You're welcome! Is this your first year doing square foot gardening? How many raised beds will you have?
@twinny120093 жыл бұрын
@@SmallGardenQuest Hi I did a version of square foot gardening in pots last year but with the hot weather it was so difficult to keep up with the watering as it dried out so quickly - didnt use Mel's mix! This year I will be using raised beds and I 2 x 4ft beds and 2 x 3ft beds. Have you made a video on what plants should/shouldn't be planted with what other plants. I am a bit confused, if a certain plant is not to be planted with another ie bean with garlic, does this mean not to plant in the same raised bed or just not close to it? If so how many square feet apart should each be planted? Hope this makes sense😊 Really enjoy watching your videos, you explain things so well. Many thanks

kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmfbfKmlod54n80 Here is a video of how I planed my garden last year. What plant together and what not is not that of a great importance. To solve your watering problem you can use mulch. I made a Vido od this topic how mulch is helpful 😊

@@SmallGardenQuest thank you! I plan to have 5 beds in front...took away part of the lawn for them because that's the sunny area and three more in back that gets a little less sun...all are close to the house and water because my yard is small 😁

@@SmallGardenQuest Oh goodness! Probably just a small garden for food, and I'll be using the square foot gardening technique for sure! I'm still using containers for some of my herbs (mainly my mint, since it's such a water-hog). I'm excited to plant some flowers too - milkweed and nasturtiums as well as some zinnia :D

Thanks for the wonderful video. What is the difference between parlite and vermiculite?
@SmallGardenQuest4 жыл бұрын
Although it’s a common misconception, vermiculite and perlite are not the same. Vermiculite is a silicate material that’s brown or beige in color and has a soft, sponge-like texture. Perlite is harder, is white in color, and is made out of mined volcanic rock. Vermiculite and perlite also differ when it comes to pH level, which may be a consideration when you’re choosing which to add to your soil. Perlite is slightly alkaline, while vermiculite tends to be closer to neutral. (If you aren’t sure what your soil’s pH level is, our article “How to Test pH in Your Soil” can help.) Vermiculite and perlite do share many qualities. Both products are inorganic, lightweight, and relatively sterile. And of course, both are used as a soil amendment to aerate soil-though perlite provides more aeration than vermiculite. Both perlite and vermiculite are highly porous, making them able to hold water in the soil so it’s available for your plants. However, vermiculite holds more moisture and keeps it available in the soil longer than perlite will.

Thanks for the info We don't have vermiculite or peatmoss where I live, what can I replace them with?
@SmallGardenQuest4 жыл бұрын
Vermiculate can be replaced with perlite Peatmoss can be replaced with coco coir If you dont have them too you can use just compost mixed with top soil half and half. It will be OK :)

Hi! I've recently discovered your videos and I really enjoy them. I'll probably have several questions going forward, but my first is this: Are pallets safe for planter construction? My understanding is that they are greatly treated with chemicals to avoid breakdown. Wouldn't that lead to contaminates in the soil and plants? Thanks!

Can I ask you something friend.... why did you line your raised garden bed with plastic ?
@SmallGardenQuest4 жыл бұрын
I didn't line them with plastic but I use a fabric row cover that is usually used to cover plants before winter. I use it to prevent spilling of the soil from the holes :)
