Can we revisit “what’s stopping you” in January every year? I’d love next year to have y’all include stories from listeners who were impacted.

Maybe add someone as a guest. I like to hear someone else’s view for such topics. Having Grian added for this talk would be amazing and probably funny I can already hear him procrastinate to come on this channel. 😂

I quit smoking years ago by flipping the switch in my head. "I'm no longer a smoker".. not " I'm trying to quit". Years later I did the same with alcohol. Now that I have quit bad habits, it's time to start good ones. Procrastination is my biggest hurdle.

Definitely! An update on their "how we met" story as they're older now and would have more to say (I love a sappy story lol), maybe talk about the reality of being a couple so publicly in the gaming world and how that translates to their life - advice they have. What Lizzie has been doing on the side when she's not making much content! They're some of my favourite KZbinrs, separate and together, and I'm always wondering what else Lizzie is up to. Maybe get some hints about what next SMP they'll be doing 😊

Skizz. A suggestion for that wall you want *without stress* : keep the green screen, use it to cover your (slow scheduled) progress on the build, until you finally reveal the finished wall, sans green screen. Those bricks won’t care when the next brick is laid. Do a row after lunch, or whenever. No stress. Gradual progress. “It’s happening” satisfaction. Exciting reveal. You can do it! ❤

I have to chime in here. I was binging y'alls podcasts (particularly the What's Stopping You podcast) while I was driving to Colorado for a class that I was really hoping would get me motivated to take the next step in a career that I have been working toward for a while now. I'm still stuck in a rut and haven't been able to get anywhere. I'm at a point to where I think there is something rooted deep in my mind that makes me freeze up when I try to move forward. I don't see how anyone can desire change so much and have such a hard time getting to that next step. I'm coming to the realization that it may not have been the profession that I wanted as much as needing to get away from what I was doing and making my own way. Procrastination has been my bane for a while now. I've learned in this past year, that it's actually a trauma response. While I still haven't gotten started, I did manage to make some positive changes in my life. I left my job which helped my mental well-being tremendously. Not long after I left, I completely quit drinking alcohol which also helped me mentally as well as physically. I also managed to stick to a workout program and am currently learning to love training my body. I've read that positive changes in one aspect of your life can fuel change in other parts.

“stop finding reasons why you can’t have it” is honestly so inspiring. i’m disabled and mentally ill, and i often come up with all the reasons why i can’t reach my dreams, but that’s just not the truth. anyone can manage to do at least a little bit of what they love!

Scar said something in one of his videos. His swim coach told him, "life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you respond." As a spoonie, that's helped a lot. Scar helped from being "I can't do this because of..." to this channel which has been a ray of light. You got this.

If you are stuck in your progression to play the guitar try to isolate why you can’t progress right now and try go improve that skill. If you are not accurate enough, try and slow down and do it a bunch of times so your accuracy can improve. Speed it slowly up from there till you are at the right speed.

My tip for getting going on a day-to-day basis is the "10 minute" rule: - Come up with an amount of time to spend working on a task that you feel is impossible to fail, that there's no way you could mess up. E.g. 10 minutes cleaning a room. - Do what you can working on the task for that amount of time. That's all there is to it. Working on something for 10 minutes is far less intimidating than getting the whole task done, so it's much easier to launch yourself into action. Often you'll find you can continue working past that initial time goal, because you've overcome the biggest hurdle -- starting. But even if you don't continue, at least you made an honest effort, which resulted in some progress. It's surprising how much difference ten minutes can make!

I wanted to start my own channel for a very long time, and your original 'what's stopping you' podcast is what got me going. I draw continuous support from a smaller discord channel I have been in for many years. I suggest finding a smallish group of people with similar likes or goals and giving each other that verbal/written support to motivate yourself. It has worked for me, I am proud to say that I now have subscribers whom I don't actually know, and I am happy with the work I have done. I am by no means a 'professional', but I am loving what I do and I thank you for the motivation to give it a try. At this point, I am now 18 episodes in, and each episode has had some viewership. It is not high numbers, but it is way more than the zero I would have had without putting the videos up.

My marketing teacher taught me something when I was 17 and will always remember it. You do or you dont. You can't "try" to pick up a pencil, you pick it up or you don't. So when our homework was not done and you say you tried to do it, his response is well you didn't because if you tried you would have something to turn in. He didn't grade you on correctly doing the homework, he graded if you turned it in.

