the version i grew up with is pretty much the 1.0 version except they replaced the sorceress theme with spike's theme, and i didnt mind that at all since its the best trach in the game by far and more fitting for a "final" battle

I played the game as a kid (PAL version) roughly around release (like it must have been 2001) and I can confirm/deny the following: - evening lake and sunrise spring had the same music - boss fight actually had it's own theme but not the same as played in this video - haunted tomb actually had it's own theme and not the same as cloud spires - the speedways actually had their own tracks too - every other example always had the first track played for both worlds as shown in this video

I'm fairly certain the track for both of the Enchanted Towers minigames were meant for the whole level, but Sgt. Byrd's theme takes priority. Though, the whistling makes me think it was more intended for the wolf minigame rather than the skateboarding one. People likely say that the Evening Lake and final boss themes being Sunrise Spring is a result of a glitch is probably not only because both tracks are actually still in the game, but also because Sunrise Spring could easily be the default track, being the first home world in the game. One more thing, Spyro 1 has quite a few unused tracks specifically in the European version. Most just sound like slowed-down versions of other songs, but there's one original song in there. Why they're there is beyond me. Sorry for the long comment. I've had v1.0 all my life and it's really annoying that the PSN release isn't even the later version.

i grew up with the 1.0 version and honestly the only one i'm really upset about is the final boss. i've heard the greatest hits tracks and honestly i don't mind the way 1.0 has it. the only one from the greatest hits i particularly dislike is its track for lost fleet, to me it's just the sheila's alp track but with an addition that makes it annoying, and i honestly think its track in 1.0 fits it much better. other than that, while i still prefer 1.0's soundtrack, i definitely don't mind the rest in the greatest hits Edit: I also want to add that I feel like 1.0's Lost Fleet music fits Lost Fleet much better than the Super Bonus Round, and I feel like, if either of them should've been changed, it was the Super Bonus Round.
@Luke_Danger6 жыл бұрын
Same story, plus IMO Harbor Speedway is just superior to all the other speedway tracks as, well, a /speedway's/ OST. And honestly... even with the Sorceress it actually kinda fits. You've been building up to that since the start, but by this point you've beaten the likes of Spike and Scorch, and if you've struck around for the previous games you've also beaten Gnasty Gnorc, Crush, Gulp, and Ripto. The Sorceress is basically another day in the office for Spyro by that point.

I've had version 1.0 for all my life, and I never knew there was a completely different version of the game until recently. And then it started to really bug me, like why they would need some 2/3 different versions of the same game, just with changes to soundtracks. You explained it pretty well, thank you! Did you know that 1.0 is also missing a cutscene? The creation of Spike is never shown in my game. I guess they added it in for later releases. Honestly, the reused tracks never really bothered me too much. Maybe it's just because I grew up with them, but I always thought they were at least a bit fitting, especially compared to the tracks that are just remixed from other tracks. Lost Fleet as Sheila's Alp is MEGA weird to me. Super Bonus World was good, since they both had that 'treacherous, acidic pools' feel. Same with Dino Mines and Molten Crater, one's a volcano, one's a desert, the soundtrack has a 'its hot as hell' feel, better than Sunny Villa, anyway. The only one that really stuck out as strange to me was the Sorceress battle. Sunrise Spring? That's weird. I always figured it was just trying to take you back to the beginning, make you remember where you first started and what your journey is amounting up to. I much prefer the real boss track now, though. But, what's stranger still is how in some versions the fight is just Spike's Arena theme. I suppose it's better than Sunrise Spring but, why would they need three versions of the same game, different tracks, same fight...

My cousins and I noticed this as kids(we were HUGE Spyro fans and went through like two or three copies of each game)...my aunt bought us Spyro Three to play at our grandparents the day it came out, that must have been 1.0...but for Christmas 2001 my mother bought me a personal copy to play on our PSX at home, and I was flabbergasted at just how many new tracks were on it...of course back then, people weren’t dissecting video games as they are today, so there was no way of getting answers. My younger cousin and I also experienced the weird glitch in Spyro one where if you are in a level for a long time the music changes, sometimes even to tracks not meant to be used...it’s quite strange, even spooky at times. Of course, our eldest cousin wasn’t there at the time and didn’t believe a word of it 🤣, to this day she still doesn’t, Even when we’ve shown her evidence here on KZbin that the bug is there.

