It was a huge win for Lotte Kopecky today! Not too many riders can challenge the dominance of Annemiek van Vleuten these days, but Lotte dug deep and did a fantastic job of getting the inside line into that last right hand bend and outmaneuvering Annemeik like that. It was a lot of fun to watch!

I feel like Annemiek van Vleuten went too early, should've placed her attack in that steep street instead of the street before, because at the end, she didn't have the juice anymore to completely drop Kopecky and she was able to just hang on.

Why is the women's race that much shorter than the men's? Has it got something to do with the races being on the same day, so it's just not possible from an organizational standpoint? Thx!
@ibenrom2 жыл бұрын
I think it’s just because they’re women. In general not as strong as men with also lower average speeds which would result in way too long races
@Wastl9692 жыл бұрын
@@ibenrom 'way too long' is a bit of a stretch. Given that the average speed today was 34 vs 39 kph, that's not that much of a difference. I admit, one could argue the women's average would be lower over the full 185km and 3000m of climbing. But that's beside the point. Marathons aren't shorter for women.
@luke75612 жыл бұрын
@@Wastl969 Fair point, so why do you think the reason is then?
@kyle_c9362 жыл бұрын
@@Wastl969 You're right, in fact women ultimately can have more endurance than men - riders like Fiona Kolbinger, Lael Wilcox and Leah Goldstein (you can look them up) have won ultra-endurance cycle races outright against the men, so it's not that. And I think the time today, from your stats, would have been less than an hour longer, even allowing for the average speed being slower over the longer distance, so it's not that either. Currently the UCI limits women's road races to 160 km, although a couple years ago Lizzy Banks won an epic stage of the Giro Rosa (now Giro Donne), the women's Giro d'Italia, that stretched to 170 km (up a killer of a last climb, too - far, far longer than at Strade Bianche!) but the organisers were censured for it by the UCI - here's the finish: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5uXgoOGpLSIbck I think the reason is that until recently there hasn't really been the strength in depth in the women's peloton to support longer distances - there's a higher spread of abilities simply because there aren't the earnings to let a lot of the women train as full time well (enough) paid professionals would. For example, Annemiek van Vleuten has been going to Livigno in the Italian Alps for years to train at altitude and recently to Colombia in the winter - as a full-time pro cyclist she has the time and money to do so, although she still pays for it all herself. There's also a theory that the shorter distances make the women's races more intense and therefore entertaining - it's full-on from the get-go - certainly women's pro cycle races can be every bit as exciting as the men's, often more so, like at Strade Bianche and last week at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. Still doesn't really answer your question but it's been quite heavily discussed and right now there just isn't the desire for it within the women's peloton. Women's pro cycling is on the up, though, and the distances might creep up correspondingly as the years go by.
