You just made my day! I've been wracking my brain (and watching youtube vids for the last 5 hours) trying to figure out how to make an octagonal wood planter that will accept a 5 gallon bucket. Used your calculations on a piece of cardboard and had it done in 2 minutes. Thanks so much for posting this.

The previous water lens we did sagged from the water weight and the small pallet wrap film version was too small. This should cover the entire 89" area or at least 7 foot with a focal length closer to the ground. I think it could match a Fresnel lens with max temps but 2-4 times the net power concentration as the FL is almost 9 feet. The water will be filtered this time so the rust does lower the effect. This vinyl sheet is super thick, 4 X a shower curtain.

Good one, I just figured out how to write online calculators. It is so cool, like the old days of basic. Ha,10th grade was good for something. I am working on a focal length calculator to estimate sun prints and account for optical aberration, target type, light filtering and a list of other factors.

and yes - I do realize many are doing this on YT, but I just like Dan's presentation style and I trust his calculations. MrTeslonian is my next favorite.

Thank you for the nice comment. Waiting for the sun to come out from behind the clouds for our Fresnel Lens system projects. The last 3 years, the summers in FL have been nearly 90% cloud cover so math or building videos. Also with 380 videos in our channel, we try not to repeat the same concept or video over and over + keep the content original vs YT idea recycles. Information sharing of hardcore math usually is a zzz time for most. Including irrelevant stimuli increases memory associations.

This was a learning experience with all the elements including wireless mics and the double overlay graphics + numbers, that were off by one digit the first time. Then YT screwed with it. Sticking to a simple format from here on as much as possible. It was fun in the end and a great learning experience. I am rebuilding our website and will have a bunch of fun stuff on there. It is LOOOONG overdue. Hope all is well, KIT Dan

Thanks pal ,been trying to make a octagon firepit out of square 4x4 foot steel and this is great and so much easier than all that circle drawing. now i use your formula for all my firepit bases, great great great!!!! thankyou!!

HI, GLAD it helped. This formula makes the process very easy.

Always happy to see math put to good use. Thanks, Dan. Impressive throw!
@GREENPOWERSCIENCE11 жыл бұрын
I do not like to throw that far too often as I have trouble lifting my arm above my head the next day. One time i ruptured blood vessels in a finger from blood pooling. I usually throw lefty when getting picked for backyard ball. Get placed on the best team and always win:-) Have not played backyard Fball in years.

I don't use gdata, youtube feeds. I embed videos on relevant pages. But you've given me the idea of doing pages that cover a whole area, like science or electronics. My menu is currently an automatically generated javascript file that includes a function that's called from the webpages. That way one change in the javascript file is all that's needed to update the menu for everything. I've a program written in C that adds headers and footers before I upload a page. PHP would be better.

:-)thank you for the nice comment. Every time there has been an update, we lose views and page rankings. YT is migrating towards young 20 and under video gaming, pranks etc. I assumed that the more videos we had, the more the overall daily views would increase. Since the last channel all in one change we now average the same daily video views we got in 2008 when we had only 30 videos. I have trouble finding half my videos now as they are buried on page 10 or 20 in search. We got bumped bad.

Hi Steve, Thank you for the nice comment:-) I have been learning HTML/PHP and basic java/form building for the web to renew our ancient website. Almost there, actually easy and fun. BTW, love the iron filings video. Good demo!

CSS is fun, and the cells have great options. Have you used gdata.youtube feeds for dynamic video listing? Also separating the header and footer can keep the drop menus the same and a single change reflects all pages that source the head or foot so a 1000 page website can have updates with a single php change.

The first video would not publish internationally and had jumps from the upload. I had to wait 18 hours for this one to be approved. Not sure why that happens.

Hi Dan - we're going to be building an off grid community and need to generate and store electricity on site far from any grid solutions. Any videos you can add that focus on power generation and storage would be most welcome. Love the content, even the "random" stuff will come in handy. :)

Hey Dan. Yeah, websites are things you can spend a lot of time on. I wish I'd started out with PHP but I rely on links throughout the web to URLs of my subpages for google page ranking, so I can't go changing the filenames. But I recently completed a major change so the central content of each page gets automatically wrapped with the stuff around it and most of it uses CSS so sweeping format changes are simpler. Looking forward to more of your videos!

Sorry for the re-upload. This video originally had some glitches during the youtube upload process. I also had to clear the usage of the dolphins helmet. Had fun with the video effects and the throw at the end is real =70+ yards. I added an online calculator that is in feet and inches linked in the show more area below the date. I wrote some additional code for the metric window on the page. Does this easy. ENJOY:-)

LOL, I am working on an app that does 3=triangle, up to 32 sides. Kind of pointless but the math is fun brain tease. It should have area choice, max dimensions, and butt angles or miters. I have always been a math nut on the general math side to algebra. Once I discovered the web form values I just got the bug again. Similar to basic. Hope all is well and keep up the good work on your channel. The SPOOF self powered lightbulb had to be removed.

sqrt(2)-1=.41421... arctan(sqrt(2)-1)=22.5°... One of those fun angles to play with, especially in linear recursion.

Hi Dan, very interresting as usual but I disagree when you say that your solution is simpler than geometry. If you use a "T" which the base is in the center of your square and the horizontal bar is lined with a side of your square, you juste have, then, to make your "T" turn so its vertical bar line toward a corner, trace a line along the horizontal bar, do the same for the four corners and you have a perfect octagon without any need for numbers or calculation.

Condolences again. I remember that post. Sorry for your loss. I sent you a direct message in FEB. Easy to find in my sent box since I do not send messages anymore, cannot find the button with the new setup. I think I am just getting older. Video games and filling your zombie friends shower head with koolaid is what is important. I was thinking of adding some of my projects with solar panels but video making is no fun. It has been covered already anyway.

why wouldn't you just 301 permanent redirect the old page names to the new file names, then your google juice migrates. this is an old problem that HAD TO be dealt with Google (long ago) or no one online would have dared up grade their tech.

Kidding, I agree with 420, you are one of the only reason I stick around. I wish you did live in AZ. You should write a blog on your channel and no offense update your website. I have been pissed with the crud on the feed page when I log in. I know "you don't pay anything" blalala. But searching yubble tube has become a pain in the ass. Search solar by date all spam channels with 4000 of the same copied video. Search relevant channels this hacker shit pops up. I do not give a crap about charging cell phone with toothbrush. There once was a science page where TOP star (b4 thumbs) got noticed So quality got exposure now it is popularity and channel to channel hand-cream
