SPRING is well underway and there is plenty to sow, pot on and plant for the kitchen garden. The chickens are in full voice and laying well. Plus it's time to deploy the fly trap as the insect numbers are surging in the garden, and that means the flys as well. The 'conservatory' tomatoes are doing nicely and I have my first tomatoes forming! Can't wait to taste the first one. We don't eat bought out of season tomatoes as the taste is just such a disappointment so the first fresh tomato out of the garden is a treat to look forward to.
I'm trying a new method to start my peas this year. I found a couple of planters on the side of the road (street treasure) and I'm using them to hold toilet rolls that I've filled with compost and sown my pea seeds into. The idea is that they will get a good head start and then be able to go out into the garden with little root disturbance and hopefully better able to defend themselves from the slugs and snails!
We have also started the wicking bed project. We've come up with the design, found the wood from the recycled wood pile and cut it to length. So now we just need some dry weather to coincide with a weekend and we'll get on with the build.
