Hey guys, I know I said last finals video for a while but I think this one's worth making. Game Developer I/O is still off sick, so the much less likeable Critic I/O is covering his shift.
In this video, we're talking about how publishers seem to think they know better than game designers. Hope this one doesn't come back to bite me in the future :)

Also, true believers may be worried I'm suddenly pivoting away from game dev - I'm not. The goal of this channel is to make stuff related to game design that I'm passionate about/ find interesting. I was a critique before I was a dev channel, and while I am of course endlessly thankful for all the support on Strata, I need to keep my artistic muscles stretched by making a lot of different stuff. Love y'all!

also online sports manager games essentially are just spreadsheet games - tactics can matter but in the core it is about who has biggest numbers (and before u can compete u might have spreadsheets about how to reach there economically)

A big part of the problem with modern development/production in mediums like film or video games is that the managing bodies of organizations have, more often than not, forgotten their function in the creation process of these products. The function of management is to keep the creatives operating within the realm of reality, and to keep the organization chugging along and producing. But that's not how modern management sees things. Modern management is commanded, by and large, by a strict doctrine comprised of two elements - risk reduction and maximizing shareholder value. They reduce risk by watering everything down to appeal to the widest range of people, which lets them generate the most profit, which increases the value of their shares, which holders then sell to line their own pockets. What the actual consumer base wants, or the long-term wellbeing of an IP or product - more generally, are not factors that enter into the decision making as they do not match up with a theoretical profit potential stemming from an imagined consumer base.

I would've liked to know what this terminal attack gamemode is and why it is so bad. At least give a brief summary of the mode and its problems. Not everyone who watches this video has played it and it's hard to follow your argument when as soon as the new mode is mentioned I'm out of the loop.

terminal attack is basically your clasic 5v5 bomb gamemode, like in cs2 and r6. as for why is it so bad... idk lol. i dont hate that mode but dont enjoy it much either. at the end of the day if you really wanna play 5v5 bomb you'd be better off playing something like cs2 imo.

@@exylos_m the maps weren't built for flow, or visibility. The defenders are almost always getting fucked by the attackers cus team mobility tools are only available to the mid class. Light defenders can snipe from a billion years away making it almost 0 counters. The attackers literally do nothing for the first 10s during the matvh and everytime you win or lose a round there's a loading screen. Dookey all around
@DavidFan
@DavidFan 7 ай бұрын
To add on to exylos comment, 5v5 search and destroy isn't intrinsically a bad game mode. It just doesn't work within The Finals (to clarify, I wouldn't say it's IMPOSSIBLE to implement, but it would be insanely difficult). The finals more or less plays like an arena shooter with fast pacing, high movement, chaotic gameplay, and high TTK. Now think of games like CS and VAL, slower games, slower movement, tactical emphasis, and extremely low TTK. It doesn't look good on paper. In addition, TA has no depth. The maps aren't designed for it, there is no economy, the game isn't balanced for one life/no healing, and there is little to no clutch potential if at a numbers disadvantage. It just ends up being less fun experience overall.

Summed up: The Finals has always been a fast chaotic adhd game and thats why the players love it. Terminal attack is the opposite.