I own a platinum european version of this game: the Enchanted towers skate and Lost Fleet soundtracks are the same of the 1.0 you show in this video. I wasn't aware of those differences and I've always assumed the tracks were in the right place. they also fit well
@YFourteen6 жыл бұрын
13:25 in addition to that point, 9/10 if you use the swim in the air glitch and you swim to the top of the level, the game will freeze and start playing music from different levels. I’ve personally heard the Greatest Hits Evening Lake track and the GH Dino Mines track when this happens in the BLACK LABEL copy that uses Sunrise Spring and Molten Crater tracks for those levels. So, this tells me that the tracks are on the disc, it’s just that they didn’t have time to put them in the correct levels for whatever reason.

10:40 This one sounds so Spyro 1/2! I think Europe's Platinum version was a middle point between 1.0 and Greatest Hits. Most of the tracks are 1.0, but the Sorceress had a boss theme, not the Sunrise Springs one.

I remember being on KZbin and listening to a playlist years ago and hearing tracks that I hadn’t heard before. So wow, I have been playing the 1.0 version for the last 18 years, and I never realized it. I will say whether it's the Greatest Hits release or the original, Spyro 3 does have some memorable tracks (everyone who I have talked to has loved Fireworks Factory's music) but even as a child I felt frustrated by the reuse of tracks in so many levels and subsequent mini-games. I know that technically the first two games did have some track reuse (Toasty and Gnorc Cove are the same song) and in terms of the underlying beat there are similarities, but it still felt different. Probably by far my favorite song in terms of the feel, the dynamics of the lighter aspects to the harder bass hits (but existing in the hardest level) in Spyro is in my opinion, the underrated Twilight Harbor. I will say it makes me sad that Stewart Copeland didn't get more time to work on the music before it was pushed out the door, because even the Greatest Hits version soundtrack I've heard, I dislike it too, as it's just remixes and small reworks to already existing songs (Lost Fleet as the best example) is just Shelia's Alp theme reworked a bit, and I hate it. I think the only way it's 1.0 version is a bit more easy to stomach is we go to Lost Fleet well before we head to the Super Bonus stage. I feel that in regards to the series, 3 has the weakest soundtrack, and it's a near tie with 2 and 1, 1 I feel fits better within it's atmosphere, and 2 wins based on variety. Really cool video man, it's kind of like listening to Mr. Modez Pineapple with his Spyro remixes, blended in with a chunk of video game history with the behind the scenes/cut content stuff; but specifically revolving around music. Really cool to have found out about your channel today!

Most screen composers they got at the time weren't as familiar with production programs, so it makes sense they'd use samples to add effects. Distorted Reality may have just been available for them in the playstation studio (or whatever it's called) and they figured they'd get their money's worth out of it. Not sure if you found this in your research or if you still care, but I think I can back that up. Spyro 1, I wanna say, used only instruments a pretty nice synthesizer at the time could make. There's a short documentary on this game where he goes through his process on making themes for each level, and it does sound like he's a bit new to it too.Then I'm guessing Spyro 2 comes along, Distorted Reality is in now and using long samples wasn't controversial (Plus it was from a program for use). Also, i got to meet Copeland a couple years back and he admitted to being a Fake It Til You Make It kinda guy :) He's my favorite composer lol I really enjoyed these two videos. Thanks!

One detail you left out: the PAL Platinum does use the tracks as 1.0 but there is one exception. The Sorceress's Lair uses the Spike's Arena theme instead of Sunrise Springs. Perhaps it's because I'm used to the original but I don't like most of the Greatest Hits tracks. Evening Lake: The GH track actually sounds okay. Sorceress's Lair: I think Spike's Arena works better, but GH is definitely better than Sunrise Spring. Lost Fleet: I really don't like the GH track. It sounds too much like Sheila's theme. Enchanted Towers Skateboard: I prefer it with Desert Ruins. Dino Mines: GH is too peaceful. Crystal Islands: I could get used to the GH track. Haunted Tomb: Again, GH is too peaceful. Cloud Spires fits much better. Honey Speedway: I would need to hear more of GH to be sure. Mushroom Speedway: Again, it seems too peaceful. Country Speedway: I could get used to it.

