Sterling Archer But even Edea under her control doesn't say much. You spend most of your time running after her, and you only run into her at the end of disc 1 & 2. At that point she says some generic stuff, like how much she loves war and she's so evil and everyone should be real scared, boss fight, and then ending. Edea's character is developed during throughout the game, but Ultimecia's really feels like it comes out of nowhere.

I love the hints at little things that Dissidia takes from the old games. Like Zidane's quote "you don't need a reason to help people" and Squall at 2:49 when he puts the sword in front of his face, like the old picture from the original game. Also Zidane taking on Garland? That's definitely a nod to Zidane fighting Garland in his own game.

Squall, unable to deal with the fact that not even people last forever, tried to close himself up so he wouldn't have to feel the pain of loss. The past is past, and the future's yet to come, so enjoy the present while you can. Ultimecia, however, never learned this. After hearing that the "Rinoa is Ultimecia" theory is debunked, I still can't find myself accepting it. Not because I want more evidence, but because personally, the narrative seems more coherent if Rinoa was Ultimecia. I mean, let's be honest: Ultimecia is a rather "empty" villain. While I get the "she is evil for evil's sake" argument, you have to agree that it's a rather weak motivation for a Final Fantasy villain. Why did she want time compression to happen in the first place? "To be a living god," it says on the wiki. Of what, exactly? She's the only one capable of living through the whole thing. There's nothing to gratify her: no one to enslave, no one to punish, no nothing. IDK, but if it were Rinoa, I'd think she was trying to compress time to, you know, be with Squall, one way or another. As for the Squall is Dead: hear, hear. :) I find the explanation rather lacking. Such a strong assertion requires strong evidence, too. At the end of the day, I'm not claiming my opinion as fact; I'm acknowledging that my reasoning could actually be weak, and I welcome any bit of info that might have sailed over my head. Please try and do so constructively, though. I shall try to be equally polite and constructive. :)

I have reasons for not believing R=U either. I'll list them and try to keep it short: 1) Ultimecia tries to kill Rinoa twice: once in Deling City, and then when she leaves her to die in space. This would effectively prevent Ultimecia from existing if she had succeeded 2) Rinoa herself says that Time Compression would make it so Ultimecia *"is the only one whom could exist in such a world. She, and no other."* . Wouldn't this mean Squall could not exist as well? So her trying to reunite with him would be in vain if he couldn't live in her "perfect world" anyway. 3) Ultimecia also tries to kill _Squall_ , in Deling City. That, right there, puts a damper in plans. If she wanted to reunite with him, why would she try and kill him? People have argued "because she doesn't remember him due to Griever" _(being a GF and all)_ . But then, if she doesn't remember Squall...that would make her venture to bring him back to her completely pointless. 4) Before the second battle with Edecia _(Edea+Ultimecia)_ in Galbadia Garden, she refers to Squall as *"the Legendary SeeD destined to face me"* . This at least serves as indication there is something more going on regarding her motives. She speaks to Squall directly and _still_ does not seem to recognize him. The R=U theory contradicts itself on multiple accounts, and even Ultimecia and Rinoa defy it. Ultimecia's own words at the end of the game are: *"SeeD... SeeD, SeeD... SeeD, SeeD, SeeD! Kurse all SeeDs. Swarming like lokusts akross generations. You disgust me. The world was on the brink of that ever-elusive Time Kompression. Insolent fools. Your vain krusade ends here, SeeD! The price for your meddling is death beyond death. I will send you to a world beyond your imagination. There, I will reign, and you will be my slaves for eternity. HAHAHAHA. Whom shall I exterminate first?! I'll start with you three!"* This quote alone speaks volumes of her intentions -- she's out to destroy SeeD for the persecution she faced in her own time. As Squall said _"SeeDs are trained to defeat the Sorceress"_ . Most likely, both of these lines together imply that Ultimecia faced endless hardship and mental anguish growing up -- and SeeD was most likely a big part of why. That's why she hates them so much; or so it would make sense anyway. She is hellbent on killing _all_ of them -- even Squall, since he is their leader; becoming Commander of SeeD and all, it makes sense she would target him. He leads the charge in defeating her. However, that same lengthy quote is probably one of the most controversial quotes in FFVIII as well, as it neither confirms, nor denies, the theory. If only Ultimecia could exist in her world, how could she have "slaves"? But, at the same time, Squall is amongst those she is talking to...and she _still_ doesn't seem to recognize him. Yeah, they didn't explain Ultimecia's background or motives very well. But the implications are there -- and for every event in the game that _supports_ R=U...another one is thrown in that completely annihilates it. That's why I find it hard to accept as canon. And it would also suck if one of the biggest love stories in Final Fantasy ended in tragedy. It's too "Romeo & Juliet", if you ask me. And the fact that the original, Japanese translation deters from the theory a bit more.

