Yeah, I just remember even watching the attact screen... as the maze would change, and the cars had to switch mid-stream to get back on the new track layout.

Very enjoyable. I never even played it just used to watch the attract mode and play with the wheel. I was about 9 yo though :) Also it's funny about the font like you say. For me that was the hallmark of a 'proper' game but I didn't know it all started here.

Hah! Same here... used to watch the attract mode, but was too young to have any money. And yeah... "Arcade Font" - crazy how that became a hallmark of a decent game. Subtle yet powerful.

Are these cars drifting? Wonder what the criteria was for the tires to screech? Trying to write a race car game :) Thanks!

Think its just a function of going fast enough to "strain" the wheels. No drift. But when you're going slow, no screeching at all... going fast and making a sharp turn = screech

​​@@vghchannel I was an 8th grader in 1977, so it was optimum game for me, especially at that age. You know I got an aneurysm in my hand in 1982 and no one knows what caused it? This game? To this day I can't drive a stick because I can't pawn the steering wheel in an automobile on a downshifting right turn.

@@BrentAlanBeck - nah, I doubt the game would cause it.. more just an unfortunate biological deal. Sorry to hear about that.

How do you play this today?

Very poorly. lol. So, you can play it via MAME emulation. But you have to use some kind of analog input -- like a mouse. Ideally you could hookup an analog wheel to your computer and get it dialed in... but I don't have one of those currently.