I grew up with PAL Platinum, myself, so I'm used to it's own soundtrack. When I heard the GH tracks, I was really confused. While I understand that they were probably the original intended tracks, I'm not too big on the GH ones either. I actually always thought the reused themes in the Midnight Mountain stages really worked in a "coming full circle" manner, since they used themes from Sunrise Spring stages, specifically. As a side note, I personally hope Reignited allows one to choose if they want the original/Platinum soundtrack or the GH soundtrack. Or even better, choose what theme you want for each stage.

Nah, the Enchanted Towers thing had to have been a glitch with the fact that Sgt. Byrd's level overlaps with the actual level, and he has to pick up the same gems/items that Spyro can. Hence it can't just be a replica level. So the "skate park theme" was the music that was going to play in the whole level from the beginning, but instead it only works in the skate park.

I also most definitely grew up with 1.0, and so those tracks did stay with me (though I can't remember if I experienced the Final Boss-track glich, I remember it being more menacing). Therefore, I really thing they did an excellent job taking the pre-existing tracks from other levels and reusing them to other fitting levels. Molten Crater fits really well to the intimidating Dino Mines (better than the proper one, imo), Cloud Spires is just a great track and is cool in Haunted Tomb (though the proper one's good too, a bit torn on that one), they also did take the best Speedway-track to use for them all (though it definitely lacked variation!). I also always associate Super Bonus Round with Lost Fleet - it just fits perfectly to the hazy feel of that level - and the Sheila's Alps-remix is not bad, it just doesn't really fit at all. The reused Skateboard-track is cool too. However, some of them definitely warranted a redo - Crystal Islands, Evening Lake and the Speedways, as I mentioned. All in all, I think they did a good job reusing tracks and capture the feel.

I couldn't tell what your implication of the Greatest Hits version is in this video, but I have black label versions of all three games with the intended soundtracks. I'm not sure why the misconception exists that only the Greatest Hits version corrected the soundtracks, but it's been driving me crazy for a decade now. There has to have been an unstated publication in-between the original release and the Greatest Hits. Or else a number of Greatest Hits versions were released under the black label. The only iteration on my copy is the Super Bonus World music playing over Lost Fleet, but otherwise, all the other post-1.0 tracks are intact. What confirmed my awareness of this oddity is that I found it jarring when the Desert Ruins theme played in the Enchanted Towers mini-games during my recent PS3 download play-through of the game, but also that I wasn't expecting Sheila's Alp to play during Lost Fleet in Reignited. I couldn't relate to either the 1.0 soundtrack or the Greatest Hits version.

Hope this response isn't too late to get to you but this is actually something I had not considered. Honestly, I came to the conclusion that the GH version fixed the missing/incorrect tracks from both all the places online that said that was the case as well as looking into it myself. The videos you see on screen during the comparisons are all gameplay from me, so the audio was like that when I played through. That said, I don't doubt at all that there was a 1.1 version released after the game's initial release and before the GH version hit shelves, and this might also explain why I remember getting spyro 3 a year after it's release and it having all the tracks in the game.

I hate what they did here in the NTSC original version of Spyro 3, reusing the Sunrise Springs homeworld theme for the Sorceress battle music, it doesn't sound like battle music at all, in the original PAL version, they reuse Spike's battle theme for the Sorceress battle, that is battle music and makes more sense, in the Greatest Hits version, they fixed the Sorceress' battle theme, also, the Greatest Hits version got updated with a few more bug fixes for the Collector's Edition Boxset of The Original Spyro Trilogy, I got that boxset currently, I got it differently and more lucky, though I need to fix it a bit since Spyro The Dragon's case is broken and Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage has a scratch that makes the second Speedway in Autumn Plains unplayable, well, I actually don't know if it is unplayable as I didn't wait for it to load since it was taking too long, and the cardboard box cover is ripped a bit, now, I don't wanna replace the first game's case unless I figure out how to get the spine cover out, I already figured out how to get the back cover and inside cover out, but still, I just need to fix it a bit, anyway, I got it for Christmas at a pawn shop for $30.00 brand new, the normal way to get the Collector's Edition Boxset is on Amazon either used for $100.00 or brand new for $500.00

Actually, in the PAL version, 'Sorcereress's Lair' has the same music as 'Spike's Arena'.

