I'm building a race engine myself and I'm enjoying all the tips and stuff for b series. But the torquing sequence on the mains. If the torque wrench clicks as soon as you start pulling on it you need to back it off and get it to turn and click all in one motion. Static friction is always greater than kinetic friction, so if it clicks immediately you're registering the amount of static friction instead of kinetic friction and you need to back the bolt off a little and kind of start over. If you address the at a later time or you've learned about this since the time I commented just ignore me. It's 3 am and I'm a semi-drunk engineer. Aside from that, awesome video. Please let me know if you want some gnarly carbon fiber parts for any of your cars as I'm trying to start a custom carbon aero company and I love to work with other racers that give a shit about the community and stuff.

Hey love this series , just a future note , next time you assemble pistons and Con-rods weigh each of the pistons and con rods and pair the heaviest piston to the lightest Con-rod and the lightest piston to the heaviest con-rod etc. it will insure that the engine is as balanced as possible

Just found this channel last night and I love the honesty, the detailed explanations and everything. Just a tip tho, you when taking off main caps just leave the bolts in after you loosen them and just use a mallet to hit it free. Its easier for me. Just a tip tho

Getting an Integra probably post 94-95, and was planning on boosting it to make around 300-350hp at Max. Do you think taking the entire engine our and building it how you are is necessary ? If not what is the extent of things j should do to it ? Thanks.
@zacotis25506 жыл бұрын
Last time I checked the larger valves ( and the larger reliefs) are exhaust. You’ve got it twisted when combustion happens the fuel burns and the expanding gases are what drive the piston down - I.e. MORE gasses are being released during the exhaust stroke. It’s an explosion not an implosion, and as a result the larger valves are exhaust. Because they have to flow more freely than the intake plenums. I may be wrong maybe the intake valves have more lift requiring more relief but I’m pretty certain you’re the only doing the pistons backwards. Which also isn’t good they’re not perfect circles. Was the scoring primarily on the intake side?
@SPTuning6 жыл бұрын
I dont mean to be rude, but intake is larger. Look it up
@zacotis25506 жыл бұрын
SP Tuning it is larger but your analogy threw me for a loop. It’s dead opposite of what actually happens. Exhaust is larger volume (again expansion) but cylinder pressure from the upward exhaust stroke primarily force the gasses out. They’re smaller because it’s more beneficial to put that volume towards intake where air is not normally pressurized
@SPTuning6 жыл бұрын
Okay, youre over thinkinng my analogy. Heres my analogy: Intake : air and fuel (two things) Exhaust: burnt air (one thing) Simple analogy. Dont over think it
@blind12846 жыл бұрын
SP Tuning the larger valves will ALWAYS be the intake side. ALWAYS.
@carlosnanez84546 жыл бұрын
Ackchyually is harder to suck air in to the combusiton chamber than to push it out thru exhaust cycle, also the air/fuel mix is still expanding at the end of the same cycle, so it finds its way out through the exhaust valve more easily than fresh air entering thru the intake
@projectcarsmodz17756 жыл бұрын

so is the purpose of grinding the piston rings to make them all the same size? or do all the tops have to be the same and all the bottoms the same? Or what? I also didn't understand the (plasti gauging?) process?
@Mattwallable3 жыл бұрын
The "WD" in WD-40 stands for "water displacing" so it's not actually a lubricant, if you didn't know.
@Alani.W6 жыл бұрын
Your method of pushing pistons before the crank shaft is in its 100% safe because there is nothing will interfering with the piston rods when you push the piston in so in this case there is a small chance of braking piston rings while pushing piston but some times when you put the crank in the crank won’t spin freely because of a lot factor like Machine shop mistake they still human and the make mistakes in measurement some times so in your case you can’t verify if the crank will spin without Biting in main bearing because you piston rods will interfering with the crank so what I do I make sure the crank is in first I spin it with hand force if it is Smooth spin I go and push pistons in ...

Shouldn't the piston and rods be assigned to each cylinder during the machining process to have the clearances set?

I have a question man, so you torque your mains and rod caps to what specification if you use plastigage? Ex: use half spec because stock motors have TTY bolts? How do you go about that
@SPTuning6 жыл бұрын
I use stock honda spec for the mains, and whatever your SPECIFIC manufacturer of the rods specifies
@Limeayy6 жыл бұрын
Okay, well now i have another question, i don't know if i missed this info but you do a very good detail work on explaining things through but did you use TTY bolts or aftermarket ARP bolts or something? Also, if they are TTY bolts, that should be only 1 use. So how would i go about that? Reuse the old bolts to check plastigage to see if in spec then replace the bolts and carry on the assembly with engine?
@ShaunHensley6 жыл бұрын
Lime This is actually a good question. But what can a builder realistically do? Maybe use old hardware for clearance check and new hardware for final assembly

@gsrhatch146 жыл бұрын
So what if the clearances are off? What do you do? Great videos just subbed!
@SPTuning6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the support! If clearances are off , theres a few things you can , but your safest and best bet would be take to a machine shop and let them do the necessary machining work to get everything into spec. From that point on your probably be told by the machinist to run a different engine bearing. Instead of a “standard size “ youll need a +/- sized bearing

Do you lube under the bearings or just on top?
@SPTuning6 жыл бұрын
Under and on top
@toddbentley54166 жыл бұрын
If you lube under the bearing you run the risk of the bearing spinning in the block, especially under heavy loads. The notch in the bearing can help prevent this, but with a heavily modified motor it isn't hard to spin a bearing if it's sitting on oil
@SPTuning6 жыл бұрын

Let me say your videos have been very helpful, I'm feeling confident that I can handle my own rebuild myself. I do have a few questions though. My b18b bottom end is already bored out to 81.5, eagle rods, je srp pistons and stock crank. Well she started to develop a very small knock. In my case would I need to strip it down and send the block and crank to the machine shop and have it rehoned and have the crank polished and just re ring and put on a fresh set of bearings , or do I buy 82mm pistons and new rods and take all that to the machine shop? If I do that what do I tell them to do. I want to do the assembly myself just need to know what I'm supposed to tell the shop. thanks again definitely subscribed

@dustinninja28036 жыл бұрын
Did you buy an eBay kit that had rods and pistons?
@iridebmx5336 жыл бұрын
Good video man, so plasti gauging the crank is to just insure the crank and bearing tolerances are within spec correct? Say you ran into them being out of spec what step would you take? I'm building my own LS vtec
@SPTuning6 жыл бұрын
If it close you can micropolish the crank and get it a little looser. If not re grind crank and get over sized bearings if im not mistaken, but at that point that type of things is better left to a machine shop which has the machines , tools, and engine all at once to fix the issue in one process

Does eat ring gap change based on its piston? Like was your gap different from piston 1-2?
@SPTuning6 жыл бұрын
Changes based on the cylinder. All the pistons will be the same, but rings will be specific to the specific cylinder
@rcdrager6 жыл бұрын
So for example. I'm looking to run 16 thousands on cylinder 1 & 4 but what would be the best for 2 & 3?
@SPTuning6 жыл бұрын
Also 16 thousands. Sorry, i think ur misunderstanding. You want gap to be the same across the board, but you need to file piston ring 1 for cylinder 1. Once you did that you file 2 for cylinder 2 etc. they will all come to thw same gap. Lets say cylinder 1 is 81.5mm on the dot, but cylinder 2 is 81.525 mm (random numbers for refrence) cylinder 2 and 1 will need the rings filed a different amount to both reach that 16 thousandths. You know what i mean?
