**I do not hate this game, and if you like it, I appreciate where you are coming from.** Some inaccuracies/clarifications in this vid below: Physics - There's nothing inherently wrong with the unreal engine. While some things are different (or worse), it is overall fun to optimize the movement in this game. Charging is still fast, collection is still satisfying. The devs clearly spent some time fine tuning this and I have to respect that, despite some flaws. Aesthetics - I used some incorrect terminology. For example, I said "hyper realisitic" to describe the environments when I should have said "stylized". I also used the term "cell shaded" to describe the the enemies, which is wrong, when I should have stuck with terms like "cartoonish" and "overly vibrant". I see many of you disagree that the art direction is clashing, which is fair. Also I said the spyro 3 baby dragons were great, but they did forget the sheep outfit dragon in frozen altars, which may seem like a small gripe but I think many spyro 3 fans remember that dragon quite fondly and were dissapointed by that. Music - I realize that you can change the music back to the original tracks if you don't like the new ones. That's great, but it doesn't take away from my criticism of the new soundtrack either. I will admit that the dynamic music when you charge is a great touch. And some remade songs are legitimately good too in the context of the game, they're not all worse. Release - I made it seem like toys for bob didn't want to release the 2nd and 3rd games, and that it was the fans that pressured them, when really the problem was Activision putting a hard release deadline on them in the first place. Toys for Bob, nor the fans, shouldn't be faulted for this. What "we" want to see - It is clear to me that I do not speak for every Spyro fan, nor can I definitively say what we as a community want out of a future release, I can only speak for myself on any of this. I am not trying to convince you guys to agree with me.

Thank you for the clarification post. I will leave the lion's share of my comments in its own thread, but honestly I love the (original) Spyro series and had so much hype and expectations for this Reignited version, and when I finally got my hands on it (Switch version) there was a nice amount of magic to be found... but I also felt the seams in the work. I felt the parts where they sacrificed the original to make it "better", and the parts where they just couldn't remake it faithfully, even with all the effort in the world. And I have to thank you EVER SO MUCH because I have been told countless times that Reignited is superior to the originals and when I disagree I get called out for "never liking anything new" and "always having to have a critique". I will end this here, as my rant comment should suffice, but it really feels good to know others see the differences.

Even the most well optimized games now are still so terrible compared to the average game back in the day. Nothing seems to do anything all that creative to improve image quality or performance now. It's either upscaling or a weird hybrid/combination of effects to changes things. Back in the PS3 days and earlier, devs would create entirely new techniques to do things so no 2 games were alike in the regard.

for those of us who played the original games lots as kids (and adults), little things like this stands out, especially the sounds. Still as it is tho, I'm glad these remakes exist. They were the reason for me finally buying a ps4 a few years ago.

The entire sound design for the Reignited Trilogy was a massive let-down for me. The soundtrack isn't as striking and whimsical (I gave it a chance, but ended up switching to the the old soundtrack fairly quickly), the enemies that had such instantly recognisable cries getting replaced with generic grunts, the campy voice acting has gone, even the most satisfying part: the sound when a gem hits Spyro was so iconic in the originals(in 2 & 3 at least) and it just doesn't live up. The visuals, to me, are great and have added new vibes to some area, the controls and wonky as heck and don't feel anything like any of the originals, but the charm that oozed from the sound design in the originals is long gone with the remakes.

@@Bracketmeister The entire audio system is a letdown. There's no unique sound engineering (beyond hard-ground and grass) for Spyro's feet interacting with certain surfaces in Reignited, something the entire OG trilogy had top tier attention to (overlooked) detail with. The visuals are also a huge letdown when you actually sit down, stop moving, and analyze it and compare (beyond _"HD and more stuff!"_ ) to the original series - Reignited goes for this overly cartoony, clay-like, toybox-esque (hello Skylanders influence) artstyle, which is a direct contradiction to the original trilogy's philosophy that purposely aimed for a middle-ground between cartoony and realism with edge. All rid away to watered down heavily in the remake. Don't get me started on numerous botched redesigns, numerous botched other-media references, numerous censorship, false/incomplete classic soundtrack (y'all been deceived for over half a decade), botched characterizations, botched voiced-lines, botched mini-games, removal of lines, etc. (Dead Space remake is guilty of these sentiments too. I disprove both these remakes.) All these remakes keep missing the point and making series more childish than they were and intended to be. It had been years since I'd touched the ogs, so during my initial playthrough I was not nearly as critical as I am now. Now I always switch the music back to the original tracks. I do the bare minimum in the flying levels because something about the inertia in Reignited just feels so off to me that it's sapped all the fun out of those parts. The skateboarding is like that too, though I've never been able to put words to why it felt so wrong so... Thank you for that haha. I've truthfully never fully completed the third games for those reasons. Anyway, great analysis as always, man. It really is a shame we missed out on what could have been, even if the games we did get are still fun in their own way.

