When she speaks Spanish I feel a wave of masculine emotions throughout my body. When she switches to English those emotions shrink down and be replaced with horror warning me of feminism.

As a Spanish learner and few other languages I realized the toughest thing to do is attaching the spoken and listened sounds with emotions. To me this is the secret of language as a sound, it is attached to our emotions and when we are fluent it flows expressing those feelings.

I'm very confused by, "Ojalá te hubieran dejado cuadrarlo a ti." This is translated as, "I wish they would have let you be the one to arrange it." but I can't find any definition of "cuadrar" that is even close to meaning "arrange". I asked a few Spanish speakers about this and they were confused as well and thought that it was probably a mistake in translation. Help!
@garrymontgomery2033
@garrymontgomery2033 2 жыл бұрын
"cuadrar" means to "square off"/ "to tally" and, as with a lot of Spanish verbs, we have to make a big jump for it to make sense in English. Some regions may not use it much whereas in others it's common.

Increasingly, "if I was" is replacing "if I were" as in English as the subjunctive form is falling into disuse. The subjunctivity can be conveyed by word order alone.

@heronimousbrapson863
@heronimousbrapson863 2 жыл бұрын
This is another reason why Spanish is so difficult for English speakers to learn. The subjunctive is easier to form in English than in Spanish and increasingly, it is hardly used at all. Word order dependent languages can function quite well without it.

Nope. I won't forget about using the subjunctive when saying Ojala simply because Spanish grammar absolutely requires it. Ojala expresses something which can be contrary to reality, which of course requires the subjunctive. Let's make an example with the word arrive - Llegar. Example: Ojala que mi amigo llegue a tiempo. I hope my friend arrives on time.

Maura is improving slightly with speaking in Spanish SLOWER in her videos so non-native speakers can keep up with her but it would still help if she slowed down just A LOT more. For a non-native speaker, I would have to slow down the video to 50% the normal speed just to understand Maura when she speaks her normal speed Spanish, which is still way too fast.
@MauraSpringSpanish

Hi Dennis! As always, we'll take this into account! But do know that I'm not speaking in "normal" speed in any video, haha. =)
@criticalthinker6011

These videos are watched by all levels of students from beginner to advanced so I think it would be a disservice for Maura to speak slowly. That's not going to help you in the real world. I like your idea of adjusting the speed to fit your current level. Eventually, you'll increase the speed as you advance in your studies. A good exercise for advanced students is to listen to the video at 1.5x a few times and then listen to it at regular speed and it will sound SOOOO slow!