It pretty simple though why Terminal Attack has become the Ranked game-mode and was made to be the new player experience, the game is not meeting its return on investment/set goals. It has a relatively small playerbase compared to its previous highs and to other massive competing games. As such, the big-suits at Nexon have definitely played a part in this initiative. Seeing that TA's core is similar to other popular giants(cs2,valorant,r6siege), they've pushed it into the spotlight to try to gain and retain new players. A product cannot be sustained on charity, and The Finals has to at least recover its invested costs and meet ideally its goals. What is to note however, is that their core playerbase they have fostered is very loyal and enthusiastic, and that now, they have finally started pushing up their efforts in advertisement($250,000 at the game awards and the Twitch Rival events). There are alot of different things they could have done before switching up the core gamplay loop- and things that need relatively less investment than a quarter mill on a single advertisement. My input on it, they need to improve the new player introduction- its not that new players can't understand it, its just a completely new concept to them. Improving the tutorial and learning systems so these players understand ideas of the gameloop and communicating the game philosophy of alter, exploit destroy would definitely help. Teaching things like stealing and throwing the cashbox, manipulation the environment and playing to advantages like high ground, or even smaller things like how long it takes to steal a cashout. I would also suggest providing more incentives for current players to act to reach out and draw new players in, referral programs for free cosmetics for both the referer and referie(though probably only after a certain playtime thershold) would go a long way I believe, and rewards for players sharing their experience(advertising) the game- like meeting a viewership number for a video or popular posts about the game from a social media account. They really just need to reach more people and have those people to understand what the game offers as its such a rewarding game to play, and not just that it gives you free digital items, but that you WIN from through creative thinking ie thinking outside the box, from adapting and being quick on your feet, and from being able to plan and strategize(honestly, its at the point where I think there needs to be be more mechanically low-skill weapons like the flamethrower just because how much skill expression outside of that in this game). Its one of the most unique and fun games there is, and it deserves to be so much more than it is right now.

This is amazing. Its very sad how complex your analysis on this game has to be in order to understand this and stick to the game. I think that's its biggest downfall. The hardest to understand games and media are of course the most artistical works, but often are not the most popular and are drowned out by the sound of the masses.

I honestly think that they could easily meet everyone in the middle by combining the cashout an TA modes to create a new mode for ranked. Imagine this for ranked. 6v6 cash out style play but multiple vaults can spawn at the same time. Cashout locations an vault locations are random an respawn/change every few minutes. No respawns but you can however spend your teams cash to respawn. Gadget CDs and reloading ammo is also tied to your teams cash total. I.E you have to buy more ammo but every team starts with a minimal balance to get going. First team to certain cash total wins the game. You can also stop at randomly spawned terminals to pay certain amounts to trigger certain map event variables. This can either be used as a way for a team that's behind taking a risk an betting what they have to try to get a variable that's to their advantage in hopes of clutching a win or by a team that's already ahead an trying to seal the deal. Another great mode I was thinking they should add for casual play, not ranked, would be a gun game style mode. 4 teams of 3 where each killing blow a contestant lands moves their team onto the next weapon in that class's toolkit. After your team manages to get a kill using each of heavy's weapons you respawn as mediums an work your way through those an then onto light and their weapons. The kicker being once you reach the end of light's weapon list to get the winning point your team (as all lights) have to score a kill with just quick melee damage. Spec and gadget loadout choices can just be configured from the same matchstart screen but give em maybe a few more seconds because you are setting up three classes instead of just one.

Great video! 17 mins of pure quality content. Small correction though, Power Shift was never an LTM, it was introduced as a permanent gamemode with S2 from the start. Also I slightly disagree about on the points made on World Tour, I don't believe it's as sweaty as you've described. Playing world tour I constantly run into, spears, 3x Lights, dual blades and generally other extremely off meta and fun setups.

I've played enough of TA to get the skins and contracts done and never touched it since. But power shift is really fun, with its own unique strats and loadouts. World tour is not too bad (as a bronze). My biggest problem with it is the skill disparity among teams (at bronze) and the fact that one person immediately disconnects from my team 1 time out of 4.

This guy's overstating a problem that doesn't exist cash out is not deleted it's now just called World tour which is the same game mode but without any of the pressure of being in a ranked system allowing for people to not just always use the meta options or get flamed in chat. Cash out has many problems when put under a ranked mode. Modern Gamers always think the ranked mode is the most important mode but it shouldn't be an in this case it isn't. Ignore all the hate for the new update it had many great balance changes that made the game way more enjoyable and less towards the annoying meta it was before. Tldr play the game it's fine cash out still exists in the exact same way it existed in season 2 it's just no longer ranked which is a good thing.

