that matters and will benefit me going forwards :) Thanks guys!

i relate so much to skizz’s struggles with reminders and calendars and such. it always feels like every other person around me has it figured out, so it’s comforting to hear ab someone else who is still working on it. based on my own experience i have some thoughts/ideas that may be helpful?? (to be clear, i am bad at taking my own advice and i also need to do these things lol) 1. physical calendars were very helpful to me BUT you have to remember to plan for the time it takes to fill out the calendar. the calendar was great for the first month or two and then it fell off my radar bc i didn’t have time to update my calendar to the new month. i made it fun to fill out with color coding and such (maybe that could help with prioritizing??) so that made me more likely to do it but it can still be difficult 2. maybe a custom do not disturb setting on your phone would be helpful. that way you can mute all other notifications (calls, texts, social media, etc.) but your reminders or calendar events still make noise and notify you. then only the really important and time sensitive things will ping you. my phone is always silenced bc the notifications will distract me but then i also don’t get the notifications i need. it’s a weird double-edged sword. i had reminders in my phone for years that gave me daily notifications to take meds or do a workout and i ALWAYS ignored them without even realizing it. now that phones have more customization options i prolly need to sort out my notifications too so that they work for me instead of me working to fit them. i find it gets draining otherwise
@luthien9074

Something to think about Skizz, get rid of the "white noise" from your phone. Turn off notifications for apps, mute conversations that you don't need to look at right away, step one is getting your phone off mute and onto vibrate instead. It's not super "in your face" but notifications still come through. I have "Do Not Disturb" set up on my phone so that it still allows calls and texts from favourited contacts even when on DND. My parents, my husband, and my best friend are all favourited so only their messages come through when in DND. Change the sound of your alerts. I also set up "snoozing" alerts because there's nothing more annoying than being reminded every 5 mins about something, but it also means I don't hyperfocus and forget that I dismissed an alert. Consider getting a smart watch that will vibrate or give you notifications while it's attached to you. Impulse, I'm sorry to hear you're feeling overwhelmed with VH - it really is something we enjoy watching you explore. I think you and Skizz could have a lot of fun doing the SkyVault mode. Take people up on dolls, level up to above 90 and get used to a build before the final vault - it'll be good to get a feel for end game mechanics, don't worry about asking for help, it's okay, but do it on streams and we'd 100% be down to watching it. :) I've played VH v3 since it launched with friends and it's SO much fun watching you explore it. I know modded is overwhelming, but this isn't a full playthrough, it's a crash course into exploring the pack with others. You don't have to grind or do it all yourself, just explore what is possible, which can help you plan your own playthrough in the future (trust me, I restarted multiple times because I felt I messed it up, so consider this your mess up run to try again differently eventually).

I can relate to a lot of this stuff! I'm in my first year of university and have my life meticulously planned week by week, keeping track of class times and assignment due dates and all that. I also work on assignments to what I feel like might be an unhealthy extent (I stayed up very late this past week working on some very tricky assignments and probably because of that, I couldn't sleep last night). It is also the case where I feel like time not being spent on work or studying is wasted time. Even when I'm doing something I enjoy and the assignments aren't due for about a week or two, I still have a gut feeling that I'd be better off working on those. I guess it's good that I over-commit because I can keep up with assignments more easily this way. But I really need to learn how to give myself a break... Edit: I also have the same problem that Skizz has at the end where I have time slots on my calendar dedicated to doing a little workout each day at the fitness centre, yet I'm so caught up with work that I almost never do so. I do commit to doing workouts ever Saturday, so there's that at least...

In regards to the people who WANT to do it all, and keep overloading because "Oh that seems fun, I want to do that." I have a suggestion. Have a notebook that you write down things that come up that you want to try at one point, if it comes up again put a talli mark or check mark next to it, and after something hits say 5 or 10 marks next to it, check your schedule and see if you have time to do that one thing. That will keep you from "over filling your plate" and it will keep it to where you have ideas for things to do if you end up bored or in a rut or whatever as a change of pace.

I'm the same as Impulse, feeling fulfilled when my day is ultra productive. But recently it's been like Skizz, where I find more joy in doing nothing. As currently a uni student, it was at first really rewarding to be on the go every time, studying and writing papers till morning. But after experiencing a sem break and the holidays break just last month without any academic responsibilities, it's just been SO fun to put my time into things I actually enjoy. This is the reason why I have a lot of pendings lately because I can't be bothered to do uni stuff. It's been quite hard to find balance and truly all I need is to keep committing while also not pushing myself too hard. Thank you for your talks, Imp and Skizz. I never would've imagined that I would actually give podcasts a try because the idea of it was just boring for me. BUT BOY, was I wrong when it came to the minecraft players I've always loved watching. It's been what I look forward to watch/listen to whenever I'm eating or doing plain old errands. Your podcast has made the mundane things in my life more interesting and bearable to do. Much love 💗

Skizz, it's evident to your fans that the job you do at "the company" no longer fits you... It makes you miserable, but it's "comfortable..." You know you'll be miserable, but you're used to the kind of miserable it makes you. One of the hardest things in the world is to leave a job you hate but are comfortable being miserable in - It's very similar to leaving an abusive relationship. Maybe if you start looking at it like that, you'll find the courage to wave goodbye to it. The world is big, but life is short. You WILL find something you enjoy (maybe content creation, maybe something outside of that), and you'll be so glad you finally found the courage to make the jump. I left a career of 20 years with great nervousness, and within a week, I was so relieved that I felt like a new person. I started my own business and have never looked back. Have faith in yourself like we have faith in you. Please don't waste another year of your life doing something that makes you miserable.

