Spyro - The Menace of Malefor

Greetings, Historians! Today I'll be quickly going over some thoughts on the Dark Master, Malefor, and why to some along with myself he's one of the most menacing villains in the Legend of Spyro.

I still get goosebumps for when malefor was officially revealed in the eternal night by the chronicler! The whole backstory was really scary and honestly quite tragic too.

I think the most evil thing Malefor could do if he made a return would be to take away the subtitles so that we'd have no idea what the hell he's saying

I think he works best as the unknown dark possiblity that spyro could be and how simple it would be to be that so emencely powerful you are the big bad behind the big bass, the kind of reason ripto fears dragons and the sorceress hates them

It's been stated in the Spyro Wiki that Malefor is the personification of one of the seven deadly sins: Lust. This implies how alluring he is in both speech and power, drawing in those who seek power for their own selfish desires.

Here's my take on why Malefor feels different in Dawn of the Dragon (besides the voice): Malefor is the Voldemort to Spyro's Harry Potter, the ultimate threat that our hero must overcome to complete his hero's journey. Like Voldemort, the hero's mentors were too afraid to even speak his name and he held the world in great fear for many years before and during the events of the story. However, like Voldemort, Malefor is also a person, just twisted by his inner darkness. If things had gone differently, Spyro could have easily become the next Dark Master himself. By the time of Dawn of the Dragon, Malefor isn't a force to be feared, but an actual person Spyro could go and defeat, with the help of his friends, of course. The reason his menace disappears, to me at least, is because Spyro isn't afraid to face Malefor, thus that menace Malefor has doesn't hold any power over the heroic purple dragon. TLDR Malefor loses his menace because Spyro has grown as a hero to the point that he doesn't fear Malefor anymore.

My theory is his voice became layered when he was with the spirits in the Well of Souls, he merged with a few but he was able to endure and be unphased mentally & physically as he was able to eventually come back in the physical realm but the other spirits except the 2 he merged with, who couldn't get out.

Malefor is (if not one of) the most menacing villain in the SpyroVerse. I mean he is more evil and cruel than others like The Sorceress or Strykore. His actions, thoughts and methods are really twisted as himself. Taking list of what he did, he basically did almost every horrible thing, since declare war to his kind to send to destroy unhatched eggs and use one to corrupt and freed him, leaving the dragon with a severe PTSD and permanent markings of the corruption. I wanna point out his voice, yeah sounds so awkward that even makes you laugh at how distorted it is, but in lore, that distortion may be related to his corruption, as his that voice was not only his, also of many more, such as other damned souls. The biggest mystery that is not told is, why? Why Malefor, who in the words of the guardians and the Chronicler was just like Spyro, who is someone pure, brave, and innocent; would end up seduced by the darkness? Knowing Spyro, he is someone heroic, brave, pacifist, relaxed, innocent, confident and a bit cocky, but still thinks in the others first. So, Malefor would be the same, maybe with one of two qualities but still a humble hero. But what would have caused him to turn into the dark side? The answer would be power, something common and understandable, but I feel there is something else to see... Great video! I love this videos with intrigant topics revolving mysteries and facts about Spyro. And with Malefor nonetheless. Truly a menacing and scary villain.

I always though about few things, what pushed Malefor into path he took, and with that another question, who imprisoned him into space gate of convexity, why purple dragons have ability to turn dark form, Spyro itself turned for a moment twice, do well of souls has soaked him in dark form, or he had it from born, we seen it comes with extreme emotions, sadness, despair, then purple dragon turn side and become menace, do Chronicler (whatever he called before become one) was a mentor for Malefor, like Ignitus for Spyro? maybe death Malefor's mentor has pushed him to this path,

I get the feeling that Vitiate's introduction in SWTOR was what they were trying to do with Malefor. Introduce him as a menace that you cannot really grasp or wrap your tail around. :/

If Toys for Bob does go with the trilogy approach for new Spyro game. I wouldn’t mind wait a bit longer for Spyro 4 if they get more time to work on the story, and how it’ll build up Malefor’s presence in the new games.

I'm back after all these years with an actual idea lol: Now Ive actually thought of this for a while, but if Eternal Night was ever remade Id want the flashbacks of Malefor playable. Imagine being Spyro mentally having to traverse through Warfang of the past, specifically the temple Malefor was trained in. We still see the scenes depicted in the flashbacks but now it's from Spyro's perspective and he metaphorically comes face to face with Malefor and sees what he ans dragon society were like back in the day. You'd see a past version of the chronicler as well and it would another level to the game. Got the idea from Sonic Adventure where something similar would happen to each if the characters and they'd learn about the final boss

That would've been really interesting. Maybe instead of playing as Spryo reawakening his powers with the Chronicler, Spryo is placed into the memory or story of Malefor when he was Spryo's age and we play as Malefor as he learnt every element? We could explore how, between his incredible growth in power and the pressure the elders put on him, Malefor became darker as he got older and then was corrupted once he unlocked Aether. Both the audience and Spryo himself witness how similar they are and it rubs on Spryo, paralleling him throughout his journey getting stronger and ultimately using dark aether at the end against Gaul and his resistance of that same corruption.

He is a purple dragon who has learned necromancy and other dark powers which he Basicaly passes to cynder.

Mark Hamill is definitely a phenomenal actor but I feel as though his voice sounded a bit janky in dawn of the dragon. I don’t know if it’s just me or if everyone else might agree too.

if you want to talk about his voice, perhaps if it was altered on the level of 2003 Shredder when his helmet was on. Who knows? Maybe Scottie Ray himself could voice Malefor with the same filter as his Shredder role. He'd be perfect for that.

I think that malefors voice never actually changed it would have always been like that but his mind would have changed from positive to negative when he became a villain and seeing how that he's been around for such a long time he would have learnt thousands of things and everything he knew would never escape his mind of all the smart dragons he would have been the smartest of all the strong dragons he would have been the strongest of all the fast dragons he would have been the fastest and as for his greed for power he would have taken so much that he would only be greedy for more so every time someone would say dragon he should be the very first that comes to mind because maybe he's just trying to show everyone how a true dragon of power and greatness should be and of all Spyro's villain's he should be right at the very top of the list without a doubt

Nah, they're completely different realities with different rules. Classic Spyro's ability to use multiple elements isn't natural like the other two versions, since in the Classic world all dragons, regardless of color, normally have fire. Being a purple dragon is still special in that continuity, but not as much as in the Legend series, we see other purples walking around all the time in Classic.
