It's a time consuming job and it sucks. Replacing my heater core on my 1987 GMC Sierra square body truck. Same as C 10 WITH AIR CONDITIONING.

Looks like a nightmare. Thanks for the Heads Up. The Summit racing core Isn't Aluminum so ya don't hafta use Distilled water or worry about electrolysis caused by a bad accessory ground. WTF ? We always used a garden Hose with no worry of corrosion. Anyway here's the part # for the Copper/Brass one: sum382177 heater core

Great job HAFRODS! I agree with everything that you observed during your heater core install. The blend door assy with the plastic part was also broken on mine. I repaired it with a thorough cleaning and Gorilla glue. My 1987 1ton four door had the HC replaced before. Plenty of rust because of the coolant saturated floor insulation. Your comments on the blend door pin that has to be removed; part of the door in my heater box were broken from prior removal. Gorilla glue and jerry rigged plastic bits to the rescue again. It was a bitch trying to figure out that pins' orientation. I finally got it all back together, I hope that this core lasts forever! Thanks again!

I did the job on my 1979 and taking apart the box was simple, no shaft to remove. Reinstalling the heaer back on the firewall was the hard part for me.

Just took my heater core out and I'm working on getting that spike pin out now, the long one.

Honestly, this is one of the easiest heater cores I have done. Try doing a heater core on an 02 f150. You literally have to pull the entire dash. Also, you dont need to remove the plastic thing nor the nail looking thing from the blend door, there is a bolt on the inside you can access easily from the side furthest from the heater core. This took me alittle over an hour only because I took the time to cut the head off the nail thing and pull it all the way threw, just to realize there was no point. Also....that's how you remove the nail looking thing.... gring the head and pull it all the way threw....its ring shanked so it wont go back the other way.

Lol I feel bad because when I did mine is was so easy of coarse it was on a no AC 1973 Sierra and I had lots of room to work no vacuum lines no ac hoses just plain Jane nuts an bolts! The biggest problem was cleaning out the mouse nest and fixing the weather stripping/ rubber seals on the box flaps. Just take it easy one step at a time! I also had no carpet or any of the newer upgrades! I love my truck cuz its so easy to work on I just hate living up North because the floor pans rust out ever three years because of the chemicals they put in the road salt an being wet all the time! Im putting on a lift kit and going to flex seal the whole underneath became I just can't keep it from rusting! The frames fine but the body always rust out even the new patches its crazy! Can't keep a truck indoors its a work truck for godsakes!

You will get to do this repair again very soon since you used the cheap aluminum heater core. You want to pay a little more and get the copper one from Summit Racing.

How did you fix that little plastic piece that broke at 2:17?
@Temple-of-Procrastination3 жыл бұрын
I put a larger washer onit and epoxy ed it around the edges. The little plastic piece wants to be inside real bad. Definitely spend your time reinforcing it. Refresh the seal on the door. Good luck

GM really made a mess of this whole thing...Don't use that Aluminum Heater core they suck and don't heat well buy brass/copper like original. Summit Racing sells the OEM one.
