I believe the Wehrmacht had plenty of the heavy overcoats available. Asking the German public for winter coats was a publicity stunt. But...the Germans had to choose between shipping fuel, ammo, food and heavy overcoats to the front. Hitler was warned that logistics would not be able to be maintained for more than 700KM, but he chose to ignore the warning. Fuel, ammo and food won out over, uh...overcoats. In 1942 the winter uniforms could be shipped in small enough batches that they wouldn't affect the other needs.

It is often overlooked that the European winter of 1941-42 was the coldest of the twentieth century. People laugh at the Germans today for being outfitted inadequately because it fits the meme of attacking Russia in winter. But this was really a once-in-a-century event and completely unpredictable.

The winter was not what stopped the German blitz. It helped them. What stopped the German advance was the Fall, because it is the wet season in Eastern Europe. This wet season turned dirt roads, airfields, and fields to mud making moving tanks, trucks, logistics, planes, and infantry near impossible. The German advance became a crawl, and bought time for the Soviets to reinforce and prepare defenses around Smolensk, Moscow, Tula, and Orel. When the winter came, it froze the ground and allowed the Germans to move again without getting bogged down.

I am a German. Grandpa, both uncles fighting in Russia. The Wehrmacht, Hitler, did a prevention attack on Sowjetunion. Almost too late, Hitler got knowledge, stalin wanted to attack western Europe. The Wehrmacht attacked Sowjetunion only 2 weeks before the they attack. That's the reason for the mass losses of personal and military in the first days of the war by su. The Wehrmacht was NOT prepared for a war against Russia. So, they also get less winter clothes? No. Hitler ordered winter clothes in early phase of war against Russia. But , it was sabotage. The train with clothes stuck in Poland. And Neckermann? His Winter clothes was like Modern goretex! Climate membrane! Und what happened after he make this invention? Sabotage! He was ordered to military as a normal soldier! But high ranking offiziell, stoped this. So he can managed the mass fabrication. And, after the war. A lot of soldiers came to Neckermann. Tell him. Being so thankful. This winter uniform rescues his life. Special! In the death camp if the USA in the Rhein fields. The USA threatening the German pow not as POWs. They handling than as unarmed fighters. They took all field assembled like tend and field Ofen. Put them on a field with no covers from weather. So, it's a secret up to these days. And we Germans are not allowed to do a research. We not know how many Germans surrender soldiers died on this fields. By starving and freezing by cold. But the soldiers with Neckermann Winter Uniform, got the best chance to survive.

Wrong, German soldiers were exceptionally well treated while POW’s in the USA. My Grandfather was in charge of many POW camps and they were very well treated. Far better than our POWs in Germany. German POWs who volunteered even recieved pay and excellent food and many did not want to return after the war. That’s a fact!