Makes me wonder if the trilogy is to be remade, will those missing tracks be brought back and remastered?

Here’s what I think is better for each level: Evening Lake -> Greatest Hits Sorceress -> PAL (Spike’s Arena) Lost Fleet -> Black Label Enchanted Towers Skatepark -> Either Dino Mines -> Black Label Crystal Islands -> Either Haunted Tomb -> Either Every Speedway -> Greatest Hits
@sweetwheatsy6 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. Though to me, Greatest Hits' Crystal Islands is a must, but yeah

It would be cool if lost fleet looks like a ice stage like in super bonus round.

Gotta say, I am just the tiniest bit disappointed in Copeland when I heard the Distorted Reality-samples; not for the percussions and SFX, those are implemented neatly, but the ambience for the hubworlds in Spyro 2 are essentially the Luminize-track cut up and altered to become the three tracks. He's chosen well, and the ambience fits greatly to the seasons, but I must admit I thought he composed the original thing himself. I know he's never been the biggest audio/synth-engineer, but still.

It would be cool to solve the mystery of the glitched music in Spyro 3. A video on KZbin made by StardustNova Archive shows that. It happened in my PAL Platinum version of Spyro 3 as well, after I completed the game (117%) and returned to the title screen. I can't recognise the music it plays after that.

What was that video called?

Cynn It sounds like the credits music...I'm not sure.
@Cynnamynnt6 жыл бұрын
It definitely DOES sound a bit like the credits music, but what's strange to me is it sounds like it slowed down. If this were a case of it being midi based, I could see that as the game wasn't able to play the track fast enough or something made it play slow, but iirc since Spyro 3 was disc based all the music files were just audio files, meaning something in the game would have had to have been built in in order to slow down audio which I find highly unlikely. That all said, I'm going to dig around the disc and see what I can find.

The version that Ive played throughout my life uses some of the same tracks for different levels, it seemed lazy, until I discovered other versions have more tracks? Its definitely the most interesting soundtrack for this alone! The super bonus level really disappointed me 😩
@ziegriforigin88698 жыл бұрын
Huh. SO according to this I own the 1.0 version. Is there a difference between PAL and NTSC versions?
@Cynnamynnt8 жыл бұрын
As far as 1.0 goes, the PAL and NTSC versions are virtually identical (considering neither can achieve 60/50fps). The NTSC 1.1 Greatest Hits version fixes all the missing music, but the PAL Platinum (the 1.1 released in EU) still has the issue of Evening Lake and the final boss playing the wrong music. It remains unfixed to this day on PAL versions. The 1.1 of PAL fixes the missing music otherwise, though.
@ziegriforigin88698 жыл бұрын
So the US 1.1 version would be the current best version to recommend to people who want to play it.
@Cynnamynnt8 жыл бұрын
Very much so. Not as many game breaking bugs, and all the music is where it should be.

I wonder why no one is questioning the unused track in Spyro 2 Idol Springs/Fractured Hills.
@RyanStorey12316 жыл бұрын
Probably because that was the only instance of reused music in that game. I'm thinking in that case, it was a deliberate choice.

Grown up playing the PAL 1.0 version by the looks of things lol I have to admit I always found Spyro 3's design to be lacking compared to the first two games. In Spyro 2 I used to like the whole 'level complete' display but the 3rd game just seemed dull in comparison. Don't get me wrong I love all the original games

It goes off of the greatest hits versions, which is good since imo those are the definative versions. An exception is that in Enchanted Towers they still used the Sgt. Bird music, but with a different, more sleepy arrangement.

Not a "holiday deadline" so much as to coincide with the real-world "year of the dragon". Any later would have been unacceptable, I guess. Apparently a rushed game is preferable to missing the deadline of your game's stupid naming choice.

Hot take: the Molten Crater theme fits Dino Mines *way* better than the Greatest Hits version. Whenever I play Dino Mines in Reignited, I mute the music and look up Molten Crater instead. Switch out all the others, but you’ll have to pry that one from my cold, dead hands.
