**EDIT** I forgot Spyderco makes a left handed PM2 now, so you can ignore what I said about that. The Shaman, however, is currently only made as a right handed knife. Also, I forgot to mention that since the PM2 still has that lanyard barrel to work around during disassembly, the Shaman is probably the easiest to take apart.
@JerryLoffelbein4 жыл бұрын
I've had a Manix 2 XL that I picked up months after it's initial release and it's a TANK (has solid steel liners), but has been with me nearly every day since. There's virtually no grip left to the G10 scales at this point, but with all the jimping it has, it's still super secure. It has a hook to the handle at the rear though, so if someone has truly enormous finger widths, a full 4 finger grip might be a little cramped (my Large - X Large glove sized hands work great). I did pick up the Blade HQ CPM M4 variant though, so I'll be carrying that more and more. The Shaman's quite comfortable, but the handle thickness does bother me a bit. Not in the hand, but in the pocket. That and it's expensive. Truth be told though, I'd LOVE to see them finally revise the standard Military model with a compression lock. They haven't done it with any of their 4" blades though, even though many have asked for it, so there has to be a reason for it... Like maybe they'd have to increase the thickness of the liners to keep the same strength and it adds too much weight. Either way, my experiences with Spyderco's liner locks haven't been the most favorable (Military, Captain, Tenacious, etc.).

The Shaman and Manix are my number one and two. For everyday, opening packages, breaking down light cardboard, whatever else, they’re both phenomenal. In hand, the z-wear Shaman (with a deep carry clip) is the most comfortable knife I’ve ever held. The Manix has a couple slight advantages for some stuff, though. The thinner blade is PERFECTION for breaking down heavier cardboard. That coupled with the overall heft of the knife…it’s one of the greatest working knives ever made, IMO. The other place the Manix really shines is that it’s fun to toy with. That lock is a lot of fun and it’s liquid smooth for a knife running on phosphor bronze. With the Shaman’s overall ergonomics and easy of carry, it’s still my number one. But the Manix is kind of a “1b”. It’s hard to call that knife “not as good as the shaman”. It’s more of a preference thing, I suppose.
@chimchu3232 Жыл бұрын
I like the pm2 and the manix more personally. I have a shaman, but I never really carry it, it's always seemed too bulky and heavy, and I like the ergonomics of the manix a lot more.
@manifestgtr Жыл бұрын
@@chimchu3232 Really? The shaman being bulky to some people has always kind of confused me. The difference between a shaman and a manix in my pocket has always been basically indistinguishable…sometimes I even forget which one I grabbed that morning…
@chimchu3232 Жыл бұрын
@manifestgtr yes, the shaman is noticeably thicker than the pm2 and the manix 2, and I have aftermarket scales on my manix that make it thinner than stock and 1.5 oz lighter, and for my hands the shaman is the least comfortable to hold and use. They are all fantastic knives, but those are my personal preferences. I know I'm the odd one out lol

I am sitting here flipping 2 Civivi Pintails, a Para 3 Lightweight, and a Manix 2 blurple G-10 with S110v steel. All while racking the slides on a Walther PPS M2 9mm and a Smith & Wesson Shield 45. Oh, and this while sipping some 4 Roses Single Barrel whiskey. No, I do not have any full magazines in the same room. Alcohol, knives, loaded guns...not smart. How much does anyone want to bet the first reply will be, "why not?"

First off, great review! I opted for the Para 3, for me its a great all around EDC knife. Then I bought the Shaman, needed something a tad bigger and robust. And now have just ordered the Manix 2, just cause its so F’ing cool and my Manix 2 xl needs his brother.

