Just got my flasher box and this thing is handy. So simple and so convenient thanks to Glen and David for sharing the info. Wish the agitator brands would fit in there with that different bend of the flasher. But you can just store them on the sides. Fish on fellas

Thank you, Michael. It's always exciting anticipating springers but they do a good job of frustrating us all. It was nice to get out today and the river was very calm.

David Pyle I tried to fish last weekend in OC and it was just too fast to throw an anchor. It was a good excuse to get my boat out and cleaned up however.

I'm trying to get my boat out about every other week. It's really a good idea to keep your boat running all winter. The cylinder walls get coated with oil, new gas moves through the carbs/injectors, and the inside of the boat gets ventilated. I still want to do some drone footage if you're willing. I'd like to use something like that for the opening of my videos.

David Pyle sure. When ever your ready let me know. The weather has been nicer this winter than I anticipated which makes for more flying/filming opportunities.

Any time, Mike. Every year I just keep thinking I want to do a helpful series right before springer season but I didn't have my thoughts organized on how to layout the video. This was impromptu and I think it should be helpful.

David, clean towels is something I always have on my boat, but your vid got me thinking about the towels. Typically I have a 5 gallon bucket in the garage. After the season, I bleach the towels and then wash them with normal washing machine soap. Any thoughts about using different soap? I know that when I archery elk hunt I use the scent away soap for all my cloths. Am I getting carried away with this idea? Thanks
@DavidPyle
@DavidPyle 6 жыл бұрын
Chad, I'm a big fan of keeping everything clean. The absence of foreign scent on your gear MAY help you catch more fish but it's a hard thing to prove. I believe that it's worth making the effort so, no I don't think you're getting carried away. It's probably a good idea to use unscented laundry soap on your fishing rags.

Dave, It's good to be back and I'm just counting the days for springers. I have some ideas for a few pre-season videos but you wouldn't believe how challenging it is to sit down and tell it to the camera.

As someone who drives a couple hours to hit the channel for springers, and having only one fish under my belt so far (seen two others caught on my boat on different days), more tips and tricks are a welcome sight! My first and only springer was the only fish caught that day (7 hours on the river out of Sauvie) and I had just convinced my dad to let me put a triangle flasher on one of our three rods. I'd love to hear more about how you choose colors and styles of flashers. My dad and I have gone from two chartreuse triangles to three colors of triangles and 5 colors of pro trolls after just this past fall season (particularly a 4 fish weekend with pro trolls.) I want to understand more! Thanks for the videos!

Nathan, the general idea is just what I said in the video. It's important to determine when to "bounce the bottom" and when to fish "suspended". In shallow water with moving current (12-35 feet), you want to keep your gear one crank off the bottom and a triangle is the tool. In deep water (45+ feet), you are generally fishing suspended with your gear down 15-25 feet (there are exceptions as we've fished on the bottom at 45 feet in the Columbia river at times). This is spring chinook fishing I'm talking about, not fall chinook. When the fall chinook are in I'll talk about best practices. Stay tuned and I'll try to get some more videos out.

Hey wondering where you went. Great tips. I think keeping your gear clean is great advice and one of the things I am terrible at. I have noticed that new gear tends to get hit a little better than dirty gear but seems like whatever plug gets hit will keep getting hit the rest of the day. Going to do a better job of keeping my gear clean this year. I have not been out fishing since early December and am getting the bug. We don't have springers, or can't fish for them at least. Might either throw the downriggers on for some trout or head down towards the bay and chase sturgeon. We get a good shad run April-May. One of my favorite things to fish for. Just lots of fun. I know you have a good run on the Columbia too.

Thank you, Steve. I've just dabbled in a little trout, steelhead, and sturgeon fishing this winter. Last year we had high water and the fish were late so it was early April when we boated the first. I'm at the mercy of the muddy Willamette until the turbidity drops and water temp increases. I'm out there early every year tuning up and when the fish come in I'm dialed in. Have fun with trout and sturgeon. Any fishing is good fishing.

I had a guide tell me to wash everything. Lures, leaders etc. he even said to wash your line on the reel. Little Lemon Joy and run water on it to remove any bad smells. Didn't think of the lead weights. That makes sense because they start to smell and have a coating on them as a while sitting in the boat. I have them in separate open containers.

Brandon, Thank you for the comment and I'm happy it might be useful. Glen's website is www.FishNSleep.net. I think he's got a really good idea. He also has a blog of the latest fishing news and I've been checking it every couple of days. He gets the news out very timely and it's all in one place. I think you hit the "Product" link to find the boxes.

Hello sir! What rods are you using this year to pull your herring? I remember at one point you mentioned that you were happy with the Shimano Clarus. Is that still the case? Thanks for the info and have a great season!
@DavidPyle
@DavidPyle 6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, Shimano has discontinued the Heavy Clarus line so I'm not able to buy them anymore. You can spend a lot of money on rods and it seems to me that there's a price/performance curve where you're not really going to see any more fish caught but you're paying a lot more money. I just try to find a happy medium.

David, your killing me.... You just gave away ALL of my SECRETS, now I have NO advantage over the other SPRINGER crowd... I see there is (1) DISLIKE. I'm not sure but, could it be DIRK??? This is the second time in a row that you have left him out. I could be WRONG, but I understand that Dirk wants to invite you over for dinner, Yep LIVER - N - ONIONS. sounds delicious. Hahahaha.. Tight lines my friend. ;-)

Paul,I have a feeling that you've got some secrets up your sleeves and won't have any more trouble that the rest of us finding springers. If we EVERYTHING right, it's still a lucky day when we catch a springer. I can't wait to get started. I think Dirk may have gone to Mexico this winter and he's waiting for the Springers to arrive before coming back (Haha). If he cooks Liver and Onions for me he's not getting back on the boat.

LOL... David, I'm ready to give up my #1 SECRET for catching SPRINGERS. Spread Peanut Butter on the herring, but it must be the " CHUNKY STYLE " you should always wear gloves, so you can lick the fingers then toss them.. Hahahahaha.. If that really works, I'm gonnna be $RICH$ LOL. Tight lines my friend.

Only in the Willy, but " SKIPPY " is the go to flavor in the Columbia. David, I forgot to BRAG about my Steelhead trip on the Clackamas Thursday. I went out with a guide first name Brian. I actually forgot his last name. I landed (3) one being a native, and (1) broke the line so NOT MY FAULT. and (1) that I did screw-up. That was the most attempts for me ever chasing these iron headed fighters. ;-)
@DavidPyle
@DavidPyle 7 жыл бұрын
Great story and you know I've done my share of screwing up because it's on video. You've got to love the one where I netted Dirks fish and reached over to grab my kicker and the fish jumped out of the net. Good thing it was his fish and not mine. Haha. The Willy turbidity was not bad today so I went to Willamette park and trolled down river for two hours. We certainly had some fish investigating our gear but they decided not to bite the offering. I don't usually catch my first until late March so I'm not terribly disappointed but it was a nice boat ride.

With all that scrubbing, do you still have time to get your line wet? I smoke cigarettes, never scrub'd anything and still catch salmon in the Columbia River....keep scrubbing your lead and tight lines!!
@DavidPyle

If you can entice salmon, especially spring Chinook, without cleaning your gear - more power to you. It's an expensive day to go out and fish the Columbia and there are a limited amount of fish to catch so I'm going to take every precaution to give myself a chance to hook a fish. Keep doing what works for you and I hope you have a very successful salmon season.