The character designs also greatly suffer from an uncanny feeling, like you said. To me, it doesn't look like spyro characters, it looks like Toys For Bob characters. I feel like a big part of the optimization problem is that this game is constantly sending data to Epic Games servers even though it's a single-player only game. I know this because if you try to run this game on linux you have to go into the game's files and delete the line that has the address it's sending the data to so that it will simply decide there isn't a location instead of throwing an invalid location exception and crashing the game.

The midnight blue sky contrasts super well with the green acid and the sandy textures. However, in RT, the skies are purple and foggy, thereby not capturing the nautical aesthetic the original possesses.

So, i'm thankful the Crash remakes sorta brought back platformers, but one thing it did is just generalize how they should look as well, the Aesthetic and general look and design philosophy between the two sets of remakes is nigh indistinguishable, which is just wrong when you look at the originals. A good and easy way to see that they don't have a different artstyle or stylization is Nitro Fueled's Spyro Track, because it fits right in with the rest of the game, which is good for the game, the styles don't clash, but given it's a different series it should at least look a bit different.

The Spyro Reignited Trilogy is to the original Spyro the Dragon trilogy what Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I (and II) was to the original Sonic the Hedgehog 1990s era trilogy. Good games in their own right (I thought Sonic 4 was shit personally!) but they lack the winning formula which made the originals such an enjoyable yet magical experience. Just like how the Sonic the Hedgehog fans wanted a sequel to be more in line with what later became Sonic Mania, a lot of original Spyro the Dragon trilogy fans also wanted and still want a game which respects, understands and improves on what made the original games so enjoyable. The Ignited games are not bad games in and of themselves, they really arent! They just just lack the magic of what the originals had and still have from the simplistic movement physics to the skyboxes to the NPC character designs. They tinkered too much in areas and made it look, sound and feel too different from the original trilogy and as a result strayed too far from the winning formula.

Despite its issues, I appreciate the reignited trilogy compared to other recent "remakes". Other than the issues and changes presented in this video, Toys For Bob tried to keep the experience of the whole trilogy as close as possible to the originals without really changing much in terms of the story or characterization. On top of that, the entire trilogy is purchasable for less than the cost of a single new AAA game. Other remakes will needlessly change characters or the story for no real reason and strip out setpieces or moments to resell to you as DLC. The reignited trilogy (as well as the N Sane trilogy for Crash) give you all 3 games with nothing taken out. For me these two trilogy remakes set a new standard for remaking older titles that I wish other companies followed suit for.

To me it comes down to the fact that Activision rushed them to release it, when it needed so much more time. The reason why they never “talked about timelines/development” is that they’d basically be whistleblowing how mistreated they were as a studio if they did so. Game didn’t start development until late 2017, which is just an absolute joke. It’s as if they needed to CONFIRM that N. Sane Trilogy was going to be successful, as if there was any chance it wasn’t. Development should have started at the same time as N. Sane Trilogy, as it needed more time than Crash.

