Spyderco Police: First Impressions

Those are the first model and all others with different scales came after. But even this model has evolved over the years since the 80s. Beautiful/deadly lookin knife and really awesome quality

This exact knife, but fully serrated and without the alternative pocket clip mounting holes has been my EDC since 2008 and I love it. I carry it inside the waistband at 3 o’clock, which is why I love how slim it is. Mine flicks out, but still has rock solid lockup. Try some oil maybe.

Awesome video, had one of these before, damn good knife! To sharpen serrations, ignore the traditional way for sharpening each individual serration and knocking the burr off the flat side. Takes forever. Do the opposite: All you have to do is sharpen the flat side (the back) of the serrations like you would any other knife until a burr is raised on the serrated side. Then knock the burr off the serrated side using those conical serrated sharpeners, 400 grit is good enough. The serrations won't last this way, once a week sharpening for 2 years and they're gone BUT it's quick, convenient and easy. Also, very easy to get it hair shaving sharp this way. Once the serrations are gone, reprofile to straight edge or Just buy a new knife lollll.

First Spyderco was a full stainless Endura 20 years ago in AUS6, loved that knife, the heft, blade shape, easy in and out of pocket cause it's smooth & I punished it daily, sharpened super easy. People trip on weight these days (thank Nutnfancy for that) for no real reason, like they are going on a Mountain trek and have to shave oz's. I like the security of knowing I got a hunk of steel in my pocket, not a pile of plastics & I treated it accordingly. Eventually blade got wobbley I just peened center rivet with a "ballpeen" hammer and it tightens right up. Anyways buy a steel handled Spyderco for Gods sake and treat it like an actual tool, you won't break it... Easily.

For two knives that seem so similar at a glance, they couldn't be more different. I've done countless hours of hard work with both and the only objective point I can offer is that the police is _better_ if you're gonna be using gloves most of the time. That's not to say the military is bad with gloves, just that that's where a backlock shines. Also, the police 4 is the best currently available platform for k390, in my opinion. The only better option would be the military. It may also be worth mentioning that a military 2 with a compression lock is in the works.

Pete at Cedric & Ada has a good comparison of the two knives. They're dissimilar enough knives that one of the two will be far better for you, depending on how you intend on using it.

@@theswingingaxe4876 one thing that would narrow it down for me is avoiding any of my money going to the CCP. That means no Resilience. That said, I own a Police 4 K390 with the G10 and steel liners, an S110V Military in blurple G10, and an S90V Native Chief with the carbon handles. The Police is by far my favorite, but that's just me. Depending on your priorities, each one could be the best choice for you. If you want the longest cutting edge and thinnest in pocket, but don't mind some extra weight, get the Police. If you want the most acute tip and lightest weight, and don't ever think you'll be using the knife with gloves, get the Chief. If you want something kinda tactical that works great when wearing gloves, get the Military. What are your priorities / must haves?

@@theswingingaxe4876 I also love the look of the Chief. The handle shape just isn't super comfortable for me, which is abnormal for a Spyderco. The chamfers are so minimal pretty much everywhere on it (think even smaller chamfers than on the PM2), that I think it would be blister time if I had to use it for a while. If you don't mind taking sandpaper to it, it can probably be fixed and would probably feel wonderful in hand. If I had the G10 version, I'd have already rounded everything, but I'm skittish about doing it to my beautiful carbon fiber handle. The Police, on the other hand, is so comfy in its stock config. And the thing that really sold me on the Police was learning that Sal considers it to be one of his very favorite designs. I saw in a forum post that the Police 4 was something of a vanity project for him. He just spoke so lovingly about the design, that I got swept up by the passion. And I agree with him, it's a masterpiece. Like all my favorite Spydercos, it's not necessarily beautiful to look at, but it's near perfect in every other way.

Always send your serrated Spyderco back to Spyderco for their proprietary sharping service. Anyone else will simply ruin it. Simple, fast and cheap.

Any idea as to the blade steel used on this version of the Police? Purchased mid-80s, Spyderco on one side, Seki Japan other side. Guesses as to steel type.

They were made from many steels before the advent of VG-10. The order starts with a steel called Gin-1, then Gin-2, then ATS-35, then ATS-55, THEN finally to VG-10. My police model is made of ATS-55. It was a proprietary steel only spyderco ever used. Sal had it made tonhemis specifications.

i have an og one my da bought in the 90s full serrated blade the police is carved in the blade not laser engraved and you cant see the pins like in this one

You can’t see the pins here either. Perhaps you mean the screw holes for different pocket clip positioning? Mine doesn’t have that either. It’s tip down right side, no other positions possible

@@Bisley1 no mines smotth steel the whole handle i can send you pics if you want , minnes a legit spyderco from the 90s or earlier my dad bought it when i was like ten 2000 era and it was used and stuff for years by then but still perfect condition , my knife is a real spyderco that knife in the video isnt even the real metal its glossier , the real one . the one in the video is flat chrome and theres no dumb spyder logo engraved on it
