Really appreciate your effort with this post. Keep them coming. When first introduced to SL as a youth many years ago, I was immediately hook and spent many hours playing SL with friends. Adult life intervened and now I finally have an opportunity to revisit this classic AH game after all these years. This video helps reinforce the manual and my recollection of rules of play. Well done.

The best small unit tactical game ever made. I loved how machine guns could fire down streets. First time that was ever modeled. In the Tractor Works I remember playing against my friends as the Germans in the USAF back in the '70s and popping smoke, running my assault engineers into the smoke adjacent to the fanatical Russians who would get point blank fire modified by smoke. Most of the time the high morale of the engineers allowed them to survive while revealing the question mark counters. On the close combat phase the engineers would move into the hex and CC the fanatical Soviets. Great stuff, fond memories.

Loved this game as a teen. My friend and I spent hundreds of hours playing that. These scenarios bring back lots of great memories. I wish these vid had been around them, we always muddled through he rules lol

Still the most played and exciting board game in my adult life. I have not gone beyond SL into ASL, but had SL COI and COD to play throughout my university life in the UK. We LOVED it, and it probably saved us hundreds of pounds NOT going to the bars and pubs. Later I got GI (set 4) and a lot later I got extra unmounted expansion boards from the USA. I don't have any gamers in Devon who would play this now: but wow what a collection. What possibilities with all those boards.

It looks like a lot has changed since I got my copy of SL back in 1977 ! The restriction on engineers only using flamethrowers and satchels, the MP penalty for moving through smoke and the ability to throw smoke and still move and fire all spring to mind. Or maybe those rules were there in the 77 version but I am just getting old, I'm going to have to drag out my copy and look it up !

I took up ASL in 1987 and I thought I was old !! Havent played since maybe 1994 but im going to take it up again

This is pretty good stuff! Like many of the commenters, I have not played in a long time and would like to get back into the game. (My set is old and moldy already.) I even have Cross of Iron and Crescendo of Doom. I am definitely looking forward to Scenario 3.

One of my favorite tactics was to throw the demo pack into the lower levels of the buildings if the enemy is on an upper level. If a KIA is rolled. That whole hex become rubble. I use that tactic in certain circumstances.

You have a big choice coming up. Are you going to go with the original AFV rules or are you going to jump right to the ones in Cross of Iron that eventually replaced them?

@@LegendaryTactics You could make a good case for either one. Personally, I'd like to see the Cross of Iron rules but I kind of know how the book ends (at least until Crescendo). However, for people new to the system, the original rules might be the way to go since they might not make it to Cross of Iron. It's a lot more expensive on Ebay than I would have thought.

That's a good idea! I think I will just go over the 2nd edition rules as is, and if the How To Play Squad Leader series makes it to Cross of Iron, I will do another video about it at that time. Thanks so much! (And yes, some of those old games are super expensive on EBay)

Best scenario? Streets of Stalingrad from original SL. Capture of Balta maybe (in Cross of Iron). Though Hubes Pocket was wild! Action at Balberkamp was great: multiple reinforcements, time pressure on both sides (Crescendo of Doom) Finally, Action at Kommerscheidt was nice to see powerful allied tanks in action (G.I. Anvil of Victory)
