Laryssa, I am a 2nd year rookie when it comes to keeping bees. Recently I mowed around the hives to keep the weeds and grasses around the hives short, and they 'attacked' me, being surrounded by multitudes of the little darlings! I have four hives and have been mowing around them for the 2 years I have had them. They stung my hands through my bee keeplng gloves, plus a pair of heavy leather gloves! I am about ready to give up. You always have such great advice, so how can I keep this from happening again?

Yikes! Are they also overly aggressive when you inspect the hives? If it's just when you're mowing around them, I would give them some extra space and not get too close. You should see how tall the grass is around some of my hives :) I just walk around the entrances to get the grass flat so the grass isn't blocking the entrance and I also give them an upper entrance. Definitely don't try a weed wacker or a hand tool (I learned that one the hard way). Maybe you could lay some gravel or weed cloth around the hives to keep the grass down or put the hives on taller stands or palettes so you don't have to mow too close to them? I remember talking to Michael Bush and he said he uses upper entrances so he didn't have to mow around his hives.
