Thanks for this shortcut! All other methods have you make triangles, measure into the center to get them centered correctly, and when sewing you run the risk of stretching the triangle and everything gets wonky. This way is SO much faster and easier!

yes it is awesome it is a Sharptek Mini Iron. I got is a while ago from my local quilt shop. There are quite a few other brands on the market now.

What size square would I need to start with if I want to make a 12 1/2 inch block (including 1/4 inch seam on all outer sides of last block) with a total of three squares (square in a square in a square)? I've used this method a few times, but I've never figured out the math for a particular finished size block. Thanks in advance for your help!