Such a nice podcast episode! It’s so nice to hear about how you both manage your time and your struggles with it, it’s super relatable. Sometimes I lose track of the things I need to do in the week or month, and feel like I’m constantly in a rush and things just slip. What has helped me and made a big difference is to take a few minutes in the morning to review what I need to do in the day. It really helps to take the time to manage time. I feel like I’m on top of things and it’s easier to remember what I need to do since I don’t get so overwhelmed. Thank you for the awesome podcast!

Skizz - The timer on your phone clock will go off no matter what else is silenced…..use that for special reminder alerts. It won’t say WHY, but it will alert you. You just need to use it to stop whatever else you’re doing and check whatever schedule app you use.

Skizz i am literally the exact same as you. But as a mom of 4 doing it 98% by myself it's a big deal when I forget things on the schedule. I have the same issues with reminders on my phone. I have found help in the wall calendar, writing things down at minimum 3 times to remember them, reminders in my phone with an app that doesn't remove it from my notifications until I check it completed, and then constantly reminding myself of the day and check lists are also helpful. (Plus they help you feel accomplished when you finish something)

My big struggle is judging how much time something will take. Recently removed a dead battery from a laptop & waiting for its replacement for a family member. The removal took 10 minutes, but it took me a week to find my tool kit. This then had ripple effects for the person who owns the laptop and so on. Really gotta give more realistic expectations of how long something will take, and be honest if you're not sure.

Listening to skizz reminds me of this one video I watched about ADD digital planning. There were three categories. Daily, must do, want to do. Something along those lines. Dailies were easy check-offs, the want to do's didn't have days assigned, but could be moved to must do's if the person wants to prioritize them. Etc. I'm sure I've got it wrong, but the point is, I think skizz prioritizes everything then nothing is a priority

Hey Skizz, just listening to you completely zone out and not just losing track of time, but losing track of life, it's made me think about something I've thought more often while listening to this podcast. Have you ever thought about asking a mental healthcare professional about a potential AD(H)D diagnosis? Or maybe looked up ADHD symptoms? You don't have to answer me, I'm just asking to raise your awareness and so you can maybe ask yourself these questions. I'm diagnosed autistic / ADHD (inattentive type a.k.a. ADD) myself so I recognize a lot of these sorts of symptoms and I think it might be worth it for you to at least do a bit of digging into the subject. Normally I'd say it's up to you to decide whether or not to delve into this, but given you are struggling, by your own admission, I would actually urge you to at least look into it. If you do end up recognizing yourself in ADHD then the odds are that you are struggling because the coping mechanisms you have developed aren't working as well as they could be (probably because they are modeled after neurotypical coping strategies, which don't work for neurodivergent brains).

I bought a paper calendar a few years in a row convinced I would use it and it never stuck until January 2023.. Now I can't even function without it. It sits on my desk, it keeps me in line. My point is, give yourself a chance to get that better planning in action because it's not easy to switch gears from what you've always done to what you want to do. ❤

Trust me I know all about scheduling and needing a calendar in front of me when I walk by an area constantly to make sure what I am supposed to be doing. After years of placing it in my phone and setting alerts I now have my daughter and even my mom put things I’m doing in their calendars and phones as reminders so they can text me what I’m supposed to be doing each day. Sad thing is I’m a district manager and still find time after working 5-6 days a week to still wanting to play minecraft or just sit back and watch a movie to have some down time for myself. It also helps me keep time schedule or not for my kids and mom to fill in the blanks of time. Y’all just keep doing the best you can and the rest works itself out in the right time as it is supposed to.❤

It's so easy to try to zero out your time filling it with stuff. I think another aspect of it is being present in the time we have. I think we tend to think were not accomplishing much becuase we are too busy thinking about whats next, especially as creatives. So since we dont feel like were accomplishing anything we have to add more stuff into the mix.

Oh, Skizz. You're not a poor planner. Your brain is trying so hard to get into the thing you're currently asking it to do and you're wrenching it away before it has a chance to get started. This makes it harder to focus, to remember, to be flexible. You need a break. Edited to add: When you reflect, I really hear a ton of being in your head and very little of your feet being on the ground. I suspect the folks that you talked about, the ones who are comfortable with where they are or who seem to do it all, I suspect they feel grounded. What grounds you?

