Hey I am 16 and I just started out into gardening I have one raised bed that I made and I want to know how to install a trellis with a hoop on it so it is protected from the elements and animals, Great Video I am going to make a Square foot Gardening because it seem so simple.

Hi Yosi, I'm not sure I understand what you're trying to make, but let me guess. The trellis would be for the plants to grow up off of the ground. That can be done with 2' long rebar and 1" PVC pipe or other strong pipe/poles. Pound the rebar into the ground about half way, then slip the PVC over it. Use elbow connectors to make the top cross bar. There are many other ways to make a trellis. You might want to search a little online. It would be difficult to add protective coverings with the trellis in place. I usually put the trellis on the outside of the box, right up close to it, but you might be able to put the poles for the trellis at both ends of the box and in a foot, then drape your netting or protective coverings over it. You may have to play with it a bit. There is a SFG Facebook group. They might be a good place to ask this question. I hope you do well! Gardening is a great activity--especially when it's SFG!

Really enjoyed this video. This, long, winter I tried to keep garden busy. In anticipation of my square foot beds, I made my own seed tapes with tiny seeds already perfectly spaced. The toilet paper squares are 4" so a perfect size to use in the beds. Lettuce and carrots were my first. Come planting I simply took a little soil off the top, gently patted down the square to level and lightly firm the area. Laid down the tape and sprinkled the soil back on. Gently watered it in . everything is coming up beautifully.

Fabulous. I love SFG. Indeed, the original book was my first gardening book. It made succeeding so easy when I started "farming" in my 20s, that I'm still growing at 55. The big difference is that I now use no-dig "lasagna" gardening techniques to build above my negative soil instead of Mel's Mix with cardboard boxes for weed-block... much cheaper. I also have ditched the wood sides and don't use a grid, but use Mel's spacing. Still, the SFG technique is genius and easy to follow.

I have done SFG in the past and I love it. Cannot do it anymore because I no longer have 6-8 hours of sun in an area to make the program work. Too many trees. So I switched to another method which I had great results last year. If I was younger I would move and get a bigger place. :) Love your video. Very informative for those starting SFG gardens.

I use a RGGS method which is rain gutter grow system. You can get detailed information by searching on you tube for RGGS OR rain gutter grow system. My growing area is small and I use a smaller container than the 5 gallon bucket. I also modify the rain gutter by using dish pans with bricks to support the growing bucket. What I am saying will make more sense after you watch a couple of videos.

Thank you so much, Leslie for putting this video together and sharing. I have started a no dig garden by laying cardboards down and had garden soil blend brought in. Next, I've put wood mulch along the pathway, and my flower and veg seeds are coming along nicely. Yesterday, I put together a pallet size compost which is heating up. Most of the materials used are outsourced and aged.. hopefully it would speed up the composting process. Nothing has been planted in the beds as yet. But, I wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for this very valuable and timely info about square foot planting. I did know about it, however, starting now, I have a better understanding about how to prepare the soil which is precisely what the beds need to flourish. Anyway. Hope you are doing well at your neck of the woods. Regards, Tania from Australia.🌻🐝🥬

I enjoyed your video, thank you Leslie. I've read the square foot guarding book 2 years ago and tried it in one plot I had. The problem I had, and don't have an answer for it, is that I grew tomatoes (3), Kale, lettuce, swiss chard, peppers, red onion, radishes and basil. (Probably more but I don't remember). I stuck to the plan, 1 square foot for tomato, pepper, and 16(?) for radishes etc.. But what happened is the big plants just took over. They grew into the next squares and even the squares next to those. Is there a better way to plan the crops in each square? I felt I lost some produce based on the overgrowth and overcrowding.
@LeslieCaza
@LeslieCaza 3 жыл бұрын
Yes! Thank you for asking. You were right with your planning, but with the larger plants like tomatoes, you will need to trim and trellis them. Keep the tomatoes to one main vine and have a trellis the plant. I weave the vine up the trellis as it grows and each week to a careful pruning. There are some things that I think are just too large, such as bush-style zucchini. Plant the larger plants towards back corners, shorter/smaller plants toward the front. I personally prefer a 2x8 shape bed over a 4x4 for that reason. I hope this helps.

I think this is the way the world can change the way they eat. everyone can do this. One question and that is how do i do the bottom of the box on a table. I have a balcony and can make a 2x6 foot set up and don't need a trellis cuz the peas can just go over the balcony rail. but the bottom of the box would need to be closed and yet water has to be able to drain somewhere. This sounds like it will be a challenge. Any suggestions you may have will really help.

