Probably the best video on the subject of rear brakes concerning the Crafter I / Sprinter 906. Congrats, mate - well done! 😊👍 Aside from the technical descriptions and the actual work being spot-on, one cannot over emphasize the cleanliness of the job. Once the grimy, rusty remnants are gone, it is important to have clean paws when reassembling the new parts. 🤚✋ The backing plates are often overlooked during the service, especially when the emergency brake linings are left unattended. Perfectly spotted here. 👍 Personally, I would have swapped the calipers at the same time, but if there is no issue with them, re-using them works too. As a little reminder: Remember to change the brake fluid regularly as well, the Crafter I / Sprinter 906 brakes are borderline on a fully loaded van to begin with, and keeping them up to their best performance is absolutely mandatory. 😎

Nice presentation Sam, did my relay a few weeks ago which was slightly different because of front wheel drive. Mine were in such poor condition I'm surprised it passed it's last MOT.👍 Also found that the near side wheel bearing was needing replacing. New hub was cheap enough so I got one.

Another quality video Sam, however in my experience always get genuine Mercedes parts for the rear shoes as the common handbrake sticking fault is caused by a seized lever the cable attaches to. I think that is only available in the genuine brake shoe pack. The back plate is for the brake shoe springs, absolute nightmare doing those, in future I’m paying someone else to do it. Thanks for the upload 👍

Nice video Sam. Now all you’ve got left to do is change the flexi hoses and fluid. Just did mine at the same time but tbf mines 12 years old and hoses were stamped 2010 in line with the build date. They are the same front and rear. With the handbrake I slacken the cable right off at the adjuster nuts before adjusting the shoes up then with the road wheel on, just with one wheel stud out to allow me to turn the cog wheel, saves using the Tommy bar in between studs to rotate the disc/wheel. Also having the wheels on while adjusting the cable back up allows you to push the wheels round with your feet while still under the van to see when they started binding, saves rolling out n checking each time as I’m not getting any younger! Interesting point on the pad sensors as mine have always been on the outside pad since I’ve bought the van at 5yrs old so have kept it that way. Now you’ve got me thinking I should’ve changed the backplate as well for peace of mind although mine didn’t look as rusty as yours. Off to Ukraine in it next month so hope the shoes don’t let go there. 😂 Have a good summer.

I worked for merc, putting that spring on it easy if you know how, use some wire and hook it on the spring then make a loop in the wire and pull it with a pair of piers or a screw driver

Great video, good knowledge will be checking that rear plate on mine. Preventative is better than reactive, nothing truer! Sadly not a common approach these days!

Thanks Sam, really useful and informative video. You're right with, in generally, people don't know the amount of post production work. Or the hassle to put tools down and film. I'd never have the patience! When I did our handbrake shoes, it took me ages to adjust that wheel. Great idea using the bolts for leverage though 😀👍

You should do brake fluid flush every 50K km. Moisture in brake fluid is a major cause of caliper piston seizures.

Thank you, nice funny my vw talvor (crafter) rear discs started squeeling when I reversed yesterday, never did that before pads are fat not worn out, not so easy on 4.5 tonnes duel rear wheels to get too a little bigger than your van hmm ?? I had the front pads done, and although not worn at all, one of the sliders was jammed, so that helped stop better, so I have to find someone to check now as I have no home to go fix myself anyway enjoy your work u have the same engine as mine brakes etc also only dual rear wheels cheers Harry

Hi mate. Good video. Question. I'm replacing handbrake, discs, pads... I just managed to get the handbrake shoes back in but the new disc doesn't fit over it. The adjuster is wound all the way in, I'm scratching my head what gives. Any suggestions?