I'm with you on pretty much everything. It feels like all I hear for Reignited is unqualified praise, but so many little things were disappointing for me. Spyro used to have a way of "nudging" past obstacles, like if you glided past the edge of a wall, it would just shift you a little and let you keep gliding. But in Reignited, you just bonk right into the wall and plummet. Certain obstacles and enemies are easier or harder than they should be because they’re just wired a little wrong. And it’s not uniform, either. Spyro 1 works just fine for me and I love the dragon designs so much that I actually prefer the Reignited version, and I like the skill points they added. But then there’s Year of the Dragon, and God, what happened? And why in the world hasn’t it been fixed yet? It’s 2024, and Lost Fleet’s skateboarding race still doesn’t count half your laps. That skill point is a nightmare to get not because it’s technically difficult, but because the glitches sabotage you constantly and the lag gets unbearable. YotD was my favorite of the original trilogy, but I can’t even go back to it in Reignited. It just makes me sad. I do like that they fixed Agent 9’s sections, though. Those were painful in the original.

At the end of the video, you acknowledge your nostalgia and your overall bias. Before in the video, you also mention you are a Spyro speedrunner. That should've been disclosed in the beginning. Much of your "opinions" are blinded by such positions. An introduction would’ve been nice to start. To share a bit about me, I’m an indie game developer of four years. I’m currently working on a project heavily inspired by Spyro’s Reignited Trilogy, down the graphics and general game design. I’ve also written a research paper about the 3d platformer genre, in addition to extensively researching it. I grew up with the Skylanders series but love the Reignited Trilogy as well. I am not a speed runner nor did I grow up with PS1 Spyro. I can agree that "more time in the oven" would've been good, but split screen and co-op go against the game's design and overall developer intent. The game wasn't made for multiplayer. Neither the original nor the reignited version. If it was shoe-horned in, that'd be bad, right? The game's design is focused on single-player systems, like most games in the 3d platformer collect-a-thon genre. Multiplayer would be an aspect to bring into the level design. Custom maps would be awesome, but is that really in Spyro's realm here? Would mods not satisfy your recommendations thus far? The amount of time it'd take to create a user-facing product for map creation with terrain tools and whatnot.. scope's a big one here. Being able to switch to the original graphics would be interesting, I agree. Since I didn't make the game, I can't tell you a concrete objection to the feature. That said, we live in a different era. Imitation and inspiration are what Toys for Bob did, not just imitation. I think you’d appreciate the original PS1 graphics compared to an imitation of them. You frequently say "But that's my opinion" which could’ve led to more objective critiques. To give credit where it's due, you mention the physics issues (agree with that one) and some other things (which I’ll get into). I enjoy the character designs and think they mostly fit the stylized environment. I say mostly as some textures could’ve been more stylized. Would you say Spyro is too stylized compared to the environment? I wonder if this is a texturing difference thing or general art direction. The issue of the environment obstructing gems should be solved by making gems more noticeable imo. The grass being the way it is, fluffy in the traditional stylized way it is, adds to that look I enjoy so much. Load times are a complicated problem, but in short, you can go the visually appealing route or the “quick” route. There can be a balance, but there’s still a decision. I can have pop-in or I can be extra sure stuff looks good to the player before they see it. Due to the game focusing on visuals, I think they hit a good mark. I’m sure more optimizations could be made, again with more time, big I digress. To the point of Spyro’s target audience being older, the 3d platformer collect-a-thon was indeed a big thing in the early 2000s. Those people are older, but the general focus and audience for that genre is still younger fans. Those first Spyro games appealed to that younger audience, in addition to older ones, but games need a “target”. The console Spyro games after the first three games were a response to that aging audience and the growing edginess of the 2010s. To your point of the community “wanting to create [their] own levels and challenges”, I’d beg to differ until given proof otherwise. Just because you do doesn’t mean most do. Based the the reviews on Steam and KZbin that I’ve scoured, I didn’t get that impression. Most wanted the camera, physics, and some movement improved.

Great vid Dayo! Greater technical horsepower encourages a mindset whereby "more is best". The original trilogy is blessed with an artistic direction that made the most of limited hardware, which comes through in limited but well chosen colours and character designs. In comparison, Reignited just adds everything. More details, more colours, lights, textures, physics effects, and gloss with little consideration for what is actually necessary. The result is an aesthetic that feels disfigured by abundance; it's particularly noticeable in the characters and "Instagram filter" colour palettes. Also, Elora's giant black pupils are horrifying.

I really enjoyed Reignited, but I agree with basically all of your points. Once I hit that 337%, I had a hard time coming back to it. Reignited just doesn't have the same staying power as the original PS trilogy. It is a shame TFB had to rush this thing. Lots of potential to optimize what they made and further expand the world with DLC.