SFG suggests drilling 1/4" holes every 6 inches. Check out the 3rd edition of the book, page 84. It is always helpful to have a copy of the book for the questions. There is also a SFG Answer Book that is great. I hope this helps! All the best to you. I've been doing this and teaching it for years. Love, love, love it!!

you said you should buy four or five bags of compost and mix them together. Can you tell me what they are called and where you brought them from?
@LeslieCaza
@LeslieCaza Жыл бұрын
There are many kinds of compost: mushroom compost, composted chicken manure, composted steer manure, worm castings. Check your local nurseries. Big hardware stores such as Lowe's or Home Depot carry compost, but some are just ground forest products (like bark) and sand with a little compost. These are usually very inexpensive and NOT what you want. Occasionally they will carry Black Cow, which is a better quality. Nurseries are your best option. Call around as prices can vary. Also, check online in your area for mushroom compost or worm castings since there may be independent producers of these products. If you know of anyone with a barn for sheep or goats, you can ask if you can muck their barns. I stay away from horse manure since it carries weed seeds. Avoid fresh manures! They are too hot and will burn your plants. Only use composted/aged manures. You can also produce your own composts for the mix. There are many ways to make compost. Check the web for videos. Blessings in your journey!

Are there certain plants that shouldn't be planted next to each other like nightshades or rotated into that spot?
@LeslieCaza
@LeslieCaza 3 жыл бұрын
There are a few reasons for rotating crops. One is that each crop requires different nutrients etc. In SFG you add compost before replanting a square, so the soil is nicely fed. Another reason is pests. In SFG crop diversity helps with that a lot. Most people plant a variety of plants in the bed rather than an entire box of tomatoes etc. But as far as rotation goes, it is a natural with SFG because the plan is to grow continually in the grow box. When the season changes from a cool weather crop (like lettuce), a warm weather crop goes in (such as beans). We think 1 square foot at a time rather than rows of one crop. It is not likely to plant the same plant in the same square in succession because of the demands of the growing season. Therefore a natural crop rotation takes place. My biggest concern about planting next to each other is space, and sometimes I leave a box empty for a little knowing I will use that square in a month or two for a next-season-crop. The SFG books do not address companion planting to my knowledge. That is something you could experiment with, and certainly companion planting would work in a SFG. You might want to invest in the SFG 3rd edition and the answer book or check them out of your local library. These are a wealth of information. Happy planting! I believe we were created to live in the garden and it is a most wonderful place to be, especially if it's a Square Foot Garden!

I have wondered the same. There would be a few things to consider. Would you make your own quality compost or have to buy it all? Do you already own all the tools and farming equipment needed to do traditional farming? What materials would you need to purchase to build your box frames and how often would you need to need to replace them? What is the cost of manpower? To explain: Self produced compost takes time but can be very inexpensive if you have free resources for the ingredients. Quality purchased compost can be $8-30 per cubic foot. The price of tools for a SFG is minimal, but quality farm equipment and tools could be tens of thousands of dollars. The SFG box frames can be made of a wide variety of materials. Metal frames last many years but are more expensive than wood. Wood needs to be replaced more often which is additional expense of time and money. There are many other options for the frames. The cost in man hours to run a SFG is low since no cultivation is needed (tilling and weeding). Watering is also a consideration. SFG uses less water, but in very hot and dry times, needs consistent watering (every 1-3 days) because it drains well. If your natural soil is clay it will hold moisture longer. I use both in ground and SFG methods but get my greatest yields from SFG with the least amount cultivating. Root crops and other vegetables do very well in a SFG, but I have not tried grains which require large amounts of plants to produce a decent harvest. You have much to consider. I started with a few small SFG boxes as an experiment and have added more each year as I learn how to best manage them for my needs. If you have not used SFG methods, that might be a good way to begin. For best results use quality composts and follow the instructions carefully. The results can be amazing. Whatever you choose, you will receive the blessing of God's natural, health-promoting "doctors": fresh air, sunshine, physical activity, and plant-based foods. 😊