And secondly, I dont see this theory as absolutely true, but as a perfect possible addition to the main theme of the story. For the longest time, I felt like it would fit so extremely well that it would be crazy if it was actually all just randomly and without thought, no matter what was said officialy. (This made it particularly complicated when they seemed to flirt with the idea at least once in Dissidia) It would make the story of the game a little bit deeper and complexer, while beeing perfectly in tune with the theme of forgetting and the fear of dying. In the end I would love this game nontheless, but it seems like a missed opportunity or something they changed along the way, at least to me. So this is basically my headcanon until Square decides that it actually does care about FFVIII.

matthew booth Rinoa is practically the exact opposite of Ultimecia. Even though Squall is the main character of FFVIII, Ultimecia's really more the arch nemesis to Rinoa than Squall. That said, unless there's another sorceress in Rinoa's time period we don't known about, then Ultimecia's Power would eventually have to come from Rinoa's "line".

blood mage I forgot to mention in this comment that the creators eventually debunked the theory. They outright stated that Rinoa is not Ultimecia. Not only that, I'm pretty sure the game itself implies that sorceresses only have a really _bad_ kind of immortality. I think it specifically says that Adel was looking for a successor for the Sorceress Power because she was beginning to _feel her age_. It's been YEARS since I played through the story of Dissidia, but other people have said that her dialogue implies that her desire for Time Compression is something different. They say it's because she wants to return to the time of her childhood, the last time _she was happy_, possibly before she became a sorceress.

I come back here every now and again, just to remind myself of something: Squall is a loner, that simple fact never changes. He constantly isolates himself, prefers to handle things his own way. He can work well in a team, but feels confined if he can't roam somewhat freely. But, at least by this point in his timeline, he's not 'lonely'. He trusts his teammates to have his back, knows they're there fighting even if they're out of sight. He trusts others, and knows they can trust him. That trust isn't in contrast to his nature as a loner, it emboldens it. When you understand to your very core that you're not alone, that there are people worth having in your life who also want you in theirs, you don't have to see them all the time to remember it. As an introvert, this was a huge lesson for me to learn: this simple fighting game and FF8 put me on the path to really understanding it, and I'll always be grateful.

I want a FF8-2 The Reign of Ultimecia. There are hints of Riona as Ultimecia. Riona- Her wings are white. Ultimecia- Her wings are black. Riona wanted Squall's ring named Griever. Ultimecia - Her GF is Griever. Using a GF makes you lose your memory.

And a little side note, completely forgot. When Squall gotten hit by Edea's (Ultimecia) Ice shards during the parade, afterwards you see Edea's expression on her face that either Ultimecia had a memory of Squall dying before and heard her own scream from Riona or Edea had a little control and remember Squall as a young boy. And you see Ultimecia control Riona as herself in the possession they are connected. It somehow fit's into place a little.

As you may remember, rinoa was able to see Adel's past when she absorbed her. A sorcess has to pass on her powers to someone else before she dies. Ultimecia is the only sorcess in her time. Rinoa came from the past. So Ultimecia must also have her power and memories too. So ... yeah.

Ultimecia's GF is only Griever because of Squall. Why would Ultimecia not welcome everyone in the temporarily time kompressed world if she was truly Rinoa in the future grieving for Squall? There are similarities, but these are separate people, and Square denied the theory long ago. I think you (some of) guys just can't handle the strong female protagonist. She's gotta break sooner or later, by your logic. I think she picked up on Squall's complex perception and wisdom when she finally understood him. RINOA IS ULTIMECIA Squall's 1st script in this video was "I only came to fullfill my promise" that is because in the original FF8 Squall made a promise that sometime in the future Squall will see Rinoa again(bythat time Rinoa was Ultimecia) The last boss(ultimecia) and her castle was in the place where Squall made that promise too see Rinoa again in the original game. *everything will make sense if you replay the game having the perspective that Rinoa is Ultimecia. And ya'all say its the best game of all!