One of the most biggest problems I had with the remake was the controls. At first I was like "Oh, it's just taking the controls from the third game and implanting them to the previous games", but it's not even that! As turning while charging/gliding was way to slow! And another thing I noticed (can't remember if the original was like this or not) but in the 2nd game, when I was playing the remake, I decided to go to Elora to teleport in front of a portal to get a talisman I didn't have yet. Instead, she sent me to a level I already fully completed. Also, this might be just me, but it bugs me whenever people say how the best part of the remake was how beautiful it is. Yeah, maybe from afar. But on a few levels (At least in the 2nd and 3rd game) , you can clearly see parts where it doesn't have much of any 'swaying grass' and all that is underneath is just a green ground with no textures. It's literally like you just pull up Microsoft paint, fill the entire screen with a single green color, and call that 'grass'. I know people like Reignited Trilogy, but I will always go back to the original trilogy.

I don't agree with all your points, and that's okay. I still really enjoyed hearing your perspective here. I had limited experience with the classic Spyro games as a kid, but I look back on my time with Spyro and Spyro 3 very fondly. Never did get to play the original Spyro 2. I loved my time with the Reignited Trilogy, and could even see myself playing through it multiple times, eventually. Spyro is a series that I wanna keep coming back to, for sure. I played the remake trilogy way after release, so the game had been patched up by the time I got to it, which was nice. I didn't experience any noticeable bugs, or issues, when I played it, and I played the PC port version on Steam. All that said, I would love to play the original games, as well. I definitely feel like there is room for both to exist and be enjoyed. I'll have to look into the best way to get into the originals.

You're completely right and you should say it. The moment I saw how they trashed the obvious igneous rock with very visible igneous rock pores in idol springs I realized this remake was not gonna be good. Overall the texture work is definitely what I take the most issue with. All that elaborate stonemasonry replaced with haphazard cobblestone bricks, that was like the most unique feature of the original games' art style! And that's to say nothing of their absolute disregard for the meticulous color theory. It was like they never even read the gamasutra article...

I was excited to play Reignited Trilogy when it came out. I immediately changed from the "Dynamic Soundtrack" back to the original. The load times where annoying (especially when you die), giving me flashbacks to Enter the Dragonfly on PS2; the fidget buttons were a nice addition that made them a little more bearable. Some of the graphic and sound design choices I didn't care for, but there were some additions that I did enjoy (e.g. the bonus whirlwind after you defeat the sorceress). I replay the Spyro trilogy ever year and I still use my PS1 versions to do so; now I only touch Reignited if I'm away from my PS2.

I'm not a glitch hunter, but in my experience, Reignighted runs a much tighter ship when in comes to not having exploits. (Possibly because they can patch them with software updates.) Maybe too tight, with all the invisible walls. (and I don't mean the forcefeilds in Stone Hill and Cliff Town.)

the rankings of enjoyment i find from each Spyro game is 3, 2 then 1. Reignited feels like the devs spent more love and time in remaking 1 the most, then 3 feels like the most rushed and they never bothered flushing out many of the bugs, if at all.

Said very well my friend. Bottom line is... -Lack of being true to the original's authenticity... -Over-tweaking and adding too many new artistic details and/or artistic liberties. -Rushed development that led to glitches -Recycled visuals from Fortnite that honestly look horrible and match in no way the cartoony vibe of PS1 Spyro. -Terrible game architecture that in no way recreates the original's technical marvels, like NO FADE DURING LEVEL ENTRIES IN SPYRO 1..... PS1 did it, PS4 couldn't do it? Excuses.

Yeeeeah, kind of got the feeling that everything was just very slightly off. I did buy the game after everything had been patched so I didn't have any technical issues. Since I no longer have my PS2, it did scratch that itch to replay it again with updated graphics. Problem is, I probably beat each Spyro game at least 50 times growing up. I may have less time now as an adult, but I did not feel the need to replay Reignited.

