Squash and Zucchini Growing Tips (Common Problems to watch Out For!)

When growing squash and zucchini there are a few problems that can arise to watch out for. I highly recommend inspecting your plants on a regular basis, at least once per day, to try to thwart insects like the vine borer and squash bugs. This video is a general overview of what I do when I inspect my quash and zucchini and what I look for.
There are several problems squash can run into when growing: squash vine borers, powdery mildew, and squash bugs are three of the big problems.

What color should my stem on my squash be? My stem is turning dark green. Leaf stems are still bright green. I got 2 big squash in the beginning and now very few blooms.

How large of a plant do you have? The dark green probably is ok. I would recommend picking the squash when small which should encourage it to produce more owners and fruit.

@@Growingthehomegarden thank you. I must have waited too long to pick this last squash. It has so many bumps and it was too hard to slice. Any ideas what is going on? I use fish emulsion as a fertilizer since my squash is in a pot. I use it every other week diluted down to half concentration.

It could be a couple things. Blossom end rot is a calcium deficiency and if you've had a lot of rain (we have) it may prevent the plant from pulling calcium from the soil. In that case you'll need to wait for drier days or maybe try spraying the leaves with a calcium solution for blossom end rot. It's also possible there is more nitrogen in the soil and the plant is focusing on leaves rather than fruit. In that case I would add a fertilizer with a very lot N but a higher P and K. Bonemeal might be a good fertilizer for that. Pick off any rotting fruits as soon as they show signs of rot. I hope that helps a bit!

Dave I'm so disheartened we planted about 8 gray zucchini plants and looks like some are all are infected with the vine bores. I diagnosed and told my husband how to find them he found several all the way up the stem. Do I have to pull the others? I also have younger ones just starting out but my hubby things they have them too because they have that sawdust stuff on root! Is there no squash on my horizon? ???
