SPRING BOAT PREP - How to Replace Zinc Anodes to Prevent Corrosion on Your Boat

Spring boat prep continues as Captain Brian replaces zinc anodes on our Sea Ray to protect the boat from corrosion issues. He explains how saltwater can react with the metals on your boat and why replacing your zinc anodes every year or two is so important. He also takes a look at a Mercruiser outdrive with Bravo III props and points out issues that can happen with them if there are not enough zinc anodes on to protect it. I know allot of people that say u got to tap the zinc plates with a hammer to help connection. That true?, they typically do it where the ball is.

Hmm never heard that one.. we sand a little & tighten to make sure contact is good and has worked well for us for years - and deteriorated zincs end of season prove they worked 👍

So my boat is salt water and the tech told me to use Allum. anodes for my rudders and SS tabs. well 2 months later GONE. what a mistake that was.

Oh boy! Yeah absolutely not.. aluminum is for fresh water. 😬

So the zinc simply needs to have clean contact with a metal part of the boat, below the waterline. There is no direct connection with any part of the electrical system?

Correct. The idea is that any electrolysis attacks the zinc & not components on your boat like your props, etc.
