In the 1990's Springbank released some of the best epic whiskies ever bottled. This dark vatting of the 12 year 100 proof is reduced to 50% ABV by adding 35+ year old Whisky instead of water.

Absolutely unbelievable. I enjoy watching you guys taste these unicorns so much. For some of these special bottlings, I’ve heard you say in videos that you’ll only have one or two drams a year. I’d be interested in knowing your thoughts on inert gas to preserve the integrity of the spirit. Is it something you use? (I’ve heard others give high praise to Private Preserve Wine Preserver..) many thanks!

Great review! Springbank is still great, but those where the days! My favorite, Springbank 21-year-old Hedley G Wright!

They def were something else. The old dumpy 21s are amazing too

Huge Springbank fan here as well. One of my favorite all time bottlings is an SMWS 27.112 which is a first fill Oloroso for 21 years. Just nothing touches these bottles for the combination of complexity and refinement. Would have to scout out the auctions to snag some of these older ones, although price is just getting insane right now.

For sure!! Unfortunately Springbank now has that big name and collectors have gotten involved.

It's a good video. I have a question! What is the difference between a dark version and a double dark version, and what can you tell from the dark version and the dark version? For example, is there a difference in whiskey color, production year, and label?

Love that technical and artisan/enjoyment score. Like figure skating. You guys have a running list of bottles and ratings? You’re my whiskybase.

Thanks Darrin, its important to analyze in both ways. Actually Maltmoment has a spreadsheet with all of our scores from our reviews. I need to learn how to share it on the page. Will look into it again

Great guys. Perfect timing too and great notes. I opened this bottle at a neighbors last weekend to decant it for an intimate tasting we're having the end of June along with other epic bottles. Couple spots open if interested in joining us in Charlotte. We're limiting it to about 7 people and have a spot or two open. Kind of a weekend tasting. Includes a 1951 Glen Cawdor 32yo, 66 Springer local barley 30yo, 68 Bowmore 40yo, Rare Malts 72 Brora 22yo, 70s Port Ellens and more. Just need to bring some bottles that would pair well with the others. Good reason to come to Charlotte.

You guys will have an epic tasting for sure!!! Don't think we can make it to Charlotte but I've been fortunate to try most of these and know you will be in malt paradise. Cheers Bud!!

How much does bottle aging enter into this one's greatness? Would it have tasted as good when it was first released, do you think?
@maltreviews Жыл бұрын

I honestly think the closest thing that replicates this exact bottle. Is he tall 21yr, 1998 superdark version. I would reckon they sourced from exact same style casks

I always wonder how it compares to that 57 % version i have tried several times & rated at the max (my rating scale is different & higher than the majority of reviewers, I explain it in my website), i suppose that if I try that one i shall temper my rating, lol, as everything is relative...One thing is sure, those old 1960s & 1970s which were used to down the abv a bit had to be more important here in terms of quantity, right ? I hope to be able to try it some day...Your notes makes me think of the Local Barley SC 507 Vintage 1966 (bottled at 55 % abv) I tried, but even more sherried...so a kinda mix with other great old malts & yeah other spirits from my country a bit too...I tried some very old Cognacs but only a few made me think a bit of Springbank, to be honest...but rancio wise there are obviously some connections. Cheers & Enjoy !

The 57% is also incredible but this one tastes older and is more sherried so you have to like that. Very old school style!! Many of those older local barleys are incredible as you know of course. Cheers Greg!!

Would they not say that this is at Cask Strength? Assuming all the casks involved in the vatting are at Cask Strength. Regardless, legendary. I have a sample of this specific one. Need to get a whole bottle. The prices are getting stranger by the month. Given your description, I suggest doing a head to head with the St. Magdalene 19 just to compare the “density” of flavors and the concentrated flavors you keep raving about. I rated that 96 points.

the rare malts St. Mag?
@soumyasanyal95882 жыл бұрын
@@boingmaster Yep.
@maltreviews2 жыл бұрын
Well it is not confirmed by springbank that they used 35 year old whiskies to bring the abv down but that is the truth and it was done a lot back then. The St mag is an excellent whisky as well