@@kimyee2083 Good for you and your success. SFG is not the only growing method that works. If you enjoy what you do and it works for you then stick with it. I do not grow varieties known for huge size but select smaller fruits that produce abundantly. That's part of the joy of gardening . . . growing what you like to eat and experimenting! How many square foot gardens do you need to grow enough food for one person for one year?
@LeslieCaza
@LeslieCaza 3 жыл бұрын
Do you mean to be totally self-efficient or to just have fresh vegetables? It would be difficult to tell you how much for total self-efficiency since you would need a large amount of calorie crops like beans and potatoes. If you are new to gardening I would suggest starting small, say maybe 2 boxes with 16 squares each (4x4', 2x8', but whatever you do, do not make the boxes more the 4 ft wide. Never be more than 2 feet away from a square for easy access). The 3rd edition of the book says, "One 16 square feet will supply enough produce to make a salad for one adult every day of the growing season. A second 4x4 box and you'll supply the daily supper vegetables for that person each day of the growing season." I would strongly suggest purchasing the book. The paperback is less than $10 and a wealth of information: www.amazon.com/Square-Foot-Gardening-Fully-Updated/dp/0760362858/ref=sr_1_3?crid=VASZ56BQ0RTO&dchild=1&keywords=square+foot+gardening+book&qid=1612889890&sprefix=Square+foot%2Caps%2C219&sr=8-3

Is mulch is necessary if I'm going to use Mel's mix?
@LeslieCaza
@LeslieCaza 4 жыл бұрын
You want the mix 6 inches deep. (which is half a foot), so figure out how many square feet you want to plant and divide that number by 2. That is how many cubic feet you'll need. Example: if you have a 4'x4' bed, that is 16 square feet. So you would need 8 cubic feet. Look at the cubic feet on the bags you buy. The peat is a 3 cubic foot bale. The coarse vermiculite is a 4 cubic foot bag. A 40 lb bag of quality compost might be 1 cubic foot (read the bag) so you'd need about 4 bags. All together that would give you approximately 11 cubic feet of mix, but it packs down as it is watered so it doesn't actually stay 11 fluffy cubic feet. If you have leftover it can be used in pots or in another smaller bed.

If you need to retain moisture, say if you won't be able to water for a week or so, or if the weather is extremely hot and dry, you could mulch. Be careful to not mix the mulch into the Mel's mix.

Wait! 4 corns in one square?
@LeslieCaza
@LeslieCaza Жыл бұрын
According to the 3rd edition, corn is planted 4 per square foot. I would be careful with planting corn. It is large and could block the sun for anything behind it. Make sure it is toward to back of the grow box. I have never grown corn in my SFG, but have grown a sunflower. It did wonderful!

This was a great video. I have been gardening for many years but this is the first time that I am using square foot gardening in two of of my six raised beds. This was a great resource. I am also pruning my indeterminate tomatoes for the first time so that I can fit more of them in my 8" x 4" raised beds. I converted my in ground garden to raised beds as I have back and ankle injuries and this will make it easier for me going forward. I also like the idea of not compacting by stepping on my soil and better controlling soil fertility in a concentrated area. I make my own compost so I want it to be contained where it is needed. I'm excited. The only thing that scares me now is building a support to tie my indeterminate tomatoes to. I planted them today and will have to come up with a design quick :-) I'm excited about this growing season. Growing more food than ever due to our current state. I love organic foods so I save money and get a greater variety by growing my own. Thanks again for a great video. Peace.

Love your video. We’ve decide to give square foot gardening a try. One question: if our garden is elevated like the ones pictured in your video, does the bottom need a liner, or can bare wood retain moister and soil? Thanks. 🙏

Great question John. Yes, still put a landscape fabric in the bottom to keep the Mel's mix from dropping out or clogging the drainage holes. The third edition of The Square Foot Garden had a nice pictorial tutorial on pages 82-85. Maybe your library can get that for you or even better invest in a copy since it is not an expensive book. Not absolutely needed, but helpful especially if you're new to gardening. And yes, I pray over my garden as well!

Leslie Caza one follow up question: the 1/4” weep holes drilled into the bottom of the box; is that 1 hole in the center and the 1 hole in each corner of the box, or 1 in the center and 4 corners of every square foot? We have a 2’X5’ box by the way.

@@johnmccarty6364 I like the way the 3rd edition says to do this. "Drill 1/4" holes, spaced every 6", through the bottom of the box for drainage." I think this is an improved method.

If you do triangle and not square foot in the pattern you can get more plants into the space.

The spacing is important as given because this is already intensive planting. Dividing the squares into 4, 9, and 16 easy to work with. I hope this helps.