Maybe if you have no hope for life beyond death, but even then a lot of people who don't have that hope don't trudge along through life acting like it all the time. The funny part is that even though the "Ultimecia is Rinoa" theory has been denied by SE, the ENTIRE FANBASE says "You are full of shit, SE." There is just no denying it when you put the pieces together of how the sorceress power works and just how much Ultimecia responds when she's possessing Edea. When she spears Squall with the ice spear on the parade float, there's a close-up of Edea's face (remember, she's possessed by Ultimecia), and she looks sad. Maybe it was Edea's sadness, maybe it was Rinoa's, maybe it was BOTH. I'm ranting and I'm gonna shut up now.

Jaden Addams Edea was sad because she didn't want to stab Squall, but she was under Ultimecia's control so she couldn't really stop anything she was doing. And the entire fanbase does not agree with that theory, only a random few people

And I read somewhere that a ton of content was cut from the game so the U.S.A. basically got half of the game. It doesn't show the development of Squall and Rinoa, and how Irvine and Selphie were much bigger parts of the game.

Part of me doesn't really want to trust what Square officials say. After all, they killed Enix. But on the other end I don't really support this theory either. The real problem here is that Ultimecia doesn't exist for 80% of the game, that's why the theory is convenient.

I dunno what you guys are on about but if you're saying what I think you are then, no, the gunblade doesn't shoot bullets or blades. I read on a site somewhere that the when the trigger is pulled it sends vibrations through the blade causing more damage. That's why in the game whenever squall attacks, if you press R1 at the right time, it does extra damage.

Cloud, Squall, Tidus... These are so badass FF protagonists :) I love them.. They should have make Tidus big in Kingdom Hearts, then he could join the FF Chars in the Arena of Olymp :P Cloud and Leon is alrdy a dreamteam but with Tidus it would be pure epicness.

You know, where Squall deflects all of those arrows at point-blank range -- if they showcased Squall doing such badass stuff more often, he wouldn't always be looked down upon and given the short end of the stick. He is compared to both Lightning and Cloud unfavorably and everyone is convinced he is so freakin' weak when he's not -- this scene alone proves that! I really hope they remake VIII next. Squall, and FFVIII, do not get enough love even from SE. Oh! And this is my favorite scene ever in Dissidia!

Agree, same here. I assume they changed her personality. In the original game she looked more evil. Now she looks more flirtatious. It is also probably due to her voice acress who has a beautiful sensual voice.

Ulty has no accent in the Japanese, Infact the way she speaks is someone whose very affluent and dramatic. She speaks Regally you could say. However there is nothing in her speech that implies some kind of accent to her words. Basically the English team gave her a thick Odine like accent at the end cause they could. Which of course doesn't makes sense cause Rinoa and Edea didn't speak with an accent when possessed , Showing someone doesn't understand what an accent is... since if its a physical restriction its a speech impediment. Hell She loses the Accent half way through the final fight!! TLDR version, Ulty never had an accent to begin with, The US team was just high off their asses when they added it in. Though someone had a sense of humor since Its 'Sniper Wolf' doing her English voice her and made us all think she'd have the accent back.

"R=U Theory". Ultimecia -> Rinoa (well, if SquareEnix wants it in FF Dissidia only) 1. Rinoa wants/urge Squall to be along with his friends/comrades in the original FFVIII whilst Ultimecia (Dissidia) deliberately get him seperated made him a loner. 2. Ultimecia maybe the ultimate Rinoa ifshe can't controlled her Sorceress power. Everything about them is contradictory:colorhairm, eyes, wings, cloth & even makeup. 3.at 1:39, MINDF*CK. And you suck for not paying attention. When Ultimecia froze time, Squall was at the end of his explosion-attack(don't remember the name now). When time went back to normal, he just finished it at the exact moment the arrows hit, destroying them. He was just LUCKY his attack was finished at the same time the arrows(close to his face) attacked, causing their destruction, and giving him time to react to the other arrows around him.