I love the finals. One of the most polished AAA game engines of modern gaming. But it just feels so directionless. They add so many abilities that it doesnt feel like an FPS. Theres not enough counter play to certain metas and comps. Theres not enough new weapons or deeper weapon balance (beyond -2 damage kek) to shift gameplay metas. There is no staying power because the cash is irrelevant round by round. There is no benefit to winning by $80k vs winning by $4k. IDK just my 2 cents Terminal attack is bad too because there are no tactics, due to the the game engine at its core being too chaotic.

i cant speak for the new mode, but i did not like cashout when i played the game it felt like the objectives were way too spread out for the number of players on the map and i spent 90% of the game running to where ANYTHING was happening the player count is already quite low for maps of this size and if they are split into two objectives it felt....empty it felt exactly like playing a 64 player match of battlefield when only 12 players are in the server

The game looks like a chaotic mess that I just couldn't keep track of, no-one to play with and skill issue. xD I'm pretty casual myself, I don't have time to dedicate to gaming like I used to, so overcoming skill issue is question of time allocation more than anything. I *could* practice, learn and get better. (like I used to) But it takes time away from other things I consider more important (gosh, more important than gaming, I really have got old haha)

This does look really fun, but I can't help thinking these buildings are way too fragile. Honestly, there is only a small percentage of intentionally built structures on Earth that can be completely demolished with a grenade or two, aside from the "wood shed" type of shelter. Entertaining, but it would likely frustrate me tremendously if someone brought down a building on me with grenades. Making this a matter of setting up a series of charges before bringing it down would make this more palatable, but hey, it does look really fun.

Honestly yeah there is a silent portion of players who are interested. New players! Clearly, the game has been bleeding out for a while now and players have been doomsaying because of it. They wouldn't have doubled down on TA if it wasn't a popular game mode. The waiting times have been as short as cashout (if not shorter) since the game mode released. I've met countless new players in TA matches, many of them UNPROMPTED exclaiming how much fun the game is, and how glad they are they've tried it! I've heard people saying they left in s1 but are back and enjoying it again. Even my friends are playing the game again because TA brought them back, and they're enjoying the world tour more than they used to enjoy cashout, to boot! I know for a fact my friends aren't watching FINALS creators, let alone participating in polls about game modes lol. Those spaces are an echo chamber for people who care about the game, people who already play the game. And as I mentioned, as we all know, the people who play already, have been slowly leaving since the start. They won't bring in new or returning players by continuing to do the same thing over & over. More over, if what they say is true, cashout is still the focus of the finals, and they have only done this to fix some issues and make it more competitive in the future. I mean they just hosted a cashout tournament. Cashout is clearly not going away.