Damn this podcast was relatable. I don't consider myself a workaholic, I tend to thrive with less to do, but I just love to do so many things, and I love to learn and practice at stuff to get better. I hate doing things halfway. So I tend to take on way too much at worse and have so much to think about and plan that I am always stressed and have a tendency to drop the ball on things that aren't as big, but still important. I hate it every time I do that, but it's happened so often that it's kind of a joke that I can be late for an event in the room next door. I think this was the most relatable podcast you guys have done yet, and thank you for making it. It's nice to feel seen and know it's not just me that feels stretched too thin because things keep happening and I want to balance it all.

Boundaries are so important! Especially boundaries with yourself and honesty with yourself over what you can realistically handle. Had to learn this recently after becoming a full time care taker of my disabled dad while still working, school, and wife’s busy life/school. Totally feel what you said Skizz, my brain shuts down too with schedules. Stress can be a huge factor. Make sure you two are not going at a burn out pace. These things you want to do will happen! We all want to see you both get there in a happy and healthy way no matter where “there” is.

I absolutely love this podcast, 100% relatable. I look forward to listening to this every Friday. Similar to what others have stated I do a few things: I adjust the start time on my calendar by 30 min so I am not late, I set the notification alarm to an annoying sound so I cannot ignore it, I add 2 hours to the time it should take due to “oh look a squirrel,” my wife and I use the same digital calendar so we can see each other’s schedules for when we are scheduling our own (we have different colors blue is me, yellow is my wife, green is family). It took us a couple of years to start this, and then another 6 months to make it a habit, but I would not want to do without it now.

Recommendation! Instead of using reminder notifications, use alarms on your phone The alarm that wakes you up in the morning. Something in a pitch that you can't ignore and have to actually pick up your phone to shut off. That's what I use & it works SO much better than calendar notifications. Plus, you can label the alarm so it reminds you what it's about.

Another awesome episode!!! This is such a great topic. I think most people struggle with finding time to do everything they want to do. Heck, I teach time management and I fail at it more times than I care to admit. First, humans tend to underestimate how long tasks will take by about 30%. So, the key is to plan less into your day. It used to drive me nuts that I couldn't do everything put on my to do list until I learned that you should only put things on your to do list for the day that you can reasonably get done in the time you have available on that day. In my experience, the other key to success is to spend some focused time each day with your planning tools, reviewing what is already planned and deciding on the most important tasks for the day.

Skizz, the double whiteboard thing is a great idea. I’ve used a whiteboard for a long time and it’s been great. Might I also suggest a smart watch. The alerts and reminders you miss on your phone are a lot harder to miss when they’re buzzing on your wrist. I don’t have as many meetings or things booked as it sounds like you do but I use an Apple Watch for trade alerts and important events. I don’t miss hardly anything anymore and I don’t have to be so glued to my phone 😊

Speaking of what if: Have you guys, or anyone else reading this, for that matter, heard of the book "4 3 2 1" by Paul Auster? It's literally all about this question. The book is about a young boy, Archie Ferguson, in New Jersey in the early 1900s and his fictional life story. At the end of the first chapter, something may or may not happen to his Dad's warehouse, making a massive impact on Archie's life. From that point on forward, each chapter is split into four, telling his lifestory, which takes a whole different path in each of the chapters. Whilst this story is obviously purely fictional, it does a fantastic job answering the "What if?" Question in an interesting and very relatable way, making it a real pageturner. Big recommendation, although you should put some time aside, as it is not the shortest

Bilbo baggins said it! This podcast felt like a personal ribbing, as many of my friends and family now fondly call me the 77% guy - I don't like to say no, it seems, and often overextend myself for others. Added to that, I am into a huge amount of different things, and project hopping leaves things unfinished or late to a deadline. My only saviour has been lists. To do lists line my pockets every day, and only my laziness can prevent getting things done. I'm learning to let go of some long term interests, in order to give my priorities the time they need. It's been tough because I miss doing some fun stuff, but the feeling of succeeding and completing things is pretty good. I still overextend on occasion, but with a greater understanding of the effort I need to apply, knowing I CAN complete has become an easier balance to keep. In regards to Skizz needing someone to nag him on his tasks, I'm your Fox. I submit the first stream interaction I experienced during an Imp and Skizz Skyblock episode, where a single slab was needed over your trees. I know where the buttons are. ;) Unrelated note: have you guys given Tango his present yet why not? Vote arcticfox for PA.

My problem is I use to be booked solid. No matter what day/hour it was I always had some sort of thing planned. I made many plans with friends and failed to meet a lot of them. When I started to lose friends due to always being busy and unreliable I swung to hard in the other direction. I now make no promises and people have stopped inviting me to things because I never agree to go anywhere. My brain convinced itself that I can't let anyone down if I just don't commit to anything. I'm working on fixing this but it is not easy. I like the idea of the point system. Divide the day in points and overbudget. I am stealing this.
