My personal headcanon as to the relationship between male and female dragons is that they are within reach of each other, but intentionally remain segregated as part of their culture. Not out of fear or mistrust but just as a way of life. Male dragons when hatched remain with the ales to be raised, while females return to wherever the other females are living to be raised by them. Dragons age more slowly than humans, so let's say every other egg cycle, a time period of 24 years, hatched female dragons finally become fertile, return to the males, partake in the "sacred ritual", lay their eggs, they leave the eggs to be protected by the males, and when they hatch they are sorted by gender. This would still happen every 12 years, just in different cycles. There's already 12 year old dragons when the new dragons hatch, so in 12 years time they reach 24 years old. It could make sense like this: Male dragons and Female dragons might be very different in personality. Male dragons don't require female role models and female dragons don't require male role models, so they are raised by the dragons that are more like themselves. The real confusion comes from Spyro himself. In the original trilogy, Spyro seems to be the only dragon of his generation. If you don't count the other games and only focus on the original trilogy, it makes you wonder what happened to cause this. Was he the only male dragon born of his generation? Was he the ONLY dragon born of his generation? Even if you take later games into account, it seems as though other dragons his age are few and far between. It's almost as though something extreme happened.

Fun fact: The Legend of Spyro Trilogy was originally going to have a female water dragon as one of the four guardians along with Ignitus, Volteer, and Terrador. But she was switched into a male ice dragon named Cyril. I really do hope Spyro 4 has Cynder in it and they don't scramble her character into mush.

I remember as a kid reading a dragon book claiming that females are rarer than males, and get special treatment (and heavy amounts of protection to ensure they reach adulthood) as a result. That would be interesting if they incorporated that idea into Spyro.

I noticed in the game that it's implied that the male dragons seem to be the ones raising the eggs and hatchlings. So maybe they're like cassowaries and emus where the female dragons lay the eggs and go back to doing whatever it is that they do, and the males are the ones who raise the young.

I've read a dragoness book that explained the males care for the eggs and babies like some birds, but to the extreme. That females were very seclusive, dangerous, and powerful. This one also said they take maidens for companionship but that can be ignored for comparison purposes.

The real reason. Money. They didn't have enough money. There were about 5 official voice actors for the original and none of them were female, which is why the fairies didn't talk. The reason they weren't in the Reignited was to stay faithful to the original and not change to much. Personally, I would rather them just ignore the fact that there were no females and just have a character make a joke about it. There were females, you just didn't see them.

Since you brought this up. Here's my goofy headcanon. When sorceress exiles the dragons, she intentionally splits the males and females. I guess the eggs were one of the things the male dragons were able to salvage? Here's my elevator pitch for Spyro "4". The professor has finally achieve something he always wanted to do from his portal studies: unifying all the worlds from the Dragon Realms, Avalar, and the forgotten realms. His dream to build this hub where each world's inhabitant work with each other and develop new and exciting stuff that will benefit all and also perhaps find undiscovered realms, (this is where the female dragons come in). Meanwhile, Sorceress's academy is in shambles. There's chaos due to the magic drought and Sorceress's death. This prompts a new headmaster who decides to exploit the situation and uses the academy to get back at Spyro and the rebels, uses sorceress's unethical magic techniques of squeezing magic out of a living creature, and conquer the other realms for the sake of regaining magic.

To throw it out there, here's a bit of info from the Spyro 3 manual: "Every twelve years, the Dragon Kingdom celebrates its most important event: the "Year of the Dragon" Festival. Fairies deliver a new batch of dragon eggs and dragons come from all around to dance and feast until everyone drops from...eggshaustion." "The Year of the Dragon is upon us again and the fairies have brought 150 eggs to the Dragon Worlds. However, unbeknownst to the celebrating dragons, a sinister plot is about to unfold..." In the context of Spyro 3, the fairies bring dragon eggs for the adult dragons to take care of, obviously the eggs have to come from somewhere. Also in Spyro 2 Ripto very clearly lived around dragons going by his reaction at the start of the game, which is also the reason why Elora and friends ended up asking Spyro for help. With how Spyro 2 and 3 frame it, dragons do exist in areas outside of the dragon realms, and that likely includes female dragons.

I dont think there are a forced separation between Dragons. I believe we have only explored the "industrial area" of the dragon world because each world that we visited in the spyro universe was responsible for producing a specific resource. Aside from the agent nine worlds but then we didnt see any dragons there. If we would have been shown dragon shores it would have ruled this out because that was a vacation world for the dragons.

Personally I didn't feel that Naughty Dog or Insomniac Games really put much effort into their female characters until about the 2nd Spyro and Crash games. For Crash 1 the only female character that showed up was Tauna whose main role is just to be the damsel in distress, with her secondary role being the prize girl at the end of every primary bonus level. And while Spyro 1 wasn't quite as degrading, the only female characters in Spyro 1 that I can think of are the fairies whose only roles seemed to involve either keeping Spyro pointed in the right direction, protecting him from falling, or giving him magic powers. They did got more and more inclusive and better at writing female characters in their games, but for whatever reason they just didn't really bother so much with their first platformer games on the PS1.

