Taiwan is controversial? It is one of the best regarded manufacturing countries in the world. I didn't realize anyone was debating this.

Exactly. I just got into watching this channel and quickly realized he's got a subtle anti-Asian bias despite the objective reality that Chinese and Taiwanese manufacturing is putting out some of the best blades money can buy.

@@nicks8026 Lets separate Taiwan from China. This is important both for historic and economic reasons.Taiwan is a capitalist democracy that has, in the last few decades raised its citizens to 1st world level economically. It is an important ally of the USA (and is an arch enemy of China) and its people produce many of the critical high tech, capital intensive, R&D parts that you are using right now in your PC and smartphone. I suspect they may also be able to produce a pocket knife, but apparently KZbin reviewers disagree.

@@Black_Cat_997 basically yes ... There knives are phenomenal... But... Not made in the USA... So for those of us living in the states, NOTHING will match a "Made in the USA" product to americans. So even if this knife far surpassed our USA blades (Hinderer) ..... We will never say it

The pivot has a D shape in the steel liner side so it doesn't spin. I had to re-bend my clip a bit but it's now great. I don't get how you can say it doesn't match up with other high end knives. The internal milling and scale texturing alone put it above standard CRKs and Hinderers for complexity.
@Danik0211

I re bent mine as well. Wasn’t anything difficult to achieve and it’s now functioning perfectly. I think the negative hype surrounding the pocket clip is just that. People made it out to be a much bigger issue than it was. It’s literally one of the best functioning pocket clips now in my collection. I think people just have an issue paying $400+ for a knife with a spider on it but will gladly do that when it says CRK. I think CRK’s are great knives too but IMO the drunken is much cooler and looks to have more machining time into it.

I actually got to handle this one at a local St. Nicks Knives, and while it's very nice, I don't see how it's worth over double what the SpydieChef costs. The Chef is a much better value, especially with the LC200N.
@Danik0211
@Danik0211 4 жыл бұрын
Andrew Toole I own both. And yes it is a bit overpriced but it’s not over double. MAP prices are: $234 for the chef and $441 for the drunken. LC200N is basically a rust proof 154CM when it comes to edge retention. While s90v is far better at that. The Drunken has some crazy milling on both CF and TI sides and the mirror stone wash on the blade. That tends to drive the price. But I still think it’s about $75- $100 overpriced.

@@Danik0211 I don't deny the craftsmanship that went into it, and yes, with the recent price hikes, you're right, it's no longer over double, but it's roughly double the price, and I personally just don't see the value at all. But this is why the knife world is so cool today. There are so many options out there!

I’ve looked at this and it is fascinatingly ugly sort of like Telly Savalas. and I betcha it comes with a lollipop or should at least. The price point is high but you can’t doubt the quality. The shape is like an undulating eel. The handle which you point out is not very ergonomic to you is something I thought about just by looking at it in photos and this video. Your review helped in confirming my observation. Thanks again. Keep it real. Keep it coming. Ain’t nobody doing reviews as entertaining and educational as you in my book.

Great Review man, as an owner in love with his Drunken.. You do make some very valid points. I had to put an A.Purvis clip on mine after the original crapped it's pants. Yes the Spydie flick... It really takes some getting used to, and is definitely possible... About 70% of the time, every time 😂 The price, yeah its steep, and to me who was just getting into knives last year.. I didn't know many brands, Spyderco being the go to as such.. Pm2 was the queen of the collection.. Saw the Drunken and instantly fell in love with the overall Asthetics, so in my head at £370, man maths... it was 2 and a half Pm2s. So I saved I bought, I loved, the clip shit, I hated, £150 worth of clip later I loved it again.. And still do. However had I known more about Hinderer or Chris Reeves I might have went that direction.. But its all a learning curve. Overall to me the Drunken is just like that dog you had that cost you a shit ton of money and it shit on the rug the moment you brought it home...and as it gets older it just doesn't want to take orders.. Its a pain in the arse, but you can't help but still love it. That is just this pricks "isolated opinion" Have a good weekend bro, keep up the good work 👊💪🍻

The CF side has a milled stainless steel liner. I don’t know why, it’s stupid and pointless. I own the knife and still love it. In it’s current form it’s heavier than the spydie-chef. It’s not a hard use knife so CF show scale without SS liner would’ve been sufficient for EDC use and it would’ve lightened the knife. It’s not as good of a slicer as my chef. It’s a bit thicker behind the edge. I really wish Spyderco ground it .015 behind the edge or thinner. Would’ve been a dream.

I have to disagree on the price. This is what I don’t understand about youtubers when it comes to this knife. With the materials used and the extensive milling, which requires more time and tooling, they still complain about the $440 price yet gladly pay $525 for a CF sebenza with a plain spring clip. Blows my mind. I’ll take s90v over s35vn any day of the week.
@metal_complex
@metal_complex 4 жыл бұрын
US manufacturing is quite a bit more expensive. Also, you're putting S90V up on a pedestal over S35VN without any question of circumstantial use. It's ok to have preferences, but us "KZbinrs" sometimes think about these little details outside of individual opinion.
@nebulamask81
@nebulamask81 4 жыл бұрын
I would much rather pay $525 for a CF Sebenza than $440 for this. Couple of blade options, if something happens to a CR knife they'll take care of you, free annual "spa", CR does an awesome job on their S35vn HT (better balanced steel), hollow ground, and that's not even getting into the design or asthetics...
@Black_Cat_997

@@metal_complex I don't think U.S. manufacturing is "quite a bit" more expensive.
@Danik0211
@Danik0211 4 жыл бұрын
DontBotherNone half the stuff you listed is nothing but preferences. CRK’s are thicker behind the edge than my Drunken and that matters more to me than hollow grind vs flat when I’m cutting. As far as steels, if you think s35vn is better balanced than s90v then you don’t know much about steels. You need to watch more Cedric & Ada, Michael Christy and Super Steel Steve tests. And lastly, multiple edge retention tests on YT showed Spyderco s90v out performing/cutting the Sebenza s35vn by more than double by people who actually test these knives and not just open a boxy and do a “review”. In fact, Spyderco Kapara in s30v out cut a sebenza in s35vn. But there’s is myth going around claiming s30v being chippy by guys who lift manhole covers with their folders. So if you rather pay more for a sebenza then go for it. That’s your right. Nothing wrong with that. It simply comes down to a knife that was made in Taiwan and has a spider logo costing over $400 and that doesn’t sit well with people. In that case they’re not judging the product itself but the irrelevant facts surrounding it.
@Danik0211
@Danik0211 4 жыл бұрын
Metal Complex so with that logic if this was produced in US and cost $525 you wouldn’t complain? You get more with the Drunken as far as materials and finish than you do with a sebenza and it’s $100 less. Doesn’t that kinda cover the gap in the country of manufacturing? And I’m not placing s90v on a pedestal. What you’re actually doing is placing US manufacturing on a pedestal. There are plenty of videos on YT showing s90v out performing s35vn, by a long shot. In fact there are videos showing s30v out cutting s35vn.

All my Cold Steels, my Rat 1 & 2, and some of my Spydercos. All admittedly much lower priced knives. But with that said, I think the Drunken is way overpriced. I can get a US made Hinderer for what this costs, or a CR Sebenza for just a bit more. I’m sure it’s a fine knife, but I’ll never pay over 400 for a spyderco.
