In this video you can learn a little about springtails. The footage I captured was of several globular springtails in their natural environment, with a few clips taken in a more controlled setup with more optimal lighting.

So nice when a KZbinr accommodates my latest obsession. LOL! With the cold rapidly approaching here in Wisconsin, I've been searching for ideas of what to shoot when the bugs are gone. I found out these are around during the winter and have been reading up on them. Haven't had a chance to get out and look, yet, but I'm excited to try. Thanks for the video. I'm amazed at how well you kept focus on such a tiny critter.

I’ve spent a lot of time down on the ground looking at the tiny things… seen many springtails… never seen one ☝️ of these globular ones tho! I’d definitely have confused it for an insect, long legs with hair, long hairy antennae, obvious visible eyes…

Hey great video! I have all my plants in mineral substrate and i noticed that for some months now some really tiny black bugs were crawling around. I managed to capture them with my microscope and found out online they might be globular springtails. My plants don't seem to have any problem, on the contrary theyre thriving! Have u ever seen something similar and do you maybe know if they are beneficial mites or are bad for the plants?? Thank you 😊
@peterviragphoto
@peterviragphoto 11 ай бұрын
Hi there Cathy. Thanks for watching. They are generally beneficial for plants because they help brake down organic matter in the soil and therefore allow more nutrients to be absorbed by plants. We have plenty of springtails in our backyard in the colder months, I mainly find them on our fig leaves. Check out this cinematic video I took of some here if interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXbMi6aoqbt5oqssi=qJ8TZCrKGn1tUVni Cheers:)

@peterviragphoto thank you so much for your answer. The thing is I don't have my plants in soil but in mineral substrate (a mixture of lava rock, pumice and zeolite) so I think they might be go around 'eating' algae or similar stuff that grow around the little stones and they usually cone around when there's more humidity for example when i water my plants. I just hope they're not harmful and they don't spread in the house😅

They are harmless to humans as well but keep monitoring their population. Some can feed on the roots & leaves of seedlings.
