Abingdon on Thames UK. An autumnal walk through the garden today. Leaves are starting to change colour. No open day this year due to the pandemic so once again I’ve left the garden to do its own thing.

I first saw your garden on youtube 3 years ago, and it instigated a 3-year long 'rabbit hole' of interest in hardy tropical gardens. If you ever find the time to do a plant list/video it would be so so appreciated.

Still the best garden on YT. Thank you so much for the update, things have filled in that much more this year. Many of us have the same plants as you, but your sense of design is unparalleled. Thanks again for all the inspiration.

I remember from a silent tour that you did a year or two ago and there was too much understory, it was a bit claustrophobic. But, I love love love how certain areas you have opened up and now the form of the woody plants, especially the Tetrapanax, are really showing through, but you still have those areas that are lush. And even though you have a smaller garden as far as square footage goes, it’s incredible because there are so many vignettes that are scattered throughout the garden with such purpose. I’m sure you’ve learned a ton throughout these couple years that you’ve been gardening too. Just incredible.

Hi Captain, due to work commitments I have hardly been in the garden this year so there won’t be a video. Hoping to be back out there a lot more next year. It has given me time to change a couple of areas that weren’t working. I also lost one or two plants during last year’s harsh winter so need to replant a couple of areas.

Looks lovely, certainly one of the best domestic tropical themed gardens in the UK on KZbin. I think it's difficult to get the composition this good, not simply having the correct plants. Some plant questions if you don't mind... 00:26 - Is that a Brugmansia to the left behind the patio? 00:34 - What is the low plant with rounded veined leaves to the right of the chair? 01:13 - Princeps or hybrid on the right? 01:48 - What's the low, white speckled ground cover in the centre in front of the Mahonia? 11:57 - Is that a pittosporum bottom centre? General Q's... How many years have you had the Tetrapanax's near the patio? Did you have your tall Trachycarpus's from small or did you plant taller trees? Thank you!
@Springyfeller2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Richard 🙏 The Tetrapanax was planted out in 2010 and was about a foot tall at that time. Most of the Trachycarpus were small plants but I did add 3 taller specimens at a later date. The Trachycarpus that were planted as small plants grow a lot quicker than the ones planted as specimens so my advice would be to save your money and buy smaller palms if you can wait for them to grow. To answer your other questions: 1.Yes a Brugmansia that was given to me labelled as ‘Apricot’ 2. Plectranthus purpuratus 3. Just a normal princeps 4. Tradescantia fluminensis ’Maidens blush’ 5. A Sedum but I’m not sure of the variety of it as it was given to me as a cutting. 👍

@@Springyfeller Hello, thank you for taking the time to write this reply and happy Christmas. I'll be investigating some of these and see if I have a place for them.

@@Springyfeller hi have you tried Washingtonia Robusta at all? If so have you had any luck? I know they aren't the most cold Hardy palms got 2 5ft+ washys out the back currently in cages packed with straw lol. They're 1st winter so got everything crossed any advice you could give would be great thanks 👍
@Springyfeller2 жыл бұрын
@@stephenkeeble6857 Hi Stephen, yes I used to have a couple of Washingtonia in the garden but gave up with them in the end. If you wrap them for too long they can rot due to trapped moisture. I would uncover them during mild weather. Most of the palms I grow now as pretty hardy. The most tender palm I grow is Phoenix canariensis but even that has seen a few winters at -8c without any damage. It’s getting quite big now so can recover from any leaf scorch quickly. I’ve probably got over 20 different varieties of hardy palms growing in the garden at the moment. I’m now trying to grow hardier exotics so that I have to do minimal protection in winter. So far this winter the only protection I’ve done is put a ball of fleece in the crowns of my tree ferns and that’s it! 👍
@stephenkeeble68572 жыл бұрын
@@Springyfeller excellent mate find that as well some of the more cold tender palms have had the spear pulled on them after snow/ minus temps. I've also got a cidp out the back delivered a week ago problem I've got is its nearly 6ft tall but rooted in a rather small nursery pot, even had to stake round the base of the pot to stop it toppling as top heavy! Bit worried about repotting it tho as we're still technically in winter, what do you think? Thanks for your reply really helpful 👍
