Spring drought is broken at Green Pastures Farm! With 2.4" of rain last night, this was our biggest rain since last August. Creeks are flowing and some of the ponds came up as well. Such a welcome sight after no rain for months.

Wonderful news! I absolutely LOVE the sound (and smell) of rain--so glad you finally got some really good rain. All that grass should do a great job catching it and letting it soak in. And it seems to me that the hay that was cut, but not rolled up, served as a mulch layer to help the grass come back from being harvested.

You got that right! Joel never flinched, he jumped off into that filling hole of water in an instant. Never took off anything, clothes, boots and all went into 4 feet of cold water to save our pond!!! Joel has all the tools to be an outstanding Grazier in the future for sure.

Speaking of paperwork, please do a video on the kinds of records you keep for ranching. Not necessarily accounting stuff, (thats private, I get it), but surely you have a grazing plan, and the records you keep on the cows.

Greg, I know it takes a bit more time but when I'm replacing a valve on a pond etc I use an inflatable plug (often called a test ball or test plug). Just use a little caution when making cuts so you don't cut your hose (and keep a spare hose just in case) and there are no concerns with leaks or incorrect fittings. Sometimes things happen and it's nice knowing you can shut that flow off. When installing the new valve just open it and slide it over the hose. You could use a bicycle pump to inflate the plug.

I just love that you don’t give up. If you could only bottle that, Greg. I am in Maryville. I was thinking of Green Pastures farm yesterday. We needed the rain badly…just not the tornadoes. Grazing with your method prevents washing away of vital nutrients. Our farmlands are farmed with chemicals which cause run off and erosion. It’s just common sense ranching that will save the land. Thanks. Greg. You are always a sign of hope.

Greg, If one of your guys had made a video of "the great pipe flood", it could have received 100,000 views. It would have been a really good revenue generator. Please consider going back to the scene and describing it again. Also, I would like to see how everything you built at the ponds looks after this perfect rain. I'm from Central Texas, east of Austin in the blackland hills. We referred to those rains as "million dollar rains".

i used a 2 inch rubber union that has stainless steel clamps to join the plastic city water to the copper pipe into the house which goes thru 8 inches of concrete wall. I tried 2 previous unions based on plastic and glue and both of them failed after some time. My first clue would be a huge water bill. The union was buried about 3 ft down under the deck stairs on the side of the house. It hasn't leaked for over 20 years since the last repair. I did have to shut off the main valve in the city meter box about 70 ft from the splice location in my basement. I put a lidded utility box over the union to protect it before I back filled the hole. The wooden pipe plug you used is the method that was used in the US Navy to stop severed lines and pipes on ships and subs. Every repair locker has a selection of plugs of various diameters for that use as well as shoring and other equipment to use in the event of a casualty or battle damage. You handled that situation like a champ and lost only a small amount of water but I would get me 10 bags of concrete and pour that hole full and never have to worry about it again. Too bad the dam face is so close to the property line that you can't use gravity to pipe the water so now you will be required to pump it out if you want to use the water at longer distances. Great on the rain and I see you are still raining for the next few hours. Storing that water up in the ponds and good soil will hold a good amount as well.

@@gregjudyregenerativerancheryes it’s been extremely wet all spring with one short break of one week in early April. Lately we’ve had 5 +3+2+ 3 inches in the last week and a half. It’s predicted to rain almost every day for the next 15 days. That’s been the pattern here through early July since 2015 after we came out of a 7 year drought. My sheep are loving the grass though.

We like keeping the rain that falls on our farms by keeping all the ground covered with green plants. There’s fresh ditches 2 feet deep in the crop field down the road from our farm. They ran a 32’ disk across the field, right next to the creek, the whole bank busted off and is now headed toward the Missouri River.😩