I used to hate how all spydercos looked back in the late 90’s and 00’s when I first got interested in knives. After not buying knives or having much need for them during the last 20 years, I started working where I could really use a good folding knife again. I think it was knife-videos on KZbin that got me thinking the PM2 might fit my needs and I bought one, black S45VN / G10. The knife has just been such a joy for me and I love everything about it, especially the way it lets me get any kind of grip very close to the edge for control and power/leverage when cutting/whittling… The PM2 is starting to look beautiful in my eyes, but simply because of how right the knife is for me. I have been curious about the manix and shaman and this video is one of many “PM vs” comparison videos I’ve watched and each time I decide that “nah, I like the PM2 more”. Other than maybe getting a PM2 in some super steel, the only other knife I expect to get tempted to buy, will be the newly announced Military-2, because it’s designed like a PM2 regarding the places where the thumb/index finger can be placed and because it also has a compression lock. Whether I get the new Military-2 or a super-steel version of the PM2 or not, I will still be very content just because of having my lovely simple black/G10 PM2 which I love!
@kennyplatt12355 жыл бұрын
I have them all, I love them all, and they all get pocket time, but if I had to keep only one, it would be the Manix. Best ergos to me, I think it slices as well as the PM2, which is better than the Shaman, and it’s better in the pocket than the PM2 to me, and on par with the Shaman. I’ve never cared as much about weight as profile in the pocket, and while the Manix is wide, it’s rounded butt and clip position make it easy to get your hand by it in the pocket. The Shaman is my second favorite, and it’s very close to the Manix for me, but it just doesn’t slice quite as well, and I prefer the choil and slightly shorter blade of the Manix for the typical EDC stuff that I usually do like opening boxes. The Para is great because it’s light and a little easier to flick open than either the Manix or the Shaman to me, but it never stays in the rotation as long as the other two. I mostly rotate between a Manix 2, a Shaman, and a Benchmade 940-2.
@Renaldo1354 жыл бұрын
I have an older Manix I bought in a store in 2003 or 04 which is a lock back. A Manix 2 Translucent blue lightweight model with the forgiving" pocket clip. And a Manix 2 which is better quality than either and more expensive than either but I carry the Translucent so often as an EDC both off and at work as a Police Officer due to the ease of the pocket clip and excellent light weight design. Some don't like the fact that the translucent has no liners in the handle but I have never had any issue's with wear or compromised safety. I also have a Para Military that I love but the first week I had it I set it on top of my police car to take off my gear to go exercise at our local track and drove off with it then when i realized what I had done luckily I heard the CLUNK driving about sixty miles an hour and my face got flushed in anger and worry. Luckily I found it on the road but it has road rash on the G10 and it opened up and broke off the tip. I fixed the tip and touched up the rash but was disappointed in myself. Spyderco's are great knives and easy to keep sharp but I do prefer the Manix style blade.
@billy_2473 Жыл бұрын
The PM2 compression lock works pretty good left handed if you have the clip moved over, eventually that clip will get loose on you though. Other compression locks I’ve handled can be pretty difficult or impossible to close left handed, probably just an ergonomic thing.

I had to pause the video and go and grab a PM2 and a Manix 2 from my knife box while watching this ( I already had the Shaman in my pocket). Lately the Shaman has been my main carry. I recently got the M4 version, and I absolutely love the blade shape and ergonomics, but I also love the Manix and PM2. I have 11 different models of each ( I have a problem). I absolutely agree that these 3 models are 3 of the best folders available, and I originally also thought that Spyderco was kind of ugly. Then on a whim I bought the S110v Manix and PM2 on the same day and have not bought another brand since.

You hit the nail on the head describing these. Yes.... I'm also a Spyderco fanboy.. I used to think they were ugly (but they have grown on me) and nothing beats them as a tool. I'm left handed, and it took me a little bit to get used to the compression lock awhile back, But I can manipulate a PM2, PM3, Shaman with my left as well as you manipulate with your right. But I get what your saying with feeling like you would drop it.. I trained my hand to hold at an angle when I close the knife instead of holding the knife vertical for that reason. I love your videos man. Just calling it how you see it, that's what I enjoy most.. I also really enjoy your voice impressions while poking fun at the plebs.. Always makes me smile.

Loving my Manix II Lightweight for about a year now. Since I'm not using it all day long, the lightness trumps more comfortable but heavier handle. At 2.85 ounces it is also fast to take out/put away which may have something to do with the slimness of the handle's profile...

I have the manix 2 with the limited edition M4 steel and a set of flytanium copper scaled on it. I absolutely adore it, it's my duty knife as an EMT. The shorter blade has been useful to me, since I've jammed the knife into a tree to use as a foothold during heavy rescue ops and the knife doesn't give a crap at all. But I kind of hate it as an EDC knife. It's just so tall when it's closed that it takes up a ton of pocket real-estate. And annoyingly the flytanium scales lose the ability to move the clip to the other side, and with the curve of the knife, with flytanium scales it basically becomes a left-pocket only blade. I have decided I need a new EDC knife for when I want something a little tougher than my CRKT CEO (a little blade I abjectly love for going out and having something that is very long and useful but doesn't terrify people) and I've settled on the smock. Weirdly, spyderco won't sell the automatic rescue knife to EMT's. They say there's a federal restriction - only police, military, and paramedics (EMT-P to my current EMT-B) no fire or "regular" EMS. But Benchmade will sell me their automatics as an EMT, and they are legal for me to use on duty in WA state. But I do get a 50% discount on spyderco's website as an EMT, so I'm not too upset. Ordered the Shempp bowie at the same time just for kicks.

Manix 2 is my favorite Spyderco knife, probably because I'm so used to the Axis lock on my Benchmade knives. I liked the Manix 2 so much that I got the lightweight (Spy27) version which is not a favorite. I could never get the lightweight version to loosen up, and I'm not a fan of the FRG scales. I don't own a Shaman but it's next on my wish list.