Seeing what this episode was about made me cry. This wednesday morning my mom had a brain bleed. They werent sure if she was gonna be okay. She woke up late the next day and has started speaking. Today she made an attempt to get out of bed while being in the ICU in hospital. Ive been so tired lately and just got the adrenaline to keep going to the hospital twice a day every day now. My test week started today and she asked me why im with her and not studying and working (i work in a restaurant). She has been making jokes and messing with the nurses because she gets her energy from humor. Shes the litteral meaning of "nothing is stopping you" for me right now. She has been moving the affected side of her body and is scaring the doctors with how quick shes wanting to start movement therapy. Nothing is stopping you is the phrase that gets me up in the morning to go to her. I can't say how much i appreciate listening to this in the moments i can't be with her. Thanks for being awesome!

So I watched the first video just after a big break up and it was while I was decorating the new rental to make it habitable, that was 6 months ago, since then I have got myself going to the gym at a minimum once per week, I also train with my reenactment friends twice a week AND I'm now in the middle of editing my first ever Minecraft Lets play. I have achieved so much in the last 6 months alone because of that first video so I just want to thank you both so much for being a beacon of light in what seemed like a never ending dark tunnel at the time, I'm now much happier in myself and in a much better place mentally with so much to look forward to this year. You guys are fantastic. Plus this came out on my birthday, so what a fantastic present this is!

Hey guys, the original "What's Stopping You" episode made a tremendous impact in my life. At the time that it came out, I was in the middle of editing the first batch of 4 videos for this channel, and I was having serious reservations about finishing and releasing them. But that episode came at the perfect time to put the fire in my belly and just send it. Since then, it's been an absolute life-changer and the craziest roller coaster I've ever experienced. More subscribers than I could have ever imagined in this short span, connections that I didn't think were possible, and even international travel... As you know, it's been an absolute TON of work, but i guess I proved to myself that I really do want it. Hoping this turns into my full-time job one day, and I am working every single day to make that a reality. Thank you guys ❤

One of the subdivisions of "I really want it" is actually below "I don't want it" and "I kind of want it" which is simply, "I really want something else that's incompatible more." And no matter how much I want some things, that's the one that stops me most. The thing I normally want more is time with my family. And even that falls far behind providing for them, and those two things are sometimes exact opposites. So it's a cascading series of priorities, and I'm ruthless about defending those priorities, and that includes risk. Example: I could spend time with my family and provide for them at the same time if I were my own boss and made my own schedule. And that's possible. But if I fail at that, I've lost more than I'm willing to lose. Risk is real, and fear can be a good thing. (The flip-side to all this is while I may only have moderate success to the outside observer, I'm also insanely happy.)

When you guys say "Kinda Want it" It reminds me of a book I read called "Rebecoming" whose Author I don't remember. The writing was pretty average in my opinion, but the point of the story was the similar themes of Wanting and not wanting to change. The Three levels of wanting in that book were referred to as such: 1. Do Not Want 2. Want to want (but not directly wanting) and 3. Actual Wanting. When you "Want to Want it" you're in the stage of shaming yourself for not having done it yet, while simultaneously shaming yourself for thinking of changing at all. It's difficult to get past the shame that we grow up with to make positive differences in our lives and that very averagely written book helped me conceptualize that problem so I could even begin to want. There were a lot of other mental health steps between "wanting to want" and "wanting" and I am not sure I have actually made it to "Wanting" at all, despite having quit my job beneath a tragically unironic "Lumbergh", gaininng two more jobs and applying for a second degree. Is this Wanting? It just doesn't feel like I have gone anywhere yet.

I wanted to say thank you Impulse and Skizz, after watching part 1 of "what's stopping you" close to end of last year it flipped a creative switch in me. I wanted to start a content creation journey and I was doubting so much, but you real conversation and insight helped me to reflect and realize that I can do this if I'm willing to put the work in. Part 2 now encouraged me again, to keep going, the journey might be bumpy and difficult, and I might procrastinate and overthink but I'm moving forward, step by step, one art project, one video at a time. I can create my own catalysts for change. Love your podcasts and gaming content! Keep at it guys and thanks again.

