Let's take a deep dive into the world of swimbaits! We're covering everything from where big bass position in Spring, to which baits are worth the investment. Swimbait fishing doesn't have to be tough! After today you'll be able to fish with confidence in pursuit of your new personal best!
On the surface, swimbait fishing seems incredibly intimidating. From the size of the baits, to the insane price tags, its easy to be caught up in it. In reality, swimbaits are one of the easiest lures to use, You can easily catch the biggest bass of your life using one. Listen closely as Matt explains how different fisheries respond better to different lures so you know you're throwing the right baits in the right places this Spring.
Below you'll find links to the exact baits Matt discussed in the video. We've also included links to some of our favorite swimbait rods and reels. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Thats one of the main things I admire about you and Tim, in addition to the MANY MANY other great things you guys teach, you also teach RESPNOSIBLE fishing. I HATE seeing a fish killed whether by accident or intentional. Im not some PETA nut or anything like that but I LOVE fishing and if we dont take care of these fish NOW, then our kids and grandkids wont get to experience the joy of catching a fish of a lifetime like our generation has. Obviously, its going to happen. Sometimes your going to gut hook a fish or hook their gills and when that happens we do the best we can to help that fish and what will be, will be. But at the same time if we all do our part to fish responsibly and pass those habits down to our kids and grandkids then hopefully those big ones and their genetics will continue to thrive in the future. Thanks for all you guys do for this sport. If only there were more like you.

I wish you would do a vid to show anglers how to properly hold a big bass by supporting it with 2 hands instead of vertically with one hand where it tears their jaw ligaments and they can’t eat. The Texas Share a Lunker program has lost a lot of 13 plus pounders for this exact reason. I even see pros cranking their jaws holding them horizontally with one hand instead of two. Also letting them flop around on boat carpet or on the bank removes their protective slime and they get a infection. A lot of newbies don’t know better and you guys have a lot of viewers.

Man, what a great video! I love the swimbait ones. I don’t throw surface anymore after an incident with an Osprey(the raptor, not the lure) flying away with a Huddleston! I played him like a kite for about 30 seconds before he hit the water, with the line tangled around his feet/legs, then it took another 5 mins to get him to the boat and it got REAL interesting. I was finally able to get him free of my line avoiding those talons and beak and he flew away with a huge applause from the boats that had gathered for the show. 🤣. So the baits obviously look real but I fish where Eagles and Osprey are common so I don’t mess with surface now. Thanks again Matt. Great stuff

More people in the world today need to be as compassionate as you my friend. I commend you for sacrificing your chance to have a good time fishing topwater for the sake of the predatory birds. I had a goose once swim over and eat my spook off the surface in a pond once and I tried reeling it in really fast to get it away from the goose but that thing was crazy fast and just ran it down more and seconds later I was fighting a flying goose on my medium action topwater rod. I felt terrible and was able to get the goose subdued and get the hook out of it but I still throw topwater I’m just a little more careful now but thank you for being a compassionate human being. If we all just had this amount of compassion.🤔

@@shawndulany4287 - Thank you Shawn. A goose on top water?! That’s not something you hear of every day. With the Osprey, It was dicey by the boat with an angry/scared Osprey but I was very glad he flew away unscathed. Not to mention the big bonus of getting my $30 lure back. 🤣. Have an amazing day

"From: Kiki: Unknown 7/21/21 Comments: Just back from test driving my Okuma Citrix 364 baitcast reel... paired with an 8' irod heavy swimbait rod. Wow! I am very impressed! This real casts a 10' 6oz Savage Gear line through Trout with ease! After dialing in the reel for such a large bait, I was consistently casting it 40+ yards! Great big bait real for the price! Let's just see how she holds up over the next few months... 2nd review coming."

Thanks for adding the fish care part of the video because now with all the people fishing and enjoying time on the water and the new advances in sonar technology there are a lot more encounters with these giant fish and it’s never been more important than now to get those fish back healthy. Before panoptics those fish weren’t getting bothered that much but people are starting to tap into those big fish environments whereas before it was way harder to find and target those fish. I have panoptics and use it a lot so not against that just think like you and want those fish to be here for years to come and produce more like them.👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥Been a huge fan of the channel for years and love the content you guys produce. I have learned so much from you and Tim over the years and it’s so much appreciated. Keep it up guys!!!

This is the best balanced video I think you've done. You covered each aspect of it very well including the lures in illogical categories, the different techniques and the equipment. Excellent job. You even played on my sympathies as I watched you get colder and colder earlier in the day. .. As an idea for Northern fishermen, we have lite musky gear and lures that I think would fit the situation. It's true we fishing mainly for Smallmouths so this may not be appropriate but the rods, lines and reels may apply in more Southern climates without having to buy another specialized outfit.