I would like to believe that that male and female dragons keep themselves separate not just for their protect from those who wish to do evil by using their magic but to also protect themselves from their own emotions. The dragon elders always seem calm despite their situation. As if they wre keeping their emotions in check. From the Legend of Spyro, the stronger the emotion is, the stronger the magic is. Imagine if all the dragons of both genders were acting on emotions to woo and compete against one another to claim as a mate, the magic from the emotions would be catastrophic, throwing all out of balance. The Elders practice and meditate to control their emotions but that alone isn't enough. So meditation and separation was decided. All to prevent any threats to the balance. Even sacrificing all attachments for the opposite sex.

Not sure if you ever saw but the manual for the 3rd game did have an explanation for where the dragon eggs came from. Like every year of the dragon that comes up, fairies deliver a new batch of dragon eggs. Now it's never explained where EXACTLY the fairies get their eggs from so maybe it's possible they get them from another realm inhabited by female dragons and the manual also states that dragons come from all around the world to dance and feast during the celebration of the year of the dragon, maybe the females do come to the dragon kingdom every once in a while, though that really does feel like something that should be shown off for once.

I like Reignited Trilogy Spyro best and I hope we get to see Flame and Ember getting a much bigger role than they did in the Original Spyro games in the new Spyro 4 and I would love to see The Sorcerer and his Shadow Realms he's kept us Spyro and the others waiting for far too long we know he's still out there waiting and he's also Spyro's darker counterpart. I also ship Spyro and Ember and Flame and Ember too. I would also love to see Wyverns in The new Spyro games multiple headed Dragons and multiple tailed dragons sea dragons Shadow Dragons Water Dragons and others I also want Dark Spyro to get a much needed bigger role than the others he got too.

When I first played these on the Playstation 1 I just thought Spyro and the Elder Male dragons we see was all that was left of the Dragons. As such the eggs that were stolen in Year of the Dragon were their last clutch of eggs and their last chance to have breeding pairs.

I would imagine that all of the female dragons would have gone to a hidden world and they would all be living their lives and also preparing for the future of dragon civilization and learning and studying their research and getting stronger and smarter and faster but I would also imagine that they would learn teleportation with their own kind of magic but in doing so would require the strength of spirit gem crystals and not only would they have known where to find them but by also having the advantage to create their own spirit gem crystals and that those crystals would be much more advanced for future dragon population.

My idea from what the classic games gave, female adult Dragons seperate themselves from which the men control in the Dragon Lands, not because of any segregation, but for their survival. Two big events can happen, being the copulation and egg laying-sitting, when the men and women meet. Any youths born are firstly taught by the men, and when the females mature, are taken to their side of the Dragon Lands. The males take care of the young for the purpose of both teaching them and being their protectors, simply for the usual male aspects. Most survival tactics consist of the females to survive with a few men.

When I grew up I came to wonder about this part. Seeing only male dragons was weird and not even a single female dragon, and until A Hero's Tail we could see some female dragons. And why they don't appear, it can be for many reasons like they living separately away from males, something like in The Smurfs and the Hidden Village where males and females live away in their own society, or something more... sinester. A theory I have, is that at some point, the male dragons had to travel away, leaving the females behind in their original home, but something happened that ended with the males or females ending far away, either be by some natural cause or by an external reason (like the Sorceress). I like your theories that female dragons decided to leave the male dragons by their careless behavoir with the eggs, and the one where they were vanished away by the Sorceress (like one of my other theories) But I expect that, maybe in the new Spyro game they can appear, I always thought that present female dragons would give a good variety to the dragonkind, and that goes too with showing more young/kid dragons. That also would be good if they want to add the young female dragons Ember and Cynder. Great video! This really made me think much more about an unexistent thing in the game to indulge deeper into the lore.

I very recently began replaying the remastered for fun, when I suddenly noticed this. Being the weirdo I am when it comes to headcanons, I supposed they were hermaphrodite type animals like some slugs, worms, fish and plants are, and while they appeared male/mascualine, they might still be able to reproduce without an issue. I had no idea there were canon females presented in later non-insomniac games at all, and that possibly kills the headcanon though aahahaha.... either way i hope they had a good reason cause it comes off as quite weird to exclude females as a Whole :/ (hence the need to explain it away cleverly... xD)

The only problem with the hermaphrodite theory is that there are female dragons that hatch from eggs in the third game. I think female dragons are more nomadic warrior, explorer-hunter types and the males are the ones who run the primary industries as well as hatch and raise the eggs after they are laid. We see this behavior in many bird species where dad is the one who raises the hatchlings and mom tends to wander around more often.

You know it is very interesting to think, if Spyro 3: Year of The Dragon showed us that there can be dragon eggs. Then how do they get the eggs if there are no female dragons? How come we've never seen one dragon who was a girl? A Hero's Tails and The Legend of Spyro Trilogy games do not count.