Dude, some of us really needed a kick in the ass. I had been jumping from job to job that I knew wouldn't work for me, for 10 years. I was setting myself up on the failure T and getting mad when I swung at the success T and missed the ball entirely. The whole time, I had been putting off figuring out what I want to do with my life. I would justify it by telling myself I would figure it out once I found a stable job. So, I was in a rut of putting off the future to focus on failing in the present. Your words kicked me in the ass the way my family should have done years ago. That podcast episode most likely saved me from becoming hell for myself and those around me. Since then I've been more focused on mental health and becoming a better person, I haven't told many people but I've been slowly reading through self help books. Once I can afford it I'm going to start therapy. I also have a job I love now. I went in a completely different direction than I ever had before and instantly fell in love with my job because I picked one that worked with my brain rather than against it. I'm never going back to retail again. I have a plan for the future, I'm going back to school for a degree that will help me make my future dreams come true, and I might actually succeed in making it happen. You helped get the ball rolling with a simple conversation. Thank you, thank you, so much. ❤

I am trying to apply the Kaizen principle to doing stuff. Instead of just making a massive task of things I try to break it into the smallest credible part and then do that because when you achieve that you’re more inclined to want to do the next small part and before you know it you’ve done the whole task. The idea is that you’re looking to do something, but if the task is too big you’re more likely to leave it or put it off, but if something is small and achievable easily, you’re brain gives you a dopamine reward and your more likely to decide to do more.

This has really helped me. I've always been looked down upon for multiple different reasons. One was because I stutter and want to work in sports broadcasting, which requires me to speak a lot. Another one was I'm young. I'm really young to be where I am. I also am more privileged (money-wise) than my friends. It reached the point where I did not want to get/do anything I actually wanted. I kept being stopped, not by others, but by finding reasons why I shouldn't be the one to have it. Mainly because I feel like I am not the one who needs it since I am more privileged. Thank you for talking about this topic again! Both of the podcasts about this topic have been my favorite ones so far.

I’ve spent most of my life deathly afraid of failure and believing that I was unworthy of success. Only recently as I’ve been working to better myself as an artist to get into a specific art program at my school did I realize how much I really want it. Enough to look past the reasons why I can’t have it, enough to ignore my fear of having it, because I am more afraid of NOT having it. And so I’m submitting my portfolio for the program. I’m getting work together, I am going out of my comfort zone to talk to people. 38:52 when Skizz says to stop finding reasons why I can’t have it, it may not have changed me in that moment, but Skizz, you imbuing that energy into all you do has slowly opened my eyes over the last year and some y’all have had this podcast. Enablers impede the journey. I think a good podcast would be how to get family and friends onboard with your goals without the relationship suffering. Also, having different timelines or approaches to a goal when your spouse is involved. These two areas are still holding me up. I feel like if i would be successful if i lone wolf it, but i feel my relationship would suffer.

i struggle a lot with motivation and follow through on a lot of tasks - even ones that excite me. through some therapy i’m finding that i just need to give myself a lil more grace and be kind to myself. i keep myself from accomplishing things bc i’m proactively beating myself up for an imperfect product or because i’m not doing something in the way other ppl expect me to. some of it is also understanding that life changes and shifts and that means that some tasks may evolve and look different over time. i was a collegiate athlete and i have such a hard time working out at all now bc the only definition of “workout” in my head is a two hour workout filled with weights i hated lifting and conditioning that left me incredibly worn out (not to mention the competitiveness and negative self talk that went with it). i have to be a lil more gentle with myself and celebrate the smaller actions like going for a walk. it’s nowhere near what i used to be able to do but it’s still something and that should be acknowledged. the completionist and perfectionist in my head don’t usually leave room for error or for performance less than my peak, but i’m trying to unlearn some of that so i can really take off with things that excite me and stop holding myself back.

Just wanted to share some procrastination things! I recently spoke about this with my therapist because it is an area I struggle with, and honestly why I didn't make any big life changes after the last stopping you podcast. Procrastination often comes from rules we set ourselves that make no sense, like Impulse's Monday thing. If you can identify rules that keep you from starting something but don't actually matter, you can really start making some serious change a little at a time.

I'm so glad you touched on Atomic Habits. That book absolutely changed my life in big way. I really recommend it to whoever is stuck in a bad spot because of procrastination. Especially if you've already heard the same tips and trics every self-help speaker talks about on repeat but don't work for you. The author takes a completely different angle of approach and has lots of small and actionable things that really have an impact.

listening to this podcast inspired me to go back to college. I dropped out when I was 18 and always told myself I just wasn't cut out for it. but it was always something I wanted for myself. I got accepted a few months ago but I was apprehensive about actually enrolling. you've inspired me to go ahead with it. thank you guys.

