Very informative yet again. When you consider the amount of top growth and how far advanced it was I would have hesitated to do that much work but the end result is just superb it looks like a totally different tree!! Look forward to you showing the update and how much back budding has been produced!!! Thank you.

I thought the same thing. I was thinking, "Naw, looks pretty good," but the end result totally showed how much excessive growth needed to be pruned away. Great video.

Awesome video Colin 👏🏽 You're the best..the detailed explanation of what/why/where you Prune(thinking of the future of the Tree).. That sort of insight, I'm sure is helping many viewers🏆 Small question.. I stumbled onto a THICK Trunk Japanese Holly a few months back at a Nursery...it was hidden behind other trees, & only $12 so I had to Grab it😅 A hidden Gem.. Ive already chopped the Trunk back, to emphasize the Movement in the Trunk.. Spring is arriving now.. Any tips? as far as the species, & growing its maximum potential? This is my 1st Holly.. I'm in Florida(USA), so, a Warm Climate.. ... keep up the GOOD work.. You're channel is the BEST & I even get to hear some Bob Marley from time to time also🎵 😆

First time I saw this technique of for potting a Japanese maple that woke up from dormant. I wanted to see the results after because it's very risky but I got the point that you need to hard pruning to reset back in time from being dormant inorder to repot it.

Hi Corin, I watch all your videos. Although I'm certain this tree will be successful, I just can't help but to assume there's perhaps some sort of risk/disadvantage to doing a prune (in essence a defoliation) to a deciduous tree at that stage of spring. I always felt if I didn't prune before bud swell even, that I was too late. I can only assume there is no risk/disadvantage to this because you confidently execute it. Keep the videos coming.
@andreasweber1533
@andreasweber1533 2 жыл бұрын
Don't forget to consider the development stage of the tree, and consequently your goal for the new growth after the prune. The tree has used stored energy to put out this first flush of growth and hasn't got anything significant back from the leaves. So the next flush will be more subdued, less vigorous (edit: especially combined with the root pruning). On such a refined tree that's not a bad thing, you wouldn't want exuberant shoots. If you're in early development, wanting to bulk up the trunk, grow a lot of foliage etc you might want to wait until the leaves have matured and somewhat replenished the nutrients spent on their growth.

Great video corin question if I may. I’ve just collected a maple from a garden I’ve cut the top off so it’s back to a stump all but one branch will it grow new branches faster if I put it in greenhouse ?

Hey Corin, are you potting in only Akedama?…I’ve been in Bonsai for going on my 4th season here in the Eastern U.S. and I’ve been curious if in my temperate area whether or not I could get away with just using straight up Akedama for my Deciduous and Conifers and Kanuma for my Satsukis…some input would be great please

What does placing the tree in an unheated greenhouse do ?

@@greenwoodbonsaistudio if it's an unheated greenhouse, surely it's going to be cold anyway, overnight anyway.

yes but, its a hard outdoor tree, so a little old won't affect it, just a warmer average temp will benefit it the tree short term.

Hi Corin, really appreciate this video. Last year late in the season I did an air layer on a Shishi Gashira and let it go the winter still attached to the tree. I live in central valley California and the leaves are starting to pop. Is now a good time to separate the air layer from the tree?

@@Hunterk_10 you also dont necessarilly need to wait until next season to detach the air layerings. I'm In southern NY and I start my air layerings in may and detach mid-end of july, let the roots grow in august-september, and then store in my garage to protect from frost

Pruning that late when leaves are already open feels very risky. It’s like a late frost that burn all the leaves.

As I mention in the video, ideally it would have been done a few days earlier. Is it, in fact the act of trimming back like this that allows the re-potting procedure a little later than usual.