Matt, couple of questions: 1. shallow water: what depths are you talking about? can you give ranges? 2. swimbaits in highland lakes (for big spots): any 'adjustments' that you would recommend? some real monsters here for sure (florida genetics), but it's not all about just the largemouth. some other bass species about that when a guy gets tired of rubbing elbows and wants some 'alone' time... can be found.

i always watch your yearly swimbait guide videos. they generally are the same with updated stuff but its always a nice watch. the only thing youve never talked about tho are Carp eaters. alot of lakes in the country that dont have trout like fish will have common carp, grass carp and buffalo. all 3 when they are babies are around the same size as the trout and bass will gobble them up all the same. in my local ponds they are full of grass and common carp. i fish my jig hooked baits on bottom year round to imitate the feeding carp and boy does it work

Narrowed it down to 3, Hummingbird SI+, Lowrance HDS live, and Lowrance elite fs9, which is best in your opinion and why? Not looking to go all in with live imaging yet but maybe later on. Free info for you swimbaiters. I fish the Smashtech Convict; 7 inch weedless swimbait. Instead of a screw lock, I take a think bolt and cut off the head; I hammer one end flat and drill a hole for an 0 ring. I attach the 0 ring to my hook and push the bolt through the nose and into the hook slot cavity. Then I put on a rubber washer and small nut and that’s it. That bait goes from 1-5 fish per bait; to over 100 bass per bait on average. Best weedless rigging system out there.

Needed this video. A lot of these baits are to big for the north though(I’m saying this cause I’m in mn). Could you possibly make a spin-off Version for the northern states. Awesome video though, I learned so much.

First time I’ve commented after watching basically all of your videos over the years. It is great that you are talking about taking care of the bass and catching and release. This should be discussed more. There’s no reason to be keeping large bass. Thank you.

Well Matt I finally got my first 966 with a tranx 301 hg with 80lb maxcautro to the 30 sunline shockleader and I have to say I love this set up. Plus this is my very first gloomis rod. I plan on getting more Loomis rods in the future. Love the feel that they have. They're so nice. Well worth the money. Thanks for the recommendation

I think one thing most beginners to swimbait fishing do is over complicate it lol just pick 2 or 3 soft baits and 2 or 3 hard baits that you think mimic the forage around you and fish the hell out of them!

I absolutely love dobyns and almost exclusively have them for my line up. When you talk about different rods for different hook baits, the Fury 806H, is that more of a treble or jig hook bait? Thanks Matt/Tim, this is the best bass fishing teaching channel on KZbin, without a doubt!
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 2 жыл бұрын

@@tacticalbassin do you happen to remember the Okuma guide select 7’6” extra heavy? It’s the older model…Is that more of a treble or jig hook bait?
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 2 жыл бұрын
That was also a Treble hook rod. That particular rod had a reputation for losing giants on jig hooks UNLESS you added a stinger. With a stinger Treble you're good to go with the Okuma.

Thanks for good tips as usual. & Most important thing is thank you for promoting releasing these big bass back into water they came from. It takes a long time for a female to get that big & everyone that's taken out of the water permanently is stealing those good genes from going back into future population!!! We need keep all big bass in our waters if we wanna have them in future! Plus the replicas are really good now too. I always release bass I catch reguardless of size. Theres better tasting fish to eat... their just fun to find & catch! My pb is only 7.9 so I have yet to do a replica mount. I'm trying for a double digit this season. Then I'll probably do a replica. Thanks again

I'd love if one of you guys could chime in and answer this question, because I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking it. These videos are generally meant for those in the south. So what about us up North guys? I'm in Minnesota, but I'm sure anyone this north is probably thinking "if right now is YOUR time to throw the swimbaits for big ones, when is OUR time?" Is it the second the ice leaves the lake? Thanks for the amazing content as always!
@tacticalbassin
@tacticalbassin 2 жыл бұрын
These are meant for everyone 👍🏼 In fact one of the catches in the video was just miles from the Canadian border. Start ASAP because your prespawn is incredibly short, continue until a full moon phase after the spawn ends.

If someone is looking for a reel for swimbaits and either they are too much money or they are sold out piscifun sales a reel that has 30lbs of drag. Comes with a power handle or standard. It’s smooth as butter. Best part is it’s less than 100$! I love mine. Got it on sale for like 70. You can absolutely yank on them and it holds up.