The devs never bothered about that subject cuz it was a game for kids in the 90s and the anti gaming girl culture was at its peek. The logic was simple if theres any girl its gonna be boring so there will be no sales for the game. I hope a proper explanation and introduction of the female dragons in the next Spyro game for the sake of the franchise.

There was no "anti-girl gaming culture", simply the assumption that most girls didn't play games - which of course changed as time went on. Female dragons would have meant hiring more voice actors which would have been costly.

Kids used to hate female characters in the 90s that later changed in late 90s and 2000s when the oversexualized female characters started to appear cuz you know those kids grew up. I really hate when devs make their female characters in that way and that ruins the character completely for example we have Tawna from Crash that got cut from most of the games(replaced by a dumb version of her called Coco) or Angela Cross from R&C that was literally erased from the franchise(with only one mention in some game).

Me too. The female dragons haven't appeared in the original trilogy of Spyro the Dragon series. So why not Activision should add the female dragons in a brand new Spyro the Dragon game: "Spyro 4" which is a real sequel to the original trilogy of Spyro the Dragon series to be introduced so we could see where the female dragons have been after the female dragons were banished along side with the male dragons to the two different several magical worlds from the Forgotten World by the Sorceress in their backstory? If the adult female dragons will be introduced in Spyro 4 as a brand new Spyro the Dragon 2021 game, I bet it'll be an only young 12 year old female dragon: a re-imagined character from "The Legend of Spyro the reboot trilogy of Spyro's origin story (2006 to 2008)": Cynder with her re-imagined design made by Nicholas Kole's fanart will be in Spyro 4. I know that Cynder has her dark past in her original origin story in The Legend of Spyro series. I could imagine that it'll be a re-imagined origin story of Cynder when she lives with the adult female dragons in another side of the magical world for 12 years passed in Spyro 4, just like Spyro lives with the adult male dragons in the Dragon World for 12 years passed. And I could imagine that Cynder will have her companion/ best friend: a brand new character of Spyro the Dragon series: a fanart of Nicholas Kole's: Sting the Wasp, just like Spyro has his companion/ best friend: Sparx the Dragonfly. 🙂 I don't know yet. Just some of my thoughts and theary for the female dragons will be in Spyro 4 as a brand new game which is a real sequel to the original trilogy of Spyro the Dragon series. It's misogyny, dude, no other reason. Insomniac never considered female dragons because they were an all make dev team and Toys For Bob probably felt like they couldn't change too much without fan rage. I'm happy to know someone on the dev tram came up with the idea but the fact that they never went through with it, says a lot about both companies. That said, there were female hatchlings in the original trilogy, though there weren't any signifiers aside from what appeared to be, random naming conventions. Like, the male dragons all got dragonish sounding names but the females get basic names like "Jacky," c'mon.

It wasn't misogyny, it was budget and graphics limitations. Nearly all the dragons unlocked in the first game are uniform - I imagine this was due to time constraints. Sure, maybe they could've given some of the dragons a more feminine shape or a female voice actress but voice actors require money whoever was financially backing Insomniac didn't want to risk lost investment because "gotta be inclusive!" Games are expensive to make and in the '90s there was an assumption that girls simply weren't as into video games as boys were - so they reasoned that marketing to them wouldn't have been beneficial. "Weren't any signifiers" some of the female baby dragons had bows in their heads. The model variety for the baby dragons in the remake was surprisingly limited but I'm guessing they had time constraints and weren't able to add more.

@@AmieEss excuse me? How hard is it to put eyelashes on the model, give them a female voice actress or color them "feminine" colors? Hell, they could've had all the desert dragons be huge, bulking and female as one hell of a juxtaposition but noooo, let's give Clancy Brown all of the voice lines instead. (Don't get me wrong, I love Clancy but there was no excuse for how much he got to voice. No excuse. Also, as sexist as this is, female VA's are cheaper so it can't be budget that's the problem.) Also, how does budget this excuse Toys For Bob's attempt at the game? Again, aside from sticking with tradition out of fear of fan rage, they don't have the same excuse as insomniac. They clearly had the budget to hire all of these different VA's and not one of them are female. Not. Even. One. As for the signifiers: yes, some had bows but I remember quite a few just had he name and that was it.

Anyone who throws around the term misogyny without proof is a misandrist. There are other logical reasons why female dragons weren't present in the first three Spyro games.

I would be cool if theres actually a female dragon civilization, it's a civilization of female WARRIOR dragons, after being exiled imagine they decided to live on they're own independently and decide to get strong so some scenario like this doesn't happen again, kinda like the gerudo town from zelda but instead of prohibiting the path to male dragons instead just be amazed that there's actually a male dragon civilization (Edit) also imagine cynder being introduced as a leader to this civilization due idk her parents died at a young age while she was still the same age as spyro and had to take over to protect them idk due to the family she came from is a very special gifted and powerful one, cuz idk I havent seen a black dragon in reignited