I repeatedly had issues with YotD Reignited crashing my entire computer earlier this year while trying to get all achievement completion on Steam. It was attempting to verify my purchase at the Epic Game Store instead of Steam, for some reason, and getting so confused by what it was doing that my PC would BSOD. Blocking the EGS authentication servers in my HOSTS file fixed it permanently but... I shouldn't have to do that for a modern game release. Reignited could've been good remake if it had a few more months in the oven, and the fact that the quality slowly falls off a cliff from 1 to 2 to 3 is pretty solid proof that it was an undercooked release. Still wouldn't have been the same as the OGs, but the Crash N. Sane remakes are great (I regularly play both versions of that trilogy) despite their little quirks and differences.

If you lock the framerate to 120 on the nvidia control panel and set it to unlimited in-game it won't have many of these bugs at 120 fps. I have no idea what they did to make it break. I generaly have no issue with any of the art at least in the first game, it's just the locked FOV, the uneven vertical and horizontal sensitivities when using a mouse and the high fps problems that really bugged me.

Dayo I love you but it's hilarious that you're pleading to Toys For Bob to "do better" when this remake is 6 years old. I played both the original Spyro and Reignited for the first time a few years ago, and with no nostalgic attachment I enjoyed the remake fine (aside from the unforgivable 60fps issues at 1:27). Of course it was made for cheap, but as far as cheap remakes go I feel like Spyro is very adequate (though I have yet to try 2 and 3). It's way better than what Ratchet & Clank got.

I think the worst part about the game's aesthetic changes are that they're so close to being there, the *models* are all fine (everything from the portals to the shrubs, buildings, even the gems). The music is so close to being right too, they just needed to recreate the original instruments as close as possible with higher quality, that's it. Naturally the game also needs a few toggles for 'original graphics', 'original music' etc for posterity. But it's something like 80-90% the way there.

A common defense of ANY remake of an old game is "well it's new so of course it MUST be different to stay fresh.... for some reason". Funny, considering this trilogy largely preserves all the designs from the original, INCLUDING SPYRO HIMSELF. So many characters look pretty much the same, and the defenders of new changes being good are silent. And you apparently did not read the super secret 4chan leak. T4B were super rushed by Activision to release all 3 super fast, and so 2 and 3 were super un-baked. Activision is responsible for most of the game's problems. Sheila's new wig and Shrek gnorks and censored guns? Those are entirely on Toys 4 Bob. I just hope that modders will fix the Sheila wig. And Shrek gnorcs. And guns. And I hope Spyro 4 will have an option to disable Sheila's wig, if she is included.

That's a very interesting analysis, given your experience with the original games, I totally understand where you're coming from on all of them. I've played the Reignited Trilogy on PS4 and enjoyed myself a lot, because at its core, it's still the three classic Spyro games, but there are certainly a lot of things that didn't quite translate well into this new version in terms of visuals and handling. In addition, the French version I've played in was retranslated and redubbed, it's a very good dub, but some of the new names and lines don't quite have the charm of the original versions. And yes, that Fortnite dance is a total crime. That said, through all of that, I think it's nice that younger players can experience these games in some capacity. Would've been even better if they did something like the MediEvil Remake (Which also lost some visual appeal) by having the original versions playable as a bonus feature, but alas...

There are a Lot of things I do genuinely enjoy about reignited. I like the art style, I like seeing how tfb interpreted the different characters and worlds and everything from low poly to high detail. But there are a lot of things I *really* dislike that stop me from replaying it as much as I replayed the originals. The weird purple haze over a lot of levels is really distracting, spyro's movement feels Weird, especially if you're supercharging, swimming, flying.... etc. There's a lot of sound effects that I dislike (changing some iconic enemy noises and NPC voices, which makes them less charming and interesting). I still have yet to go for 120 and 100 in 1 and 2 because I *hate* the flight physics so bad I just dont want to do flight levels im less familiar with (I never did full completion on either in the originals either). I got 117 in reignited 3 but that's because I was Determined to at least fully complete my favorite. I probably will never do that again though. Some of those side missions that I struggled with a little in OG were way harder and more tedious to complete in reignited. Overall I dont think it's a terrible remaster remake whatever but it *definitely* doesnt live up to the originals Edit: I actually went back and looked and I did in fact 100% reignited 2..... i forgot apparently LMAO