I learned to allow myself the time I need to do a project. I suffer from severe back and leg pain. I still bake and cook for my grown family to make meals and things to send home with them to make their lives a little bit easier. it just takes me a lot longer to do these things than it would have a few years ago or someone else to do. I plan rest times into my day no matter what I have planned. I recently laid all new flooring (wood plank vinyl tiles). This project took me 3 months to do. I did one room at a time and took a week or so off in between each room. (sitting on the floor is one of the worst things for my back). Now I have the floor I wanted and the satisfaction of having done it myself. The point is, you can do it, but you have to be realistic for your life and circumstances.

I think one reason people fail is they do not know how to set S-M-A-R-T (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely) goals. This is something Skizz mentioned in a previous podcast, but I feel is key to this topic. People set too big (unrealistic, unachievable) or vague (unmeasurable, untimely) goals. Baby steps ….. start small and build up to the end result. Make it more manageable.

I was diagnosed with ADHD late in life and there is something to be said about knowing the thing that impedes you. Whether it's your own hang ups or something different with your brain itself, knowing "the why" stops you from feeling guilty about it and allows you to be proactive about fixing or managing the issue. I actually do similar things to what Impulse suggested to Skizz in order to get myself to do certain things.

What was mentioned around 36 minutes - thank you. You gave me a better way to recognise my issue (YT and fitness) - I think I'm just going to jump in with baby steps now. 5 minutes a day in the morning, 5 minutes a day in the evening. Thank you, it's a way better way to think of how to build my habits again after what I suffered.

I've been at this kind of stuff for years and I've learned for me, it's a weird balancing act of positivity, a desire to do more, feeling like I'm building towards something and a realistic starting point. Also, clearly defining why I want to do the action. My main focus is fitness at the moment because I feel like it's the catalyst to improving everything else I'd like to improve on. Positivity I'm excited if I did some form of exercise once but I'm even more excited if I've done it 3 times. I don't even think about or beat myself up for missing days because I know it's counterintuitive to actually keeping up the new habit. Even though I got knocked out of my routine for all of December and most of January, I don't feel bad about it. I'm just happy that I've learned how to kickstart things again by listening to podcasts that amp me up when I need it and I've restarted it faster than last time. A desire for more I'm aiming to do an intense bodyweight routine 3 times a week but I'd like to do Yoga or some form of cardio on my off days. So I'm simultaneously feeling good about myself when I do exercise but I also want to do more. Instead of feeling bad that I want to do more or beating myself up that I'm not exercising 7 days a week, I'm just happy that I have that desire. It means I'm in the proper mindset to build the life I want. Building towards something Every time I exercise, the habit is getting more solidified in my brain. Even when I get knocked out of the habit, once I get over the initial hump of starting again, I get better at maintaining the habit. Every time I exercise is a victory and every time I have to kickstart things after non-activity, I learn something new about myself and get slightly better at restarting. Realistic starting point I pretty much walked off and on for 2 years before I finally integrated a real strength building routine. I've rarely exercised most of my life and that was the only thing I could consistently keep up. That was my realistic starting point and I've had to learn a lot about changing my thinking in that time period. Some people might be able to go straight to the gym, I couldn't. If I tried to brute force it by being "perfect" I'd still be where I was 2 years ago. Defining what you want I'm more motivated by living a pain-free and emotionally balanced life than something like losing weight. So I work on keeping that in mind every day. There are tons of other methods. Like making it fun, which was mentioned in the podcast. These are just the main things that have helped me stay on track :)

Always a great listen and it's always amazing to listen to people who have a similar experiences with procrastination and such. I know for me I struggle a lot keeping myself on track with goals, keep putting things off, saying tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow and when tomorrow comes I keep pushing it to a later date. I often found seeing other people like friends, family, and people I look up to, do stuff that I want to do motivates me a lot to push past my mind telling me to do it later and do it now and do the things I want to do.

