Squamish Doubleheader

Canadian Pacific 4-6-4 #2860 and Canadian National 4-8-2 #6060 team up for a doubleheaded trip to Squamish from North Vancouver and back on one of the Royal Hudson's scheduled trips in 1988.

I like how the two engines are just casually having a whistle battle while ripping uphill. I choose to believe CP/CN crews used to do this back when it was just the railroad thru the mountains.

Great video. Brings back alot of my memories of the Royal Hudson. In the summer of 1976 l had a opportunity I'll never forget. My mother was a good friend of Frank the engineer of the Royal Hudson at the time. I had a ride in the cab starting North Vancouver to Squamish. The sound of the rolling thunder of her wheels rolling down track, the heat, smell and steam going through tunnels. The roar of her whistle. A dream come true. Love steam locomotives. Thank you for sharing.

I had the honor of working as a brakeman on the Hudson when I worked for BCR ,was the with out a doubt the best job I have ever had. My only regret is taking it for granted and not taking enough pictures.

Just went to a 75th birthday celebration and fund raiser for the Royal Hudson 2860, at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park in Squamish B.C. The hope is that the Royal Hudson be able to do some special runs in the future.

Absolutely great video, under trying weather conditions. Here’s a tip of the hat, from a geezer who grew up before the diesel age and steam locomotives abounded. I’m also hypercritical about 2860 and 6060 videos and this one is definitely tops. Except for that damn air whistle at the beginning by the 6060. Well, at least, it’s not ringing the bell constantly, as the 6060 is prone do do (too much).

One of the classiest steam locomotives ever! She was able to exceed 100 mph. on a level straightaway. Looks like there's at least 12 cars behind the CN engine (5:53). Must have sold a lot of tickets for this special ride.

This is a great vid. The 1980's were great for mainline steam excursions, in 1988 in the US you could ride mainline steam trips behind N&W 611 on Norfolk Southern, or 1218, and NKP 765 in NJ, PA, and NY on special trips as part of a NHRS convention in NJ, and BM&R 2102 on off line trips on Conrail to several destinations. Such as Gettysburg, Jim Thorpe, Philadelphia Zoo, Harrisburg, etc. In the 90's most mainline trips in the eastern US came to an end with NS ending its steam program with 611 in Dec 1994, and other railroads like CSX starting to "hate" steam as well, also Conrail joined the hate steam party. 1995 and up there were almost zero steam excursions on class 1 freight railroads in the eastern US. I understand Hunter Harrison of CP hates steam, too and their steam program came to a quiet end. He took over CP a few years ago and their Hudson steam engine hasn't run on CP since. It was actually down for repairs when Harrison took over CP. It's a regular Hudson, not a Royal like this one. I'm riding behind 611 in Virginia June 4 for the first time.

Really miss seeing the Hudson run on a regular basis. As a kid I use to ride in the cab as they turned it around for the next day. I'm sure even if it was running you would be aloud to do that now with all the liability and safety concerns

Does anybody know what kind of 6 chime 2860 wore during her career? (1:50) It just doesn't sound like any other 6 chime I've heard before, so if anyone could tell me what kind of 6 chime it is, would be greatly appreciated!

I am sure there is a story about the Hudson’s whistles but I can’t find it. Seems to me Robert Swanson had a whistle that was close to his heart installed when he was involved with the Hudson’s restoration. Listen to his story about whistle development: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGfCaX6njs-DfJI He talks about a whistle he made for a railway on the Queen Charlottes. He had it returned to his possession years later. He plays a recording of the whistle at the link. Perhaps it is the whistle that he installed on the Hudson. If you have an ear for whistles maybe you can determine if it sounds the same as the whistle you hear on the video.

The Royal Hudson has two whistles. CPR whistles are shrill. A second whistle more mellower was added to benefit those living close to the tracks.

I can’t find the information. Robert Swanson was instrumental in the restoration of the Hudson. Pretty sure there is a story somewhere about the second whistle he installed. I suspect it is a Swanson whistle. Listen to his speech here : kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGfCaX6njs-DfJI He plays a steam locomotive whistle from Comox Logging’s #16. Sure sounds the same as the Hudson to me.

ashamed they no long have five day a week for I rode three times a lot consider I lieve in Maryland I therougly enjoyed it but railfans are railfans its a sort of a do nothing thing you some thing thing could have been some thing to keep it going some feel the only steam that should run is the Strasberg Or 0-4-0
