Hello and welcome to another edition of SUMO PRIME TIME. Thank you so much for tuning in. The wait is finally over as the March Grand Sumo Tournament kicks off this Sunday in Osaka. The competition is often referred to as “the stormy spring tournament” due to its historical tendency to feature numerous twists and turns, often resulting in unexpected upsets. In this episode, we introduce three wrestlers: Wakamotoharu, Asanoyama, and Onosato, who are focused on causing huge upsets and share their motivations for the upcoming meet. Buckle up, everyone, here comes the “stormy” spring meet!

Onosato has a bright-eyed intelligence to him when he talks. I think it's odds on that with his physical attributes being ideal also he will go far if he remains healthy and uninjured. Between him and Atamifuji the sport looks exciting for years to come! Thanks Hiro.

I already liked him a lot, but even more after this interview; what a cool guy!!
There's something about Wakamotoharu that I've always liked. Im still gonna root for my usual favorites during the upcoming tournament but im also gonna pay attention to WMH. I hope he makes it to ozeki eventually
@marthab41726 ай бұрын
Yes I hope he does, he's an excellent rikishi! 😊😊

I have no doubt that he will make it to Ozeki.
@Molders326 ай бұрын
Asanoyama is going to have a hugely tough first week at M1w, likely facing all four ozeki and the yokozuna straight off the bat. His best chance might be against Takakeisho on day 1 who could well be ring-rusty and down on power for his oshi-sumo attack. It's 6-5 lifetime between these guys and we know that if Takakeisho doesn't win his matches quick then he likely doesn't win at all.

Is there any reason Onosato doesn't have a top knot?
@AFurreh6 ай бұрын
You'll see this from young guys who have meteoric rises in to Makuuchi (like Hakuoho) where when they start professional sumo they have short hair and it hasn't had time to grow out long enough for a topknot to be possible yet. In a few tournaments you'll see him sporting it.
@LauraJdogmom6 ай бұрын
@@AFurreh The first topknot is such a big occasion, even though it's usually small. Hakuoho will be sporting his first topknot for this basho. It will be months before he'll have an oichomage, though.

I think kotonowaka can rack up the wins but maybe not the championship unless terunofuji is out of the tournament - only then I find that it gets more exciting. I'm on the bench with Kirishima
@PhillipCalvin6276 ай бұрын
He seemed pretty awed by the Yokozuna in January. Hopefully he can shake that and he'll be a serious threat to Terunofuji's push for 10.
@TheZiggyman016 ай бұрын
Ozeki looks very hard to get through. Terunofuji was like a bullet train that stopped briefly at ozeki station and went on to yokozuna.
@PhillipCalvin6276 ай бұрын
@@TheZiggyman01 Teru is special though. When Terunofuji came back from injury, I think he was just on another level from the other rikishi. He knew how to impose his brand of Sumo with the limitations of his body and really utilize his size and strength. Sometimes I don't really like it, like clamping down on the elbows and using his height to control his opponent or simply carrying them out of the ring when they give him trouble... But it works. 😂 Ozeki wasn't enough for Teru in this era when he returned. Mentally I think he was already beyond that, he knew what he wanted and I think he really believed he could obtain it. Asanoyama for instance shows a lot of signs that he can get back to Ozeki, but there are questions if he can go further still assuming he makes it back to Ozeki. I think a lot of it is in his head. Maybe the whole ordeal had an effect of his belief or his will power. Terunofuji already had the mindset of a wrestler who destined for Yokozuna and imposingly Hakuho was the only one in his way as was demonstrated with his last 15-0. Probably the most brutal passing of the torch I've seen. I guess what I'm trying to say is Yokozuna is more than just a title, it's like they've ascended in a way above other rikishi in their mindset and their Sumo and Terunofuji had it. Other Ozeki might never get it... Like Takakeisho. He's been at the cusp for a long time now but that light switch never flipped over and now the limitations of him body have caught up with him and I'm not sure he is able to overcome them. Ultimately I think Kotonowaka has the ability to become that guy but he just isn't there yet. Kirishima might be pretty close as well, but neither of them have that it factor that Terunofuji has or Hakuho had. At least not yet. Sorry for rambling. 😂
@TheZiggyman016 ай бұрын
it's ok, no need to be sorry about it. I think if you can make it to sekiwake or better still ozeki while you're still very young then they're on the right track but with age comes experience so it's a balance with support from the right stable master. So far we've got some very interesting wrestlers in ozeki. Lets see how it goes in this tournament. 👍

Thank you for the content, Mr Morita. Sumo is a noble sport and you do a great job of bringing us that side of the sport. Unfortunately it has an ugly side. An ugly side of being managed by hypocritical and cowardly bureaucrats that care more about their high school style cliques than the sport, it seems.

Ничего хуже, чем возможное закрытие школы Миягино и отставки Хакухо для депопуляризации сумо за пределами Японии сделать, пожалуй невозможно.

I'll pick Kotoshoho as a dark horse. He seems to have hit his stride, and he's unlikely to face any rikishi higher than upper maegashira no matter how well he does.
