I want to live in a world where people would recognize Binswanger. Also, Yaron likes Rucka, but dislikes his "philosopher" friend.

I would recognize Binswanger. :) And Yaron can't hold a candle to Charles Tew as a philosopher. I'll give him that he's the better speaker.

Objectivism is to philosophy, ethics and politics as electrification was to human living standards.

I don't agree with everything the Rand Institute advocates for, but it's a damn sight better than the overly authoritarian republican party. I don't think being subtle, and trying to win allies, is the route you want to go in. Rather than compromising with the tea party, and the republicans, and the libertarians, you should be trying to win supporters from them. Show them what you have to offer that the others don't.

Overly authoritarian republican party? Which party has passed more laws to violate rights than the other, Hint Ecolotry, which party has CUT taxes more and DEREGULATED more? Hint "The swing to the Right is a movement away from Collectivism and statism [ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regressive_left as opposed to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-wing_liberalism ] and towards Individualism and Freedom. Genated it has not acquitte itself well in the last election; Trump is a leftist faking right and the good done by his administration is the result of hired guns promoting what he is at heart, opposed to, but look what the Demsocrats have done - The latest being guilt by allegation. What Party do you think "totalitarians" means in "university-media-totalitarian complex". To quote Scotty "Would you like to rephrase that, Laddie?" and BE AWARE you are in the presence of very politically astute persons; so don't embarrass yourself
@billlupin83456 жыл бұрын
Oh, well. Obviously the republicans aren't authoritarian, it's just Trump is left masquerading as right. I suppose the Bushes were secretly left wing too? By the way, mr. politically astute, I don't think you know what left and right wing mean. Hint: individualism and freedom is libertarian, not conservative. Libertarianism stands for individualism and freedom, as opposed to authoritarianism, which stands for the state and collectivism. Left wing stands for social change, whereas right wing stands for the preservation of social order. You can have left wing libertarians, just as you can have right wing fascists. You can have left wing totalitarians, and you can have libertarian capitalists, which probably surprises you less. The takeaway is, don't talk down to people when you don't know what left and right wing mean. At least you realize last election was a shit show. So goddamn many republicans don't see that. I refuse to vote for the lesser of two evils on principle.

They are all authoritarian to a greater or lesser degree, that is an inherited trait, If they did not all have some bits of it in them, I would look for the TARDIS and the Time Lord who abducted me and set me at some time in the future.. but to single out the GOP in the presence of the actions over the last half-century of the Democrates is, to quote the Bible "complain about the mote in thy brother's eye and say nothing of the beam in thine own". The GOP is muddled. What can you say of a party whose president, in 2012 used the IRS to attack his political opponents and then claim it was an accident? Actions speak louder than words, I ask again, Which party has a BEHAVIORAL RECORD of raising taxes, debauching the currency, gun confiscation (the Bush gets a nod here too), enactaing a blizzard of regulations and giving us Bernie Sanders? The comparison is like that of a B-29 to the Death Star. As I said the university-media-totalitarian complex
@billlupin83456 жыл бұрын
I singled out the republicans because I know my audience, and I don't preach to the choir. How many democrats do you think I'm liable to encounter here? The president had nothing to do with IRS scrutiny of tax exempt status. Also, an investigation by the tax inspector general (appointed by George W. Bush,) concluded that the IRS was targeting terms associated with both political parties. Well, let's see. Nixon raised taxes. Ford raised taxes. Carter, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton, they all raised taxes. Dubya cut taxes, but Obama opted to perpetuate the tax cut. Now we have Trump lowering business tax, but most businesses have opted to pay dividends rather than create jobs. That's the problem with supply side economics, tax cuts work very well when taxes are really damn high, but at this point, we're just increasing the deficit. You'll need to lower spending first. (And y'know, I don't think cutting two cents on the tax dollar in welfare funds is gonna cover that.) Incidentally, I went to college here in 'murica for mechanical engineering. I can't speak for the liberal arts campuses, but I had several professors who were pretty openly conservative. Ideology isn't really brought up in class, we're paying good money to learn math and science. So, my experience of college, I didn't see much totalitarianism. (Been to Drexel and Rensselaer.) As regards media, can't really call that totalitarian either. It's sensationalist, so when they pick an opinion, they pick it hard. On the one hand, you have msnbc, but on the other, you've got fox. You've got colbert, and you've got infowars. Personally, I prefer the Wall Street Journal and BBC.

The audience here is pretty politically astute, so they would know what you are up to. And since you were purveying a falsehood, singling out the GOP when everyone here knows that the Democrates are the bigger problem, you would lose credibility as either a panderer, troll or a neophyte in over your head and all you could really snare are the unschooled or the unwary. The most that can be said of the Republicans is that they are muddleheads -- Now THAT would have some cache here

The concept of teaching objectivism is ironic because one cannot teach freedom of thought without its corruption.

I chuckled a little at this...but its not a very good joke.

The death of the individual is the existence of others. That is why true objectivitism spreads slowly, it must be found not taught.

This dude boast about making a lot of money with his companies then ask for more money from the crowd?! if he made so much money why he did not pay for the digitization of the Piekof tapes? Looks like this dude is in the business of making money and philosophy is secondary to him.

Tech Tacho Its obvious that the dude is already a millionaire so is in his self interest to help the institute, it will give him pride. Sometimes smart people get hold of good willed people to extract money, I am not saying this is the case but is funny to me when a guy who made a lot of money in the past need financial help.

Give it a break dude. They're already releasing tonnes of stuff on KZbin and Soundcloud, and Atlas Shrugged is a beast of a book to get through anyway. The material is out there, for those who are genuinely interested. That's all the matters. Stop being such a whiner.

You're right: he could have simply paid for the project out of his own pocket...as a donation...as could many who sit on the board or who donate. However, that wouldn't solve the problem. The problem is how to engage the current community of Objectivists (young and old) and how to expand through outreach into the non-Objectivist community. Soliciting for volunteers who have the expertise to do the work will not only get this particular project done, but will build the relationships to get the next project done...whatever that project may be. He wants to build a network for current and future projects. There's nothing wrong with that. By digitizing the archives and putting them up on KZbin (and other social media platforms) the likelihood of an expansion of the Objectivist community is far greater. This is marketing 101. Ayn Rand didn't stipulate that the heir to her estate couldn't or shouldn't make it available for free. I see it as a means to stimulate more discussion and stop the distortions some people love to create concerning Rand's ideas and positions on certain subjects; like her supposed disdainful or dismissive attitude toward children, or her supposed "sell-out" to welfare in her old age. Those of us who have read her works and listened to her speeches know these are deliberate distortions...why not put it all out there? As for Tal's finances...I'm not sure why you think there's a conflict of interests between making money and teaching/directing an organization like ARI. Or perhaps you don't believe philosophy has anything to do with the ideas that enable people to make money...?
