I have had this model sitting in a drawer for close to a year because I loved the sculpts from this studio but I really had no clue how to begin. I didn't want to screw it up because these are pricey models, but finally I have a guide. Many thanks. I would be eternally grateful if you could do a video on the Attagirl model from Life Miniatures. Another awesome sculpt.

Hank, another fine job! I really do like the way your figures turn out, and I think your technique is very good. On camera especially when you are showing your fine detail work I noticed many of your brush tips are curled. I had been struggling for years with that, I'd buy a new brush paint with it for a short while and the darn tip would start to curl. I noticed that at least for me it was worse with synthetic bristle brushes when using acrylic paint. I still use synthetic bristle but for my detail work, faces, eyes etc. I use more expensive red sable and I only use those pricier brushes for figure painting. Also with all my brushes I always end a painting session by cleaning them in a good brush soap. Even when using enamels and oils, I clean out all the white spirit I can and use the brush soap. After they are cleaned, I roll the bristles in the soap and point them with my fingers and leave the soap in the brush. The soap holds them in a point, sort of like a starch and rinses out completely the next time I go to use them. If you're lucky it can even restore a brush that's already curled so long as its not too bad but it's really more of a preventative measure. Unfortunately no matter what you do brushes always eventually wear out but if you aren't using it already I suggest you give it a try. I find Masters brush soap to be a fine product and a container will last for years and its inexpensive.

another good method to get a nice skin tone is to spot paint a base coat of pink/red first, then put a flesh tone over it

Do you ever have issues with enamel thinner removing gloss varnish? Sometimes when I apply gauzy agent (by airbrush) over paint, I notice if I then add enamel thinner, it can remove the gloss varnish and everything below it. I apply it in multiple coats and it still seems to seep through in some places. Of course, this is all occurring after the gauzy agent dries! But do you ever have that issue?

I personally haven't had that issuenwi5h the AK Gauzy Agent, but I have had similar problems with other varnishes in the past. What brand of thinner are you using?

Hi Hank, just found your channel and I am so impressed with your work. You make it easy for me to follow step by step which includes painting the face on 1/35 scale, I have found this difficult until now I am a veteran of 41 years in the Military UK Forces and suffer from PTSD, working on these models and painting them takes my mind from my Military Service.....Question what size brushes can you buy for face painting on the models as I find it difficult here in uk to find that size. Love your channel and looking forward to many more learning skills from you. Regards Chris Dorrington

Hey there Chris - thank you for watching! I'm very glad to hear that the hobby has been a bit of a relief, that's a great thing. As for the brush sizes, I don't follow any particular rhyme or reason for the technical size of the brushes I use. I'd recommend searching for a brush set for "miniature painting" & you should get a fine selection. Hope that helps! 🖌️

I have acrylis and other water based sluge washes, would you still reccomend a coat of varnish before the wash. B.T.W. love your channel as you explain things in terms most people understand, keep up the great work hopefully for many years to come.
@SpruesNBrews
@SpruesNBrews Жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! And yes, a coat of varnish is always a good idea. I would just do a little test with the varnish/wash pairing on an inconspicuous part of the model before you go after the whole thing just to make sure there isn't some funky reaction between the two. Otherwise, you should be all set! Thanks for your support and happy building! 👍

Holy crap this came out amazing. I've read about this woman, and seeing you recreate her/honor her in this figure is outstanding. I recently started using the AK intermediate gauzy agent, and I just sprayed my Tamiya T34 last night, and when I put on two of the decals on the turret, the decal solution took off some of the top coat and the paint underneath it revealing the black primer. Is this because I didn't let it cure long enough, or are decal solutions (like Tamiya Mark Fit Strong and Mr. Setter/Mr. Softer combo) just too harsh? Final follow up: can I use reapply the base paint on the gauzy agent before applying the matte finish, or will that look weird? (sorry for constantly bombarding you with my questions!)
@SpruesNBrews
@SpruesNBrews Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed. And sorry to hear about your decal situation. I don't have experience with Mr. Setter, but I can vouch for Mark Fit Strong being VERY aggressive. I haven't personally had it do that much damage, but I know it can be pretty intense. I would definitely recommend letting the Gauzy cure a little longer before trying again - hopefully that's your problem. Good luck! 👍
@TheBattleRabbit860
@TheBattleRabbit860 Жыл бұрын
@@SpruesNBrews Thank you! I will definitely do that. I am saving the other decals until it's been a full 24 hours, at least, before trying again. Luckily the damage is minimal and can easily be turned into weathering, from the looks of it.

Thanks! Yeah resin can be pretty expensive - I think it's worth the extra investment, but it totally depends on what you're looking for in a figure. You can do a lot with some of the nicer plastic figures out there, too!
