My favorite hexapods!! They’re incredibly underrated in the field entomology, to the extent that none of my professors know an entomologist who studies them. They’re known to be the most abundant animal on the planet, yet still so under appreciated. I love them!

While moving, underneath one of my large plant saucers, I found a colony of springtails. So I used a small hand vacuum to collect them, then emptied the contents into a container I had prepared with activated chemical free charcoal. I now have a little home grown colony of springtails that I sprinkle into my house plants. They are great at eating mold/fungus. I loved seeing them up close in this video! I find them very endearing.

Not a great idea to bring those inside the house. They increase in number rapidly and are pests that should not be inside the house.
@Weiner-Worm Жыл бұрын
@@Jannellbathbabe Do you have a source for your claim? I have never seen any outside the plant containers. They need moisture to live, and cannot survive in carpet or on hard floor. They eat the fungus growing in my plants, and that lowers the spore count
@Jannellbathbabe Жыл бұрын
@@Weiner-Worm my own personal experience lol can probably search online as well. Here where we’ve had an extremely unusual high amount of rain has caused them to swarm many properties. Once they get inside the house they migrate to bathrooms eventually because of the moisture. Even when I called pest control companies they stated that’s they’re most common concern from home owners in the area. I noticed them in my planters too so technician put chemicals in all my pots and thankfully they’re all gone
@theworthysoulКүн бұрын
I did this with a few I caught in the drained water from new houseplants! I started with approx 5 dark globular ones, approx 8 dark slender, almost worm-like ones and a couple of lighter, shiny slender insectoid ones. Wasn’t as much a culture I guess, considering I had multiple species plus some grain mites that got in mysteriously. But they live in a takeaway tub on a mix of houseplant potting mixes, and a diet of baker’s yeast. They’ve bred like *CRAZY.* The globular ones have surprisingly gone all out and since they love to climb, the lid is coated in hundreds of them. The dark slender ones are less easy to see but sometimes like to wander on the walls and have clearly bred too. The lighter ones spend most of their time in the soil but have also seemingly bred despite my poor start with only 2 individuals! It’s very satisfying to watch them multiply and devour the yeast, though sometimes annoying to open the tub as the globular ones like to try to leave 😅