This episode is sort of a kickstarter for me. Really perfect timing. In the past few months, maybe half year even, I’ve felt like I’ve fallen behind in the amount of effort I put into things music (I take piano lessons, but have stunted my growth from lack of practicing due to procrastination and “it’s not fun” mindset… like three practices of 15-30 minutes at most each week.) Anyway, it results in a lot of negative feelings for me, feeling like a disappointment to myself and others. And I love all things music, but it’s become tedious and a negative experience for me. So, not a New Years resolution, but for myself, it’s getting up and playing more. Being more intentional to push through. I decided to do this last night, and now that I’ve finished the podcast, I will get started once I finish this comment. Procrastination and “I’ll do it later” has become the death of me in this area. For anyone habit-building like myself, I heard the tip of make the baseline really easy and dumb. (For me, two to five minutes of practicing a day, or during the week. The baseline is so easy that it’d be laughable if I didn’t finish it.) It’s making the task more palatable than “practice 45 minutes each week day and then feel terrible about yourself because you can’t motivate yourself to do that much, let alone 30 minutes”. That’s my spiel for the day. I may show up in a twitch chat and talk about the success. (Because yes, I will do this. We’re saying it here, folks. I will be more consistent and show up for myself in this area.)

A trick to getting starting is making sure your project you want to tackle has both big and small tasks. Big tasks are what will make the most progress, but the smaller tasks are essential for rebuilding momentum. The first step is always the hardest so do what you can to make it easier. For example, if you're updating your streaming setup and you realize a cable needs repositioning, don't do it immediately. Even if will take 30 seconds, write it down somewhere to save for later. Then the next time you come back to this project and need to build up that momentum again, you have that cable to move. It takes only 30 seconds, and you can cross it off your list to get that little dopamine hit. From there you can ride that wave to get back up to speed. I can't tell you how many projects I've burnt out of because I knocked out all the easy stuff early on and only had the larger stuff for last. Interlace them best you can.

It's inspiring to hear how others navigate those challenges. Looking forward to more thought-provoking content like this. Your podcast episode hit close to home, Imp and Skizz! After listening, I reflected on my career as an IT professional and realized I was letting fear dictate my path. Thanks for being the catalyst for positive change in my life.

37:13 Dr. K from HealthyGamer made a great point there a few days ago: If you set up a huge goal, every small step becomes less significant in relation to the goal. So let's say you want to go to the gym 5 times per week. That's 260 days of the year. Skipping a day is just about 0.4% percent of your goal. But if you tell yourself to go to the gym 5 times this week and skip a day, it would be 20% of your goal that you miss.

Another great podcast, I heard the first one and got to work. The most important thing I discovered was you need a why. I want to lose weight is such an open-ended goal. The why is so important, it needs to be stronger than those days that aren't fun. It can be done and it is worth it.

I also find the best way to start something is to lock an activity you really enjoy behind doing it. For instance, if you really like cookies you gotta finish your dinner before you get one. And if you break the rule add a punishment. If you eat a cookie before dinner, you need to eat extra veggies or you have to do something you don't really enjoy. My parents made us do 10 jumping Jack's whenever we were rude to each other growing up.

These are always interesting, especially to me who puts off projects. (Currently as of me typing this I haven't finished watching. I'll finish it later as I need to sleep.) But I think my main issue are laziness. That's a habit I've struggled to kick for years. I'm not there yet, but I have been trying. As for goals, I don't know. I guess finishing up an animation project and drafting 3 stories finish. Definitely more art, I have so many ideas. It's just that life outside of the digital space calls. (It's completely separate from this yt space.)

Just wanted to say how much respect I have for you Skizz. We’re similar age, and work in the same industry. I couldn’t imagine trying to just juggle work, family, and the streaming/life series. It’s really inspiring to me. I play Minecraft with my 12 year old and I’ve gotten to become a huge fan of the “older” players that show age doesn’t matter. If you are fun, and empathetic, people will be drawn to you and watch. I’m really excited and enjoying Hermitcraft so far. Keep it going, and this episode is great. I literally just changed out our network equipment…a week after it got here.

I had many of the same issues as Skizz. I've just come out of an ADHD diagnosis at 41, and even though Skizz may not have the same, I've found some coping mechanisms that really help. I have an app called Due that yells at me all the time, and I wear an apple airpod that announces the notifications to me. or you can have them pushed to a watch. You can set a mode wo no social media can come though, just the Due app and a calendar. The calander is a good idea, but if you are away from your office you will have to remember to add in anything later. Maybe another monitor with a calanering app specifically only used on that, then you can update when you are away, but its in your face in your office. I also set timers on my watch and started using a pomodoro at work so I come up for air every once in a while. Just some ideas!
