In this sewing tutorial, I will show you how to square up fabric if you need to cut fabric straight. Squaring up fabric usually means straightening fabric before cutting. Sounds simple, right? But in fact, this is often a real problem that needs to be addressed. Learning how to cut fabric properly is a huge step toward becoming a better sewist. If you know how to find the grain of fabric and how to square up fabric that’s problematic, your sewing projects will improve tenfold.
You can read the tutorial at this link www.ageberry.c...
My tutorial on how to cut fabric straight is at this link www.ageberry.c...
Trapunto tutorial - www.ageberry.c...
You’ll need to grasp the fabric piece by opposite corners and tug on the bias until the edges align. If you're working with a large piece of fabric, you may need a helper. Be sure to grasp the correct corners. They must be catty-corner from each other, and they must realign the threads in the right direction. With each of you tugging gently, you can shift the warp and weft so that the fabric becomes square. Take care not to over-tug, or you may misalign the threads in the other direction. Realign the selvages to check your progress intermittently.
This process will make fabric square enough to cut. This is easier to do in fabric that has been pre-washed but that is not yet completely dry.

Yikes. I’m always on the lookout for new tips and tricks. I’ve been quilting for 20+ years and have never seen a squaring up fabric like yours. It’s not that complicated and I’ve never needed to stretch my fabric to get square cuts. I’ve also done very intricate quilt piecing and never had a problem. But if it works for you, keep it up.

Thank you for your feedback! You have a big experience in quilting and I started to quilt only a few years ago. But I have 20+ experience in making garments and had to deal with squaring up fabric for clothes. So when I bought quilting cotton online it was having this problem and I decided to try this method for quilting fabric. And it worked very well.

Thank you Olga. This explains a lot to me. Do you ever rip your fabric to get on grain rather than cut it?

Yes, I always rip fabric but not all fabrics can be ripped. Only woven, not knits. Woven fabrics with some stretch can't be ripped. But I prefer to rip cotton and some silk fabrics.

I have a question. I am making curtains that are 1 meter in length without hem included in measurement. I need 8 meters. They will send this to me in one piece. How do I square it? Do I cut it down in 1 meter increments or 4 meters at a time? I am alone so I have no one to help me pull on the material when squaring.:( Thank you so much for your help! What accent? All I hear is a different way to speak English. Just go to the US and you will see what I mean, NY speakers are different than Georgian's. And you know what, it is ALL good! :)

Thank you! Kathie, you may not need to square it, wait and see the fabric first. If it's decorator fabric it may be already on-grain. Do you plan to pre-wash it? But if you see it's off-grain then cut it in half - 4 meters is not too much for squaring up. You will need to make the fabric a little dumb though, and not all fabrics can be sprayed with water, so you might need to pre-wash it. And can you ask a neighbor to hold it for you?

@@SewingTutorialsByAgeberry Thank you so much for your advice. I will see what I can do. I was not planning to pre wash, but if that is better then I will.
