lol. About 20 years ago my buddy moved into a new house with a big L shaped back yard. We made a par 4 in his yard. There was a pine tree at the bottom of the L shape blocking the direct shot to the green that we made. Therefore we had to lay up then hit the second shot to the green. Everything pitching wedge. lol. The green was only 5ft by 5ft. We made the green by lowering the blades on the lawn mower to their lowest point. We then dug a hole and put a plastic drinking cup in it. We spent plenty of afternoons drinking and playing a faux round of golf. Even betting. lol. Total cost to build was zero dollars. Total fun was tremendous! Enjoy your better version. We had tons of fun with ours.

Bottom line: if you don’t have a ton of property and money then live vicariously through Spud Run Golf and if you have to have a green get a synthetic for about $10,000 and have little to no maintenance for 10 years. This is from somebody who is speaking from experience. I’ve tried to grow a green for 2 years now and there is ALWAYS something going wrong. Herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, fertilizer, drought, mower maintenance, etc etc etc. and that’s AFTER you do all the work of installing the green. I keep doing it because I actually enjoy doing the work but most people think I’m crazy…..including my wife. Great content as always, keep making the videos!

One of my many jobs was a golf course mechanic. there I got to understand how astoundingly complex turf-management is in this capacity. they cut down the greens to 3/16 and 5/32! and it's flat as a board. try getting that on your lawn at home, you can't. it takes massive work to build the green and maintain it with specialized mowers to achieve that level. I always had to ride out and adjust those greens mowers so they would be accurate if they left lines on the grass. then you have all of the chemical and feed treatments, it's not for everyone and it's not as easy as some might imagine, no way. it will be very expensive but awesome to do. 🏁

I've just paid my full 7 day membership fees at my local club in Surrey, UK. We had a big increase this year due to some big projects that need doing. My fees were $1,900 and my club is 2 miles away. I was thinking gosh, that's a lot of money...and now I feel like I got a great deal! OK it's not my own personal property, but I can drop in and out as I please. Though tbh to build your own hole in South East England you'd have to be a millionaire by default as you wouldn't be able to afford a property with any land without shelling out millions. So I guess in England if you have the land you can probably afford the work.

Oh you also forgot something lining the green with special geofabric, around the sides if you don't you get a wicking affect where the clay soil pulls the moisture out of the root zone, ending up with dry soil and turf issues in the front like you have. If the green falls from front to back, or like any real green falling to any side you should add a smile drain because moisture can build up especially with the geofabric. The smile drain runs along the edge of the front of the green like 6 to 12 inches from the edge, hence giving a smile affect, it catches any water the drainage misses

Sort of why I went for the pasture golf/links style when putting together my own course, like the old timers used to make. The land is unaltered other than regular mowing, and the greens have a bit of sand and the occasional rolling, but that's it. A lot of old-time greens were actually "browns" being just dirt or sand patches, so it's something to consider if you want to ease the complexity and maintenance side of things. It's a bit more rough and ready than the finely manicured complexes we have today, but it serves. Add some hickory clubs, and it's like stepping back in time. If you have a green spot, you can have a course of some kind. I've seen people with very limited space make chippng courses on their lawns or use limited flight balls to drive then regular ones to putt out.

If you lived in a different location, sure Fescue would make sense but not in Ohio where if also gets hot AF and droughts are common. It's your hole and you can do whatever you want but with newer technology and better cultivars we aim to save water and use the best grass that fits the needs of the course or your hole in this situation. Good luck with the Fescue but cutting it short brings in all kinds of factors once it matures and gets some age and I believe other grasses would of been a far better choice with less needed to be put into it
