Thanks for the follow-up video. I bought a Police 4 partly on your earlier full review. I have a lot of respect for this design and designer. The knife is everything it needs to be and nothing it doesn't. The designer, Sal Glesser, has the kind of design prowess that sometimes comes only with maturity- the insight to know when the design is finished, and the self-confidence to stop at that point. Furthermore, execution of the design is flawless, i.e. per Apostle P, the hafting on the lock surface is exquisite. No lock rock in mine yet, but I haven't used it hard. I can see where not having a sharpening choil is a practical issue, but at least the plunge grind is square, and I must say I prefer the blade shape, aesthetically, without it.

The design is especially brilliant when it's put in historical context. I'm old enough to remember the '80s, and back then switchblades were very illegal and very associated with illegality. But if you think you might need to use a knife in some kind of combat (as opposed to cutting an apple), you really do want either a switchblade or a fixed blade knife, because you want to be able to deploy the knife one-handed (because you may only have one hand available) and fast. Sal Glesser invented a legal knife that was extremely lethal, could be quickly opened one-handed, and yet was also light and compact--ideal for a cop.

You made my buy this. Loved it ever since. My only beef with it is that it begs to be used around the kitchen but the closed construction and rust prone steel makes it less than ideal.

You actually want a carbon steel in the kitchen just develop a patina on it that will make it less reactive to food

It patinas great... I used it for food prep all the time and I just rinse it off with dawn and water, blow it out with compressed air, and put froglube in the pivot. (Food safe)

The VG10 version is an ace in the kitchen. The steel is decently stainless, is commonly used in high end kitchen knives, and takes a razor edge while polishing to a mirror if desired.

Sharpening choils are nice for sharpening but annoying when the knife is actual y being used, just a place for material to slide into wile cutting, very annoying, it find myself trying to hold the knife so im blocking the choil and that's dangerous

I've been waiting for the long-term review of the Police. They did it in Queensland back in the 80s and found some serious defects...(groan). Yes, I've been waiting for your review. EDIT: Now that I've watched it all, I am tempted to upscale from my No10 to one of these.

I have and really like the SS Police and Police IV. The original Police in stainless has 4 angles on blade, making it more flashy.

They make it hard for you to pull your knife out in a high stress situation, that's why non deep carry pocket clips stick out of the pocket a little bit so that you have something to grab quickly.

Hey I am running my Mantra 2 at exactly 14 degrees per side with a perfect mirror polish (down to 0.25 micron diamond strops) and it is just e perfect slicer. the cpm M4 handles that very well.

Great video Pete! About the recurve from sharpening, what do you think about sharpening choils or adding your own? I've done a sharpening choil on a crkt minimalist and a finger choil that doubles as a sharpening choil on my zt0452cf.

I think this knife would be a lot better with CTS-XHP steel, similar edge holding but stainless. I still like it but meh... i don't want to bother oiling a pocket knife at all. It doesn't bother me on my 1095 fixed blades but i don't carry them all the time, just in the woods.

Another great video . Wish one of the knife company's would send you to shot show. Your very articulate in the way you describe knives and you always judge it's performance as a cutting tool before you Rant about aesthetics. I have the stainless version of this but mine isn't flat ground. Do you prefer the Flat grind or saber grind ? Which do you think cuts better ?Finally why do you think they made the stainless version a saber grind but the g10 flat ground.

Hmm, I don't know about that lock rock... I've got lock backs that aren't cold steel that have no lock rock, I have the endura and chaparral lightweight on me and neither have it. I'm sure the boker patriot doesn't either or my cheapo schrade copperhead (don't giggle). If it was a $180 U.S. frame lock would you be o.k. with it? I'd send it in for a warranty fix.

I like the way you think. I'm a fan of larger knives and I use them a lot. My usual carry is a Recon1 spear point. I've been eyeing the police 4 for many years, and recently learned Spyderco is discontinuing their Police4 k390 blue frn handle fully serrated version. I usually prefer a straight edge, but while looking into them again noticed a lot of big sellers have them on sale right now. So I just grabbed one, $120USD shipped total. I know this is 5+ years old, but figured if you haven't already and if you're still around this may be a good reminder/chance.? The back lock is strong enough for what it is, and it's deploys fast. It's not ColdSteel Tri-Ad strong, but plenty strong enough for it's designed purpose, and the edge retention of k390 for this price point is amazing. Hope this finds you, Cheers