@srg914 - why do u like manix 2 better than pm2? details please
@abc456f5 жыл бұрын
@@gwailotus9154 Manix fits my hand like a glove, better than the pm2. The pm2 handles are squared off at the edges and can become uncomfortable with extended use. The manix has a more robust blade, especially at the tip. I don't think the pm2 is a bad knife and I probably would have kept it but I needed to free up some money to buy some other knives. Down the line I may up purchasing another. But I have to say that once I held the manix, it made the pm2 pale by comparison. Liked it so much I ended up buying the g10/s30v dlc coated blade model and then got a satin cruwear blade, g10 model as well. Also have a manix 2 xl which is a pocket sword. I will add that as impressed as I am with the manix, the Shaman is my favorite spyderco. Hope this helps.

The Shamen looks like a hunting knife to me, I’m no expert but that’s what I reckon, that’s why I love the design, I’ve got loads of Spydercos (Para 3 is my all time favourite EDC) but I just love the way the Shamen looks different to all mine plus I really love the scales.

My history with Sypderco's is the same as yours, at first I wouldn't consider them because I thought they were so ugly. I was playing with my Burple Para 2 and M4 Shaman, which was in my pocket today, while watching your vid for entertainment value. A Manix 2 is in my future. I would love to see a sprint run hollow grind Shaman in fluted carbon fiber, nice vid.

Hey mc old video but looking for information. I was looking for ti hardware for the manix but I can’t find any. I was wondering if pm2 hardware is the same except for the locking system being different of course
@peterpuleo29045 жыл бұрын
Spyderco is an acquired taste. I used to think they were unattractive, but over time, the designs now appeal to me. When you have several different variants of the same knife, are the differences color and type of steel only?
@metal_complex5 жыл бұрын
Usually. Sometimes you'll get a different handle material, and on rare occasions, a different lock type. But ya usually just color of g10/steel are different.

They should make a Shaman XL version. I would Totally be on board of an XL version of the Shaman with a 3.75" - 4.25" Blade Length. Right now, my Spyderco Manix 2 XL is one of my FAVORITE E.D.C. Knives.

Just stumbled across this. I have tried the Manix 2 and to me it never felt right. I own the PM2 and the Shaman rex. Of the two, I will always pick the PM2, even with the S30V. The flickablility of the PM2 is far superior.
@xxarea83xx5 жыл бұрын
How long does it take to break in the PM2? 3 days of flipping and a few hundred flips and the lock & detent seem to have only slightly loosened up and my thumb, index, and middle finger are all raw from trying to flip this thing open. How much longer or how many flips must it take to get easy manipulation of this knife?
@metal_complex5 жыл бұрын
You might add a little lube to the detent ball and see if that helps. After a couple of weeks, if it hasn't loosened up, I'd adjust the pivot a little tiny bit. At some point, the detent ball should wear in. Sometimes it just takes a while.
@xxarea83xx5 жыл бұрын
Metal Complex Thanks. I’ll try a lubricant. The pivot is not the problem tho. If I really force the compression lock in, the blade free falls pretty nicely.

Hey brother sorry to bother you I just appreciate your opinion and I trust it. I have had a couple Spyderco pm-2 and even a pm-3 and as I like them I broke the tips on two of the p.m. to us just because how thin they are a friend of mine has a shaman and I really like the robust everything about it but another friend has a manix 2 that he is selling and I'm wondering if the manix 2 is something I should buy or should I just wait and buy a new Shaman unfortunately the guy that has the manix 2 he would have to ship it to me he's not close enough for me to actually hold it but I want something more robust than finesse I guess would be the word how do you think the blade tip will hold up on the manix 2
@onetimeoutdoorsdj13944 жыл бұрын
Sorry I should have waited longer in the video I just heard where you said the shaman is definitely more robust all the way around. That being said is the tip on the pm-2 and the manix 2 the same or are they different
@whatfreedom73 жыл бұрын
I want a shaman with the manix lock mechanism but a 3 1/4” blade partially serrated and with a deep carry pocket clip. That would be the perfect spyderco and currently every spyderco I look at has a flaw I don’t like. The shaman,Manix 2 and Native are probably the closest with the exception the native only has the compression lock on the “lil” version.

That manix looks amazing!! My wife and I both like the looks of it Prolly going to get a set of those scales, I really have never been affected by weight, I've carried a zt 0301 for years so weight is a non issue for the most part. Was the weight enough to effect your feelings on your manix?

It definitely is heavy, but I got used to it. It's easy to carry in jeans for sure!

I have numerous spydercos but especially the PM2 and Manix2 g10 and blue lightweight. I don’t like the manic as much carrying due to the measurement going from the back of the knife toward the back of the blade when closed. It takes up a lot of pocket space. I may sell them and purchase something else. The PM2 is regular edc, native 5 lightweight more covert carry.

Just weighed my cruwear military, 4.44 oz. My s90v carbon fiber military that I lost fishing was lighter than that. My k390 endura that I just got inthe mail today is 3.25 oz. I guess Im saying that I dont need k390 or cruwear, i dont need a knife to be light. But I do want these features. So thats what I will be buying.