Embark CEO is the same guy who ruined battlefield 5
@TheIntelligentVehicle
@TheIntelligentVehicle 7 ай бұрын
I don't know that history, but I think it's too easy to just blame Nexon, if that's partly what your statement about the Embark CEO implies. For instance, it was clear that Embark invested heavily into TA going into S2. Similarly, Power Shift was never a limited-time mode (suffice it to say, some of the details that went into the argument in the video seem a bit off). And I don't really blame Embark either. It's possible that players consciously or unconsciously demand more and more new game modes, which I'd say is a shame. Anyway, to get back to that thought, Embark had been building up the whole CNS story line. When TA was introduced in S2, they had all the cosmetics for Vaiiya ready to go, etc. I'm not even sure one needs to speculate about this. The top people at Embark have basically said that they had the storyline for the first several seasons all planned out in advance. Then you forget that everyone in S2 complained about the previous ranked system (people seem to forget that the "arrows" were meant to be an improvement from what they started with!), the matchmaking, the third-partying, the lack of transparency around ELO, and on and on. Ironically, I agree with I/O overall -- it really feels like something went wrong with how THE FINALS has played out so far -- but I get there a totally different way. First, it's hard for me not to feel like it's the relatively small team that's held Embark back (especially given the ongoing investment of resources into ARC Raiders as I understand it, since I'm pretty sure Embark representatives have communicated as much). I don't mean a bigger dev team necessarily, but all of the supporting functions to make the game a success. If that's the case, then one could argue (although perhaps not convincingly) that Nexon hasn't been involved enough and has given Embark perhaps too much autonomy. Nexon has $5B of cash on its balance sheet last I checked and has been willing to make large investments in the past, but it doesn't feel like that's what we've gotten here. Second, I really think that it's the artists' prerogative at work with Embark, and that has included really de-emphasizing the "game show" storyline and lore almost from the start. It's not too surprising that the game has wandered far from the core Cashout mode when most of the story so far has been about CNS basically hijacking if not destroying it. I doubt comments like mine can ever be popular (who defends the parent company? btw - Embark is technically the publisher and that may also hint at the dynamics at work and just how much or little autonomy Embark has at this point), but I just want THE FINALS to succeed, and for that reason, I give Embark the benefit of the doubt. I assume they're the ones in charge and they're the ones most invested in making the game work. Even if they're desperate enough to use spreadsheets to try to figure out what to do next. P.S. I'm well aware of Nexon's controversial comments during their last earnings release and webcast, I just don't read quite so much into them because I find them ambiguous enough (basically, "the results have been underwhelming, Embark is trying to figure out why and what to do about it"). While "working with the Korea-based Live Operations team" is def a provocative statement, I think I recall hearing that while Europe and NA have performed pretty well, it might be the rest of the world, and Asia in particular, that have disappointed, and this could help explain why Korea is getting involved. Or it's just Nexon... :)

I have nothing against people who preferred ranked cashout, but I am certainly glad that they made a ranked playlist for Terminal Attack because without a doubt in my mind TA is much more competitive. I've made many complaints that cashout is too chaotic and unstructured, you even admit it appeals to hyper-casuals because of this. I am also personally not a fan of 3rd party mechanics, period. However, I do prefer the flow and movement of cashout, and I hope whatever improvements they make to cashout takes the best of the original cashout and the more competitive/strategic/tactical structure of Terminal Attack. Furthermore, there's a reason why the simplicity of team fortress 2/overwatch objectives work in a chaotic environment, so I'd like to see them consider doing something like that.

Honestly, modes built for casual audiences really should be the priority for games. When you tailor a game for casuals, you encourage em to want to stay, to improve their skills naturally as they play. Here's but an example, back when Krunker did not have instability and aimbot problems, I ended up getting really good in casual lobbies, enough to the point where I was getting into gold leagues when they had comp as a thing. Then they stopped trying to maintain the game, they snorted the loot box pill and tried to repeat what TF2 did. This led to them doing some bad updates for servers, neglecting their moderation, among additional things, and now the game has an extreme fraction of the peak playerbase it once had. Also they want to remove my damn primary weapon, the Semi Auto, which just pisses me off even though I don't play anymore. That thing is my baby and was the perfect blend between a sniper and a machine gun, but noooo, none of the players who build metas like the gun, so it must not mean it is worth keeping. Like, I'm sorry, but unlike the unbalanced nature of the revolver, the semi has the best balancing across the arsenal.

@@I-OGameDev100% I guess it's okay for people to complain a little bit about how they hate TA and prefer cashout until the devs listen, but at some point you have to acknowledge the players who do prefer TA (or at least the idea of a more competitively formatted mode). The more nuanced conclusion people need to make is that The Finals is good but the team are still figuring things out, let's not get so up in arms about it and still try to have some fun playing the game.

@@Kimjong-disco-pc9ti you think they will randomly stop there at shoving garbage in to the game? They got away with stealing once already, so why would they stop there. They probably just grew smart enough to stop advertising the game as shovelware made with legalized stealing.
